How did you become a Pentaxian ?

My first Pentax was an ME Super, Super by name and nature. It was coupled with a 50mm F1.4 M lens. I thought I was "It and a bit" and sneered at the peasants who had a mere F1.7 lens. Turns out the F1.7 was a darn good lens in its own right so maybe I should have kept those sneers to myself! BUT, the problem was that I purchased the camera duty free due to my parents going overseas. In those days, this meant the camera had to go overseas with them and accordingly, I had to await their return before I could use it! Oh, the pain, oh, the anticipation. It was a great camera and I still have it although the winder has stopped working now. And the F1.4 lens? A sad day because the next Pentax was and MZ-50 and I soon discovered it the F1.4 would not work because it did not have the magic "A". So I swapped the F1.4 M lens for a F2 lens with an "A". Not my best move, to be sure.

So the follow on question to that is, where do I get a split image finder for my K1? I do recall that for my old ME Super the split image focussing was always deadly accurate

Thank you all for your excellent and well considered suggestions. I will make a note of each and gradually work my way through them. In the meantime I have found 2 things do work reasonably well. Firstly, forgetting about F1.4 and thinking of the lens as an F2.8 lens. At this point focus is much more reliable and photos are much sharper. Bokeh is also quite good too. The other thing that helps is having the focus beep turned on. Annoying? Yes, most definitely.

Cheap camera/expensive lens??

All very good advice, and very pleased to see Maths being used! To change the topic a little, what if the OP was not confined to the basketball court and it was a general question? That is, what is the better combination for quality photos in general? The kX plus the 150-450, or a K70 plus 55-300 plm?

Problem focussing Samyang 85mm F1.4

It could be my eyes, but I swear that I am focussing correctly with my Samyang 85mm. However, I am continually finding that the subject I am focussing on is not in focus. I do find that when I use live view and focus peaking that I can get my subject in focus. This lens is manual focus but I am wondering if there is any way of calibrating this lens so that it will focus? I had tried calibrating an auto focus lens and applying that to all, but there are a couple of issues with doing that. One, you apply this calibration to all the lenses you use (not good) and two, I'm not sure it made any difference anyway. Any thoughts on this? More info: I am using a k-1. Any thoughts?

Pentax K3 III Overheating

It makes sense that having the live view on will cause it to heat up more than normally. This generation of heat will also cause a loss of battery life, as energy has been used to heat it up. Coupled with 90 degree heat I think this would explain the overheating.

New HD 16-50mm F2.8 PLM Pre-order in Australia

Interestingly, once the exchange rate is taken into account, it is cheaper to purchase from Pentax Australia than Adorama. I wonder if that is a consistent thing? ie is it always cheaper to buy from Pentax Australia than from overseas (to us) outlets?

I'm wondering if the 55-300 PLM might come into its own here with its very quick focussing? I also like the idea of a bird table because of the notion of bringing the birds closer to the photographer. I love the advice about using AFC and back button focussing. What a brilliant group this is!

Yes, there is also such a thing as a goodwill repair, where Pentax may offer to repair the camera free of charge even though it is outside the warranty period. May be worth a try if all else fails.

Yes, that should work. You should also be able to change the number of shots you want in your bracket from 3 to 5

On the subject of which, I have a K-1 and also find the beep to be very useful. However, is there a quick way of turning it on and off rather than diving into the menus?

Wait, a software hack??? This has me interested. Is it possible to do a software hack on my old K5 which will maybe allow focus peaking? And, whilst I am at it, can said software hack also allow use of a PLM lens? ps I do know that a 55-300 PLM "works" on my K5, but will be wide open.

Maybe it is possible to set up a USER preset. In it you could use a shutter priority mode and set the shutter speed to your desired speed, maybe run with auto iso too? In it you could also specify spot metering or whatever you desire

It's a bit closer than I expected. I did note that the highlights were more blown out on the kit lens though. Both are surprisingly sharp. Great idea though!

There is an amazing amount of stuff on YouTube. With me I find the difficulty is knowing what it is that I need to ask. My use of language may not match with the actual tecnical names for what I am trying to do. Accordingly, it normally takes me a couple of clicks to find what I want. Once found I will normally choose the shortest video available. I have also come across Matt: Matt Kloskowski | Lightroom, Photoshop, Photography Training and find him to be pretty good too.
