Checking out a Pentax SMC-A 35-105mm F3.5 - focus scale oddity

Following on from the above, I've just compared the field of view at the short end, which should be 35mm, with that from a DA 35mm AL F2.4, on the same camera, on a tripod, without moving the camera between shots.

The short end of the 35-105 is noticeably longer than the 35mm prime, ie the magnification is significantly greater.

This is consistent with the zoom ring not moving all the way to the 35mm end of the scale, as shown in my earlier picture of the lens.

So I'm increasingly suspicious that there's something wrong with the lens.

Still grateful for any comments about whether this sort of thing is normal. I've never seen the focus scale issue on any lens before, however, so I'm highly suspicious.

Checking out a Pentax SMC-A 35-105mm F3.5 - focus scale oddity

A friend has bought a SMC-A 35-105mm F3.5 for her son, who has a K1000 and is getting into all-manual B&W photography.

I'm checking the lens over for her on my K-3 before she gives it to him, and I've found something rather odd about it.

Cosmetically it's excellent, verging on mint. The front and rear elements could do with a clean, but they're undamaged. The aperture control is smooth and the iris opens and closes perfectly.

The focus and zoom rings are tight and smooth, just as you'd expect for a good example of one of the old A series lenses. Exposure isn't bad, indicating that the lens is stopping down correctly in the A setting.

However.... I've noticed two oddities - one minor, one potentially major.

The minor one is that the zoom ring doesn't go all the way to the 35mm marking at the wide end, as you can see here

The major one is that at all distances, the focus distance scale is miles wrong. For instance, at the 105mm end of the zoom I can focus on chimneys half a mile away, and the focus scale says 3m (yes, three meters). At the 35mm end, the effect is even more pronounced - I have to shift into macro mode to get the same chimneys sharp with an indicated focus distance of under 1.5 m.

I've got the K-3's AF set to use the center spot only, and the visible sharpness in the viewfinder corresponds to the in-focus hexagon. I've also tried the lens on my K5-IIs and the issue is exactly the same.

I can't believe this can be right - it seems like there's something very wrong with the internals, but I'd be grateful for any thoughts or comments.

Well FWIW, and I understand the purist arguments against the built-in, losing it is a big disappointment for me.

I have two 540-FGZs that I use remotely at parties and small gigs. They sit on their stands, usually pointing at a white wall or ceiling, and I fire them from the pop-up. That gets me great exposure from pretty much anywhere in the room since PTTL just figures it all out. Not sure how a 3rd party wireless trigger is going to do that. So I'm forced now to add a controller to the hot shoe - more bulk which I just don't want when I'm moving around a room trying to be as inconspicuous as possible.

I also often use the pop-up for a little fill-in outdoors, where I really don't want to have to carry more stuff.

For me, it's removing a feature I use a lot, and replacing it with a feature that I may use occasionally.

That's a big lose for me. Love the other additions, I'd have bought the K-3 II in an instant without the GPS. Not so sure now.

I struggled long and hard to choose between 3, 4, 9, 12, all of which I thought were magnificent. JMHO - the others were barely behind and not really for any but the most subjective impressions. I'd be very proud to have taken any of them.

Yes it can.

It does not need to be line of sight from the camera to the flash for the AF540FGZ to fire - there just needs to be enough of the pop-up's flash reflected from the surroundings back to the AF540FGZ's sensor.

Getting the exposure right, or at least the way you want it, can be a bit trial and error though if the relative positions of camera flash and subject are strange.

+1 again for SRS. They're a Pentax Pro centre, and you get a two year warranty on new cameras.

Great for service too if anything goes wrong, as it did for me once.

How to switch between the 2 different memory cards?
Posted By ChrisA

Well this is the strange thing. The scroll wheel only switches between the three standard options - Sequential, Both, or RAW/JPG.

Whether it shows the arrow against 1 or 2 in Sequential mode, can be changed - but only (AFAICT) by switching off, taking a card out, switching back on, and then replacing the card.

Given that it can detect which card is installed, set Sequential to 1 or 2 accordingly, and remember the setting when two cards are in place, why on earth don't they make the scroll wheel cycle Seq1, Seq2, Both, RAW/JPG when there are two cards present?

I can achieve what I want (ie, write to slot 2 most of the time), but what a lot of messing about to switch. Plain daft.

Speaking as a programmer, then either they didn't think to do this, in which case they're seriously lacking in the "spot the obvious" department, or if they thought about it and didn't implement it, it can only be because there is some horror of spaghetti code in there that would be too risky to change. Though since the K-3 is the first 2-card camera, the code to manage that is all new, so it shouldn't be spaghetti yet...

Thank you for that rather patronising explanation.

AAMOF, I am a programmer, and I've made my living at it for 25 years. And I know full well that it's not a trivial exercise.

I also know that it's not solely up to the programmers. It's also up to the testers, and the constraints they're all under. Management want it good, fast and cheap, and don't realise that the very best you can achieve is two out of the three.

None of that changes the fact that just because it's good, doesn't mean that we're unreasonable wanting it better.

I use an Eye-Fi card in slot 2, as a convenient way of getting images off the camera when I'm only taking the odd one or two at a time, which is most of the time.

So mostly I'd want it to use that. However I'd like to be able to switch to a larger, faster card in slot 1, if I suddenly find myself in a situation where I want to take a larger number of pics in quick succession. Which isn't all that uncommon.

Quite disappointed that now that I have two slots, I can't do that - It doesn't seem like much to ask.

Not the end of the world, I can obviously take out the Eye-Fi card, but all the same...

K-3, AF.S Focus-Priority question

Yeah I know, but there's no reason why that has to be the case.

They could choose to have the CiF switch work for AF lenses too with the body switched to manual.

It's a 'nice to have', for sure, but so are a lot of things that they've implemented quite nicely.

Yes, and if the Focus-Priority selection prevented OOF shutter release with the body set to MF, Focus Catch would work with AF lenses as well.

Given that they've given us Release Priority as an option, it seems a pointless restriction to disable the effect of Focus Priority with the body set to MF.

K-3, AF.S Focus-Priority question

AF lens on camera, body set to AF:

With AF.S and Focus-Priority set, the shutter doesn't release unless the camera is giving focus confirmation, as expected.

AF lens on camera, body set to MF:

With AF.S and Focus-Priority as above, the shutter releases whether there's focus confirmation or not.

Firmware 1.03.

Why the inconsistency?

Many thanks for that.

The ExifToolGUI gives the shutter count.

Dropping a DNG file on to a shortcut gives a CMD window that scrolls through a lot of info, and then disappears too quickly to see, and dropping a file on to the ExifTool exe stored on the desktop seems to include only basic information.

The GUI works for me, though, thanks again.

PhotoME isn't able to extract the Manufacturer's Notes section from K-3 image EXIF data. So the shutter count can't be found with PhotoME as far as I can tell.

I know there's a tool here that lets you upload a JPG file and detect the shutter count, but I'd prefer a locally installable one that works with K-3 DNGs.

Anyone know of one? Preferably with a WIndows GUI rather than a command line.
