Pentax MX Failure

I'm pretty good when it comes to DIY stuff. I've serviced some of my lenses etc. but I would never attempt to repair the MX on my own. Unless it's what stevebrot have said - that you consider it a junk camera. I know because I've opened few cameras before and it was always stresful. Your local camera repair shop should be able to fix that mirror issue.

The Shadow of the K1000

I don't think there is anything like K1000 shadow. Maybe people say that on the internet, because DPReview suggested Pentax should make a digital K1000. People don't buy Pentax not because of some ancient analogue camera that hasn't been in production since 20 years. They don't buy Pentax because of bad autofocus performance and absence of any viable video options. And the reason behind the success of new Fujis is not their retro looks. It is great AF performance, great video and a lot of different features. Even if genreal public don't shoot in 4K, they will want that option in their camera. Would the digital K1000 sell? It would if it could hold the candle to others. O, and there is one other thing from my experience with Pentax brand. Every conversation I had in my life about Pentax cameras (not on the internet) went exactly the same way: "Pentax? Oh they it used to be a great brand". These words were always spoken in the same way, just as the Pentax brand would not exist anymore. And that's what poor marketing does to you.

Wide angle lens(used) for 300$

Hi!

Have you considered manual focus lens? You could get old SMC 24mm f2.8 for less than 200$ and save money for tripod or something. From the lenses you listed above I would get the 21mm Limited.

Panasonic LX100 much better than Pentax Q

Ohh c'mon people!
Guy just likes his LX100 more than Q. In my opinion that sample photo he uploaded is so damn highly edited that it can't be considered as a true example of sensor capabilities.
Everyone has its own taste, and I just don't like highly edited photos. So on that basis I wont say LX100 is better than Q.

But on logic basis I will say that LX100 is better than Q, because of a bigger sensor. m4/3 do better at 800 iso than Q. As APS-C do better at 800 iso than m4/3. Simple is that.

Still, nowhere near to say Q is useless, stupid, joke or anything like that. Super little camera!

It's not bigger than 5D Mark III and 6D. The only dimension in which K-1 surpasses these Canons is thickness.

"Pentax K-1 is 10% (15.5 mm) narrower and 5% (6.4 mm) shorter than Canon EOS 5D Mark III.
Pentax K-1 is 12% (9.1 mm) thicker than Canon EOS 5D Mark III.
Pentax K-1 [1010 g] weights 6% (60 grams) more than Canon EOS 5D Mark III [950 g] (*inc. batteries and memory card).

Pentax K-1 dimensions: 136.5x110x85.5 mm (camera body only, excluding protrusion)
Canon EOS 5D Mark III dimensions: 152x116.4x76.4 mm (camera body only, excluding protrusion)"

It's heavier than Canons because it's made out of better materials. As all Pentax high end cameras.

And if compare K-1 to APS-C Canon 7D Mark II K-1 comes smaller again.

Guys at Pentax know how to make gear that is compact and feels solid at the same time.

Once I removed one element from my broken Prinzflex 70-210mm zoom lens and it became a macro. Albeit a very limited use macro as it has incredibly short focusing disctance.

Failure in my copy meant it produced soft focused pictures until stepped down to f16-22, and when I made it macro I still had to step it down to let's say f8 for any sharpness.

This is a 1/20th sec. chronograph dial in my watch made with my Prinzflex Macro Mode Turbo GTI

Should I go Pentax, Russian or German?

Thanks for all these answers :) Since size and weight are not a problem for me I don't take them as disadvantages. Especially As the lens is going to be used mostly on a tripod. And the good thing about Tair and Zeiss is that they have a tripod mount.

Anyway thank you all for helping me :) I consider the thread closed :)

Hello fellow Pentaxians. I just sold my SMC Pentax-F 100-300 4,5-5,6. I wasn't pleased with its sharpness, as you can read in my review of it in the pentax lens review section.

So now I need your help.

I was looking at Tair 3 300mm f4,5 lens, Meyer Orestegor/Pentacon 300mm f4 lens, or SMC Pentax-M 200mm f4 with 2x teleconverter.

As you can see all of these lenses are MF, old, metal and cheap.

I rarely ask this type of question but which one should I buy? Or is there a 4th option?

