Pentax Announces K200D and K20D DSLRs

The sealed controls are nice though, but why the pixel madness?
Pentax feels the public prefers high pixel count to speed and low light performance?
I agree with fisheye freak post, it's only worth it if the sensor gets bigger, then we can have both worlds, speed and pixels.

Amazing! The autofocus switch stopped working and was stuck in MF mode even though the camera was in AF mode. Since I hardly ever use AF, this was a big problem. I do mostly wildlife photography and the noise of the AF is unacceptible.
So, just for the heck of it I thought I'd give it a shot before taking it in.
Very simple problem, the hard part was getting those tiny screws out and not loosing them and back in. The switch has a little metal tab on it that fits in a slot inside the camera. The tab was not lining up correctly. Just a slight bend and it's all better now.
I have MF again and $0 repair bill.
Much better than the last time I tried a do it yourself on a camera.
I had a Minolta 35MM and the film takeup reel broke. I got the part no problem.
But I am convinced to get to the reel to replace it you have to destroy the camera. I never got it back together!

Underwater photography

I'll be going to Hawaii at the end of July.
I'll likely be doing some snorkeling and wondered if anyone here
had some advice about underwater photography.
I have a K100D, and I would imagine you can get a waterproof case
for it, but I'm sure it costs more than the camera.
Are there any more economical alternatives?
Can you rent a case? Maybe there is a cheaper camera that will work?
Last couple times I bought disposables, and the results were mixed,
mostly poor.

K100D - No ISO 100

There is little to be gained by having an ISO 100 setting.
The intrinsic speed of the sensor is the lowest setting, in this case
200. So faster speeds are tricks of the hardware and firmware.
They amplify the sensor output or multiply it.
At ISO 200, there doesn't need to be any amplification or firmware
tricks.
The greater the pixel density the more light is required to get the
same per pixel output. Thus the 100D is naturally a bit faster than the
10D

K1D/K10Ds?

I agree. Technology continues to improve. You have a decide what YOU want, not what the market is offering and pick the closest one.
DSLR's are just cameras. They can't perform miracles. Bells and whistles do not make us better photographers. Understanding the same things it takes to make a good 35mm picture will serve well with a DSLR (and no less) All those crazy features have only very limited use.
Personally, I have a K100 and have not regretted it one bit.
I find the more 'automatic' a camera is, the less likely you'll get what you expected when you take a shot.
Also keep in mind that speed (high ISO) is inversely proportional to pixel count. Get a camera with loads of pixels and you get a lot of noise to go with it, unless you turn the light up.

UV filters: your opinions please!

Are you guys telling me that there is a problem with a cheap filter?
I never thought much about it, and have never paid more than the lowest price I could find. To me, it's just protection and nothing more, so I have never given it much thought about the optics of it, since I really don't care if it blocks UV or not.

You hear these stories about someone discovering a Rembrandt at
a garage sale and getting it for $10 or something.
Of course the seller is ignorant of the value or they wouldn't sell so low.
But isn't there an argument to be made that if you buy something from
someone that hasn't got the knowledge to know the real value, that you
are sort of taking advantage and it's a bit unethical?

Isn't this what you're complaining about? Someone points out to the
world that there is an item not getting good exposure, for whatever reason.
The seller is suddenly being treated more fairly.
Buyers who thought they could sneak away with a $24 Manhattan Island are
suddenly dealing with a bigger auction and they don't get to rip off the Indians!

K100D - "Low-Battery" Problem
Posted By leaton

You could have a bad cell as mentioned previously.
One way to tell is if you have one that gets warm.

Also, I've found that during heavy use, the batteries will get warm
and won't put out as much voltage till they cool down. This is probably normal
and a byproduct of the chemical process, internal resistance effects too.

However, if, as you mentioned before, it was intermittent, it could be as simple as dirty contacts.

An old trick to cleaning contacts is to use a pencil eraser.
Just 'erase' the contacts and the battery ends as well. This is abrasive enough
to get the job done, but not so much as to wear down the metal.

You could do a window capture from acrobat (ctl/alt/PrintScreen)
Open paintbrush and select paste.
Save as jpg from paintbrush.
This will be a tedious process, but it'll give better quality than photographing the manual.
If you do it, I suggest you only save a condensed version or synopsis.

