I know what you mean about leaving the 300 behind, I get the same feeling myself when I leave my 55-300 behind on European trips but I don't miss it when I'm there. I also bring a smaller charger to help with weight and space. So, I'd say yes, you're making all the right calls. I hope you'll come back and post some photos.

Thanks for the comments. The flower photos you mentioned were taken with a Sigma 28mm f1.8, it's a nice lens but big so I don't take it out very often. I do like that I can get those closeups with it though and it's the fastest lens I have. I agree I should clone out that shadow on the bird on beach photo.

I haven't used ON1 enough to have much of an opinion yet, my first thoughts are that I don't like it as much as DXO PhotoLab but it might grow on me (I'm trying to move away from Lightroom). I think I might be drawn to the presets with ON1, which is either good or bad.

That is hilarious about the 3200 ISO - I can totally see that happening. Lucky for you! I feel lucky too with my bargain purchase. So far, so good! Thanks for commenting.

First, have a great trip! I agree that that is a lot of gear for a trip to Europe. If you're traveling by train, and in general, you'll be doing a lot of walking in crowds. It can sometimes be awkward to change lenses.

I find that I rarely use a long lens when I'm in cities and that's where you'll be spending the bulk of your time. So... DA 100 because you like it so much, 16-85 which will probably stay on your camera most if the time, and whatever is light and fast for night shots and inside churches.

It's good you're getting more SD cards. I would load up, like more than 2 more. You could always buy one there but who wants to spend time looking for one and possibly pay a lot more? But then, I use my SD cards as a backup and don't take a tablet or computer so I make sure I have more than I need. 4 batteries is more than enough but I'd bring them all and a plug adapter. I personally wouldn't bother with a flash but that's me.

I like using a lens pen and always have one with me when I'm out shooting. You will get some fantastic shots - even with one lens you would get some fantastic shots, it's Europe!

I recently purchased a used K-3 II from roberts camera on eBay to upgrade from my well-loved K-5. I was hoping the camera would be OK - I don't trust eBay as the best place to buy anything. But, with the low cost, I thought I'd give it a try - you can return the camera if you're not happy with the purchase.

When I got it, it looked brand new, in box with everything in it AND when I did a test shot to use the SD card to check the shutter count it was 2. I was surprised by that. I took it out this weekend for the first time - pretty much blind (meaning I didn't read the user manual much at all). I wanted to just play with it to see what it could do and basically make a lot of mistakes. :-) I had some issues with focusing so will have to learn how to deal with that and I felt a bit like the noise was worse than my K-5 but I know that's not supposed to be the case so it must be user error.

I'm sharing some of the photos I took in Pinnacles National Park and San Simeon, California. I'm also trying out ON1 for the first time so some of these are presets from ON1.

Pentax K-3 II mint from robertscamera on Ebay for 557 with coupon

I also just bought a K-3 II from robertscamera on eBay without the coupon but for $577. I figured I would return it if I wasn't happy with it. The box was not in great shape but I was surprised to get everything else in the box. Camera looks brand new and has paperwork for North America. There were some marks and dots when I checked the sensor but it cleaned up easily with a blower. And when I took a jpg to check the shutter count it was 2. Did not expect that. I haven't been able to play with the camera much yet but I think I might have got lucky. I'm upgrading from a well loved K-5.

Music to my ears! Thanks! I have an trip to Borneo and Sumatra coming up and am looking forward to taking photos of orangutans; and then, maybe, next year, Africa again. So I'll be ready! My K-3II is on the FedEx truck on the way to my house as I write this. Exciting!

Move Up from a K-5?

Original poster here. I decided to get a used K-3ii -- it's on its way to me now. After a bit more thought, I decided it makes sense to get this camera now at a lower cost because in a few years, I'll probably be moving to a mirrorless camera system and that will take a large outlay of cash -- why buy a new camera at a premium price only to sell it again in a few years? I'm sure I'll like the K-3ii - after all, I've been happy with my K-5 for 7 years. I'm definitely not an "early adopter."

But having said that, I'm sure I would have gone with the latest version if it were available. Pentax is assuming their consumers have a lot of patience to discontinue the K-3ii without its replacement.

I could have gotten a used K-3 for a good amount less, but I like some of the features added for the 3ii and I just about never use a flash so I won't miss it.

Wish me luck! I'm looking forward to giving my new-to-me camera a good workout to see what it can do.

What is you on your Travel Bucket List?

Just discovered this thread. I'll give it some new life and see if more people respond.

Off the top of my head:
1) Namibia
2) Zambia
3) Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Borneo) - going there this year mostly to see and photograph orangutans
4) Dempster Highway in the Yukon
5) Norway (Scandinavia in general)
6) Antarctica
7) Alaska to see Polar Bears
8) Galapagos
9) Morrocco
10) Madagascar

Places I've been that I REALLY wanted to go to and would be on a lot of bucket lists:
1) Peru including Andes and Amazon
2) Trans-Siberian Rail from Moscow to Beijing with stops in Russia, Mongolia and China, including the Great Wall
3) Pyramids in Egypt
4) African safari in Tanzania for the "Big 5" and Uganda for gorillas and chimps in the wild