Thanks for help :)

Focusing screen for SFXn

Hi

Does anyone know which cameras have the same size focusing screen as the SFXn (SF1n)? I need to replace the focusing screen but I reckon it's cheaper and easier to buy other SLR body and just change the focusing screens.

Greetings
Simon

FA Series lenses - the most useful Pentax lenses of all?
Posted By sfkazimierczak
Replies: 32

FA are the best option as far as compatibility is concerned. If I were to choose between aperture ring and quiet AF, I would take quiet AF.
On the other hand I didn't hear many stories about FA lens that had broken screw drive AF and Pentax Forums are full of stories about broken SDM motors.

Exactly. If I were going to theatre I would prefer quiet DC motor DA or D-FA lens, but if reliabilty were my biggest concern I would take FA*, though that's pure dreaming, because I cannot afford one :D

But I agree with what the pathdoc had said. If you work on film and digital FA lenses are the best option.

Can I clean inside my Rikenon 1:2 50mm ??

It depends on how the lens is build. For example F35-80 f4-5.6 doesn't have to be calibrated because it's build like LEGO. After servicing my M 50 f2 I had to adjust the focus. Usually focusing is done by moving front element front-back. If that black spot or whatever is somewhere on the back - near the mount - than probably you can clean it without adjusting focus.

I think you don't need to check it on a white background, because normally you don't take pictures of white background. Try to see whether this specks affect your everyday fotos. Cleaning old 50mm lens should be relatively easy. You just need to be patient. Adjusting foucus is very time consuming.

The biggest Pentax flop.

What do you think? What is the biggest Pentax flop in their history? I'm young and I don't know much about problems with cameras in the older days, but what do you think? What changed the way people think about Pentax? What made their reputation worse? :hmm:

My bet is unreliable MZ/ZX series with "stuck mirror" problem, which had a bad influence on the reputation of Pentax as an maker of reliable equipment.

Returning to Pentax (used to have a K100D)

There can be only one conclusion from the previous replies: Buy whatever Pentax.

I would suggest K-S2. It has acceptable video capabilties, better than K-5ii, K-50 and K-30. And if you don't have other things to occasionally capture video than the dslr than its good to have dslr that can capture video without much problem. If you want to make photos only, than I would rather spent money on 2nd hand K-5ii or K-50 and bunch of lenses.

Pentax FF spring 2016

Well... For me that teaser is a very good sign.

I am not even close to thinking about buying the full frame when it hits the market, but hey! Let's imagine Pentax releases a faulty FF Body this atumn. See what hapens? Pentax will lost the rest of its reputation, sells of everything including sport optics will drop dramatically and we will all have to buy camera from a different brand in the future. Typical NSU Ro80 type of story.

FF body is so anticipated that they can't afford to release it until it's build like tank.

You know what does it look when Ferrari launches their all new supercar? They make a special website for it. And Ricoh decided to do the same thing. I think it might be a good sign. I think that launch of the FF will mark the moment in which Pentax will have their own website. Why did they bother to create all new pentax.com address when they could simply add the FF news in the news section on Ricoh page?

I think that catching up will never happen. Even when Pentax AF performance improves, Canon and Nikon will still be better. I think that Pentax is happy to be a niche product. I believe that Pentax has super engineers that could produce super fast HD FA 50mm f1.2 but it will never happen. They are in pursuit of compactness and image quality, not AF speed and fast apertures.

Read more at: 2015 Pentax Interview Transcript - CP+ 2015 | PentaxForums.com

I think Ricoh made their priorities quite clear in this interview. FANS ARE THE FIRST USERS. (NOT PROS)

EDIT: I will like to point out that Pentax will always be in my heart. I'm not considering other systems than Pentax. Not for photography.

Pentax K-2 ? FF?

Rubbish. It's going to be super ultra cool camera, so it has to be named Pentax F1 TURBO. Later (summer of 2016) Pentax will announce cheaper version called Pentax F1 GTi, which will become a legend because of its value and performance. GTi will be availible as limited edition with racing stripes in 467 colour variations. As eco fashion goes, in 2017 Pentax will produce Pentax Astron F1000 SUPER G. That will be the first solar powered FF DSLR with built in GPS.

PS: that's true.
