Coronavirus

I'm in NY State and we have been under "stay at home" rules for a couple of weeks now. We can go grocery shopping. some of us are still working if you are "essential". Since people are getting sick, I don't see much complaining about social distancing rules and the limiting of gatherings. I'm in an upstate area and we have relatively few cases. We would like it to stay that way. What has become an issue here is people from NYC and North Jersey coming north to camps and vacation homes and potentially bringing the virus with them.

Locally, our curve is pretty much flattened. Social distancing has worked but not for long if there aren't some sort of travel restrictions. I know this brings up constitutional issues. But if the summer people start showing up, it creates a huge problem. The summer businesses that cater to them aren't open. Our hospitals are small. A couple of dozen sick tourists will fill up available beds and leave no place for locals to go if we begin getting sick. Short of some rather unpleasant and unconstitutional measures, the risk for everyone becomes much higher.

House Panel - Coronavirus Could Destroy US Postal Service

I've seen the media making a big deal about USPS workers and Amazon warehouse workers getting sick. I would think this should be expected as these people are out and working every day. If some services are considered essential, then those workers stand a very high risk of catching this. I was furloughed earlier this week only to get called back today. It seems having working refrigeration on food delivery trucks is essential again. I'm kind of undecided if I will go back.

On the bright side during the pandemic..

My part time job is considered essential so my schedule hasn't changed much. What has changed is that I'm pretty much homebound on my off days. I spent one morning replacing the brakes on one car. The weather went downhill so the rears will have to wait. We finished the annual chore of getting our taxes filed. I have a ton of yard work to do once the weather cooperates and the snow is gone. Yes, we are still snow covered with more coming tomorrow.

Will the Postal Service, UPS, Fed Ex stop delivering?

I don't think there will be problems with delivery unless there is so much sickness that there aren't enough drivers to work and selectors to pick orders. The point of all the closures is to prevent that. Lets pray that doesn't happen. Amazon is hiring and as busy as the Christmas season but I just read they had to shut down a warehouse due to workers testing positive and getting sick. I have a friend who works at the Postal Service and there are no plans to cut back at this time.

Reusuable tote bags...concerns

How clean is the trunk of your car or the hatch area of your SUV? Your backseat or floor of your vehicle? How about the shopping cart? How many toddlers with dirty diapers have been in it? I can carry this as far as my imagination will go. If you're worried about your reusable bag, wash it or spend the nickel for a paper bag.

Everything we buy is packaged. Your food never touches the bag. The stuff that isn't, like produce, needs to be washed before you eat it. If you have ever seen the inside of a food delivery truck, you would laugh at discussions about reusable bags.

With all the craziness going on and events being cancelled, I'm hoping to take advantage of the time to get things done. If the weather cooperates and it warms up a bit more, I'd like to finally start repairing my bad sections of siding and paint my house. Trout season opens in two weeks, also. I'm looking forward to some quality lake and stream time.

Who is scheduled to travel during the pandemic? (just another COCID-19 talk)

We had no vacation travel plans this year other than some weekend getaways. My wife was caring for her mother who was old and in poor health for much of the past year. She passed away a month ago so we are now free to go on vacations again but we have made no plans.

Right now we are in "wait and see" mode. Events are being cancelled everywhere. Any travel will be driving because I don't want to be stranded anywhere. We have talked about going to the Outer Banks, NC this summer. It's been a while and I could use some ocean time. I can't complain much as we live in the Adirondacks and thousands come here to vacation. The mountains, rivers, and lakes are my back yard.

This whole thing is a little bit crazy but there isn't much to do but sit back and watch. I suppose I now have a very good excuse to just hibernate for mud season and come back out when (real) spring arrives.

Record companies are Dooomed

I really don't care much about the record companies. I suspect they will survive. Whether the artists and songwriters will do better in the age of streaming is a big question. Some have been very vocal about how they don't like streaming. I still buy an occasional CD but as Chris, they are from independent artists and I usually buy them at one of their shows if I like their music.

Interesting Trivia

An interesting bit of trivia on the tux. Mark's post on color made me smile about a wedding I shot a few years ago. While the traditional tuxedo is black, this groom and his best man, wishing to portray true Adirondack Redneck style, managed to find tuxedos in Mossy Oak camo. I wonder if Emily Post would approve.

D FA 28-105 WR in the extreme cold?

I have a lot of DA screw drive lenses and I have used them often in below 0F temperatures. My Sigma HSM lenses with the motors get very slow and don't always focus in extreme cold. I can't comment on the lenses you mention because I don't have them but I did have an F35-70 that was fine in the cold. Again, screw drive. My Sigma screw drive lenses work well in the cold also. I have them outside for hours when I'm shooting motorcycle ice racing.

