K-1 Crop mode vs KP

This is why I don't use crop mode. I find it to be a lot of extra work to keep my subject in frame using crop mode. It doesn't do much good if I can get twice the number of frames when in many of them the subject is not where it should be. I find it much better to not rely on spray and pray and crop in post instead.

For me I only half wish for a higher frame rate on my k-1. I do miss the cool sound a fast firing shutter makes, especially when I am standing next to somebody who can hear it. I don't miss all the extra frames I have to go through in post.

Advice asked on buying Sigma 70-300 DG APO Macro lens or using my SMC DA-L 55-300

Below is a screen capture of the Sigma 70-300 APO and Pentax HD DA 55-300 wide open and for good measure the Sigma 100-300 f/4 at f/5.6 and f/4 all at 300mm.

I also included a screen capture showing the vignetting of the Pentax at 300mm and 100mm wide open.

If you didn't already have the pentax and you like flowers or small things, the sigma's "macro" capability might tilt favor its way.

Based on most of the reviews I have seen of the sigma 70-300, it is better than I thought it would be but depending on your use probably not better than the pentax 55-300 since at the center the pentax is definitely sharper with better contrast plus it is weather resistant.

Pentax DA* 300mm f4 or Sigma 100-300mm EX DG f4

I have the sigma, had the old pentax pre-plm version. The pentax is weather resistant, smaller/lighter, focuses faster and silently. I don't think the pentax will work very well with a TC especially at the long end. The sigma works great.

This not true. Yes CO12 will work with k1m2 dng files, but it does not treat them like raw files so you do not get the full capability of the program. For instance some of the white balance adjustment controls are missing. I asked phase one what else doesn't work and they said just about everything. Below is the response I got from phase one:

Hi,

Per the release notes (available here: https://www.captureone.com/en/features/release-notes), the camera isn’t supported yet in Capture One. Essentially, none of the features will work. There may be some workarounds via DNG, but it's not ideal. We don't discuss future product development. You aren’t the first to inquire, however, and I’ve added your case to the note for R&D to consider future implementation.

Best regards,

Phase One Technical Support

I bow to your superior knowledge of the inner workings of C1, even more than C1 support. I am not taking issue with a few missing white balance canned settings. Those settings led me to contact C1 support. If I decide to go back to C1 if/when my camera is officially supported, I will pass any support emails I receive by you for verification before I make any further bone-headed knee-jerk decisions. Really my main issue is why should I pay for a program that does not officially support my k1m2 when there are a few other alternatives that do support it? I apologize for spreading false info from C1 support on this issue.

Yes indeed. sometimes I attach my loupe and use it when using my lensbaby lens. But most of the time I prefer using focus confirmation with the magnified eye piece instead. Can I get the same effect using software? Maybe. But it is definitely more fun to do it for reals.

K1 Continuous Shooting Color Shifts

Often the color balance of the light changes with the AC phase in conditions like this. Adding natural light to the mix makes things more difficult. One fix is to shoot at less than 1/60 second which will average things out over one AC cycle.

Thanks. Since my post I have been executing a shell script before importing files in to Capture One which looks like:

exiftool -P -overwrite_original -lens\
You would think if exiftool can convert the lens id and lens type tags, Capture One could create lens model from one of them -- especially since a paying customer filed a bug report.

Strap Me Better...

Seems like the Peak Design Slide would work perfectly. When I shorten up my strap the camera sits at the bottom of my sternum. The camera sits at an angle that seems to be perfect for changing lenses. When I bring the camera up to shoot in LV the LCD is 3 inches from my nose and the strap is not in the way in portrait or landscape mode.

With an iPad Pro and iPencil you get both a crayon like system and a camera system. Plus you can use the camera system to take a shot and immediately use the crayon like system to make improvements. Will the WaxMax tripod adapter also have an iPad case with arca-swiss quick release compatible plate?

Precautions for using heavy lenses?
Posted By 77me
Replies: 25

So far I like it very much. It is heavy but I find it manageable. Sometimes when I take it out of the bag, I wish for the size and weight of my k-3, 50-135 combo, but once I start shooting I find the swapped location of the zoom and focus rings a bigger distraction than the weight. I do wonder why it is ~300g heavier than other similar lenses. Once the newness of the k1, 70-200 wears off I can't say that I won't opt for the k3, 50-135 for some occasions.

Any hope for a decent 16-35mm FA lens that can take filter threads?

My solution to your two issues are:

Put the DFA 70-200 on the K1 then the 15-30 doesn't seem so big.

Add the FotodioX WonderPana 145 system to the 15-30. It makes the lens even bigger but still handles ok.

Downsize to me means not bringing along my tripod. The one constant on my hawaii trips was my 16-50 and polarizer.