I just wish I could get sharp focus more often.
I really have no interest in photographing people though.
I'm not so much interested in the art of the photograph as much
as the "I was there and captured the moment" type.
Guess you might call it sport photography, not photography of sports, but
the sport of capturing an elusive event

Focus Calibrations for Pentax DSLRs and Lenses

What's the big whoop about auto focus, whether it is perfect or not.
Everything that is engineered has it's compromises and limitations.
But the whole concept seems silly to me.
If you don't like the camera's focus choice, just turn it yourself, it's
so simple.
So you are sitting right next to your TV and you complain because the
remote control won't work. Just set the remote control down and
push the buttons on the stinkin TV!

New K100D + flash icon problem

I've seen something that may be the same thing - on my K100D.
I think that the light sensor only works within a certain range.
When it gets below a certain light level, rather than giving up,
it comes up with wildly incorrect exposure settings. I've seen this
a couple times. When it happened, it was so obvious, I could
recognize it as wrong just from my own eyeballs - poor light sensors.

Pardon my ignorance, but I was under the impression that any TC had to be THE TC for the lens. Somewhere I'd read that if you have
a given make and model of lens, for some reason, there was only the TC that was made specifically for it, if any. If you used, for instance, another make TC, you'd get unacceptible performance.

Is this true?

Can't use a mirror

I have a Takumar 500mm mirror lens from long ago.
It has a T mount and I ordered it with a Minolta MD mount.
When I got my K100D - I found a T mount adapter to fit it for
the Pentax on ebay for a few bucks and changed it.
The lense fits fine on my camera and although it is fat, it clears the
front.
I think the part that sticks out on the camera may be a styling thing
and not really any important reason other than that.
I remember long ago that some SLRs had, rather than an electronic
display for aperture, a little lens on the camera body that overhung
the lens mount at the top. This reflected back into the viewfinder
such that you could optically view the aperture setting thru the view
finder while adjusting the camera. A low tech foolproof feature!
When I saw the K100D - thought occurred to me that it was a
styling thing that was to make the camera look retro.

Sad - The Dell discount deal

Dell is a top notch outfit when it comes to quality of their products in my
opinion. However, their customer service is so bad that I'd never buy from
them again if I could get the quality elsewhere.
I bought a computer from them a couple years ago and they double charged me out of my checking account for it. There wasn't enough money in there to
pay for it twice, so the 2nd charge bounced, then they turned me over to a
collection agency and wouldn't ship the computer I'd paid for one and a half
times!
Took a month to straighten it out.
Then I was reading an article about Dells problems and they included a
case where they had done the exact same thing to a preacher somewhere
in New England!

Keep in mind though - if you're saving 10% on the camera by waiting, that's
a pretty good return on your money if you only have to wait a month or two,
in the 100% per annum range. I'd wait.

It is disgusting to see what they charge for an adapter.
They come up with a proprietary plug and that's what you're paying for,
since even the fanciest adapter with a readily available plug would be
available for $20 or less.
Reminds me of the game with printers. Sell it cheap, make it up on overpriced
ink cartridges.
Except in this case the camera was not cheap.

K10 vs K100
K10 more noise - K100 less noise. (Maybe the only thing the K100 does better,
besides cost- but to me the overwhelmingly most important)

can the digital display on the k10 and k100 be adjusted?

I found adjusting the brightness of the lcd makes a huge difference in how
the shot APPEARS to be exposed. In low light it can appear over exposed and
in direct sunlight, it may appear to be underexposed.
It's more reliable to check exposure using the histogram. This is something
very handy in the K100. If you're not familiar with it, the following is
an excellent explanation

k100d mode dial problem

This is such an issue?

Again - I agree, all those contacts and sooner or later you'll have oxidation,
unless it has gold plating - and most of us would not want to pay the difference
in price that would add to the product.

When you have a switch that ain't switchin', rapidly turn it round and round,
and that should solve the problem. Contact cleaner is better, but in some cases
it may be too hard to get access to the switch guts to bother with.

Why can't Pentax
Posted By leaton
Replies: 9

I remember a few things from a loooong time ago when I had college physics.
When light goes from air to glass, there is a speed change.
This speed change causes a vector change.
When you have a vector change you get reflection and refraction.
So seems that introduction of an extra lens, even if it's passive,
will introduce anomalies and transmission loss.
This can be reduced with fancy coatings. Coatings ease the transition by reducing the speed change in steps. But never the less,
there is a negative effect.
The question is, how much loss and anomalies is it worth to
protect the sensor? Would you introduce secondary effects from the reflections bouncing around inside the main lens?
Could you actually make something like this that works similarly
on every lens, or would it depend on the lens?

I have no idea - just throwing this out as a point of discussion.
This optical stuff is never as simple as it would seem.