I have a K300/4 with the same problem. I have a Manfroto 293 telephoto lens support. Yeah, it's a little ugly but it gets the job done and being adjustable, it can be used with all sorts of lenses which have a broken, missing or no tripod foot. You can buy them at B&H for $70. Or, open up your tool box and adapt or make something.

Iso .. how high is too high for you?

When I first switched to digital and purchased a K10D, I generally stayed at ISO 400 or under and would occasionally shoot at 800. The max of ISO 1600 wasn't really usable unless I wanted a grainy B&W look. The higher ISO capability of the K5 was what led me to upgrade. I now feel comfortable shooting at ISO 1600 for anything and have had usable shots at up to ISO 12800 although I hold to the rule that the lowest ISO needed is what you should use.

Best Cloud storage

My upload speeds are way too slow to even consider storing full size photos in the cloud. I use multiple external hard drives for backups. I do have some older edited resized photos stored on Google photos but I haven't added any photos in a long time. I started out with Picassa which closed up and my photos were moved to Google Plus which they closed up. I don't want my backups at the mercy of some company's business model which can change from quarter to quarter.

Confession Time [if you are willing] what are you obsessed with- ignoring photography

I suppose some say swimming has become an obsession. Around 3 years ago, arthritis was beginning to rule my life. My orthopedic doctor suggest I get in the pool as a good low impact workout/therapy. I had competed in my youth over 50 years ago so "learning how" wasn't an issue. So what started as a few workouts became a regular routine. I am now swimming approx. 3K yards in an hour long workout every other day and I began competing in US Masters a year ago. I still ski, ride my motorcycles, and other things but right now, it's my regular swimming that I credit that is enabling me to continue to do the things I love at my age.

What your favorite coffee brand and coffee machine

I do drink decaf on occasion, especially in the winter months when I want a warm drink. I can't take a lot of caffeine but I love my coffee. I'm not a big Starbucks fan but they do make a very good decaf. I drink all my coffee with some cream and sugar as it cuts the acid a little. Surprisingly, I'm more likely to get reflux from decaf.

What your favorite coffee brand and coffee machine

I'm using a Keurig. I know, ti's the lazy mans coffee maker and a bit expensive but since I'm the only coffee drinker in the house, the cost isn't much. My daily brew is the Donut Shop K cup. I like the flavor and it doesn't give me reflux as some coffee can.

On days when I have a lot to do and on little sleep, I break out my French Press and brew up some Death Wish, a locally made brand which claims to be the worlds strongest coffee. It doesn't taste strong but very smooth. It would be my daily cup but it tends to wind me up a little too much.

Anyone watching the World Series?

I haven't watched any. I've been busy and I don't really follow either team. That said, congratulations to the Nationals. I'm happy to see them win it all. After many years of struggles going back to the days of the Montreal Expos, It's great to see them as series champions and they really showed a lot of heart in winning it on the road.

I'm sure someone who knows baseball stats will chime in. Has there ever been a World Series before where neither team won a home game?

Sigma stops K-Mount support

They may not like them but customers always look at a thriving aftermarket of accessories as a plus in deciding on buying into a camera system. It does benefit the camera manufacturer to some degree even if a user on a tight budget buys a camera body and a Tamron or Sigma lens. In the end, I think forcing the aftermarket away from a camera will hurt them. At the time I bought my Sigma 150-500 Pentax had nothing to offer. When Pentax finally rolled out the 150-450, it's price as almost 3 times what I paid for my Sigma. In all honesty, if I was shopping for a long zoom today, I would just buy a used Nikon D300 and a Sigma and happily shoot my motorcycle racing for half the price of a lens

I have a Sigma 17-70 and 150-500. The are both excellent lenses and I'm sad that Sigma is going to discontinue making lenses in K mount. It's never a good thing for a camera company when third party support goes away.

Unfortunately, businesses going downhill after management changes are very common. New people come in with no relationship to any employees. I was in that situation several years ago when a management change came to the company I had worked for for over 10 years. We did contract maintenance for a truck fleet. I was literally days away from leaving when the customer announced they were moving all fleet maintenance in house. They were just as unhappy with the regime change and were concerned that the garage staff would leave so they accelerated their plans a year early. Ultimately, my previous employer lost every customer and has ceased operations in NY state altogether.

It's extremely stressful when your customer is happy with your work but your manager tells you that you don't work for them, you work for me. In my case, I was hired by the customer and even given seniority for the years I had worked as contractor so I lost no benefits such as vacations. I wish you well and hope you find a good and well paying job.
