K-1 Manual

It seems like Pentaxians are starting to get polarized between the Stills camp and the Video camp.

I use both, have used various different cameras, and still continue to support Pentax because it has the, how shall we say, potential, no, actual capability of providing excellent results in both sectors, despite Ricoh saying they are not pushing for the best video featured camera. That is why you hear Pentaxian video enthusiasts comment on this subject, because they know the K-1 has, with a few upgrades, what it takes to be that perfect Hybrid DSLR. Mentioning in the manual that using an external microphone will facilitate shooting video without picking up camera noises is pretty much setting up a firmware update to enable mechanical SR in movie mode. There might however be a cost consideration in developing the software tweak to do this at the K-1s competetive (US) pricepoint.

So let me make a suggestion here. For those of us who really care about these particular pro video features, perhaps Ricoh could introduce them in a paid firmware update option. That way we get what we would need, and the fee would offset the development cost of enabling them, leaving normal bug fix updates to remain free for the stills users.

Please don't quarrel guys, you like stills, we like video too, we all love Pentax. And don't disrespect the engineers who have worked so hard to make this one of the finest cameras on the market today.

- How do I switch the camera on?
- What button do I press to start recording a movie?
- When will the firmware update enabling 5-axis sensor stabilisation in Movie Mode, 50/60 fps in 1080p, clean HDMi out, C-Log profile and 4:2:2 color space be available?
- Is there a God?

The K-1 is the only FF DSLR with 5-axis image stabilisation, so it would make the ideal camera for hybrid photo & video professionals. Why then hasn't mechanical SR in movie mode been enabled, like it was in the K-5, and like it is in the Sony A7sII and the Olympus OM-D EM-1 and 5? Will it still be possible for you to unlock this feature upon launch time?

Shots of screen and dials on the new FF Pentax

Don't think anyone has eluded to this yet, but my theory for the unmarked right dial is that it might very well be similar to the Silent Multi-Controller on the Sony a99:

I tried out the a99 last year and this was the feature I loved most about it. Basically it allows you to quietly adjust iso, shutter speed, aperture or mic rec level during filming in movie mode (and it can also be used for other functions in photo mode). The only problem I had with it was its placement, you had to fidget it with your left index finger while filming. THIS on the pentax FF, if it does have the same function in combination with the selector dial, would be absolutely perfect positioning for filmmaking. As I don't see a dedicated start/stop button for movie record, I assume the top button on this dial might work as such, or otherwise the green button next t the screen may have that function. And indeed, a touchscreen makes perfect sense.

All in all it looks extremely promising for a hybrid photo-film camera, as long as there is a mic and headphone jack.

Basically a D750 with SR is the aim.

By the way, I'm a wedding cinematographer and have been using Pentax cameras since 2011, so I'd be very happy to beta test the movie functions of the new FF for you, Pentax :-)

Mechanical Sensor Stabilisation During Video - I Want It Back...

Ever since Pentax disabled mechanical SR in Movie mode I have been waiting for any company to bring out 5-axis IBIS on a sensor larger than that of the Olympus OM-D E5 and EM-1. I would have gone with Oly but their very limited frame rate, codec and low-light capabilities deterred me. It's just not usable in a professional setting.

Now Sony brought the A7 II to market and on paper it was THE answer, but seeing Andrew Reid's first hands on test obviously shows their IBIS is not up to par with either the EM-1 or the K-5.

For that reason I STILL shoot with the K-5 for handheld work, and in the right light and with the right handling it still produces top quality footage.
SO unless SONY address the shortcomings on the A7 II IBIS, or release an A7s II with a properly functions stabilisation, I might actually pick up a K5 II for the time being. Pentax had something very good with it, and should they venture into FF, they really should bring it back, even on a K-3 II.

The points you made are very valid. I started out with a K10D as an amateur, started getting jobs, started collecting glass, and have become a full-time photog. For some high profile jobs (including video) I rented the 5D mkII, and was almost about to switch systems. The economic crisis and the fact that I already owned sone sweet Pentax lenses made me stick with them, and I recently aqcuired the K-5. However, this is only to tide me over until the 5D mkIII is announced. However, should Pentax Ricoh be able to assure us that they are actually working on a FF body, I will hold out. Ball's in your court.

I second the "travel" suggestion since it is that time of year, and perhaps rename it to the more evocative JOURNEY.

Supersonic vs Body AF?

Hi!
I just bought my 50-135 2.8 DA* lens, and since I've read that us K10D users have two choices with this lens, either the supersonic AF or Body AF, I was wondering how do I know which is which, and when do I know the supersonic is working?

Thanks,
Marq

2.8 zoom lens plunge, which one?

HAHA, yeah, that's always a good one. I'm actually still working on obtaining that Photo Pass, but I have a pretty good feeling it's gonna come through, and then I don't want to be left without a good lens for the occasion. I do quite a lot of concert photography for a local jazz website, but my K10D is new since January, so I'd use the zoom in other gigs anyway.

So I'm hearing you all, Sigma is probably my only choice at the moment as far as availability goes, but most have sharp experiences with it. Thanks also for the tip about the 50mm 1.4 prime.

thanks Chuck for your observations.
I hadn't considered the handheld/135 issue.
The Sigma is available for the K10D, or so they say here in Greece,
hadn't asked about the Tamron yet. Tamron seems to get good reviews in other zooms. I don't mind the cost that much, I just want good glass and a bit of play between distances in one zoom.

Does anyone else here have experience with up to 200mm concert photography?

Hi guys, I need your advice.
Since I'll be going to a concert of The Police in Paris,
I'm taking the plunge with a good zoom lens.
Which one would you suggest?

Tamron SP AF70-200mm F2.8
or
Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8

thanks!
