The EM10 is a nice camera and seems to tick all the boxes for you, although the LCD is of the tilting variety and doesn't swivel.

Pentax 300 lens choice

Carol, I think the A* 300/4 is an excellent choice. It has a good reputation not only on PF but on other forums dedicated to older lenses. A good copy should easily be sharper than the DA 55-300.

Sometimes around Christmas there are good deals to be had on the used market, as people sell-off old stuff either to make money or because they have a new toy and no longer need the old one.

IMO $400 for a A* 300/4 is a decent deal, provided the lens is in excellent condition optically and mechanically. It is fairly light and short and hopefully pairs well with your 1.4x TC to give you 400/5.6.

If you don't like it, you should be able to re-sell for little-to-no loss.

FWIW, a couple years ago I had a Tak 300/4 and it was significantly sharper than either of the DA 55-300's I've owned. There are, of course, a few poor copies of the A* 300/4 (and M*) floating around, so make sure you can return a defective one.

Nah, it comes down to what a forum full of strangers thinks. I guess you didn't get the memo titled "How to Make Decisions in the 21st Century". :p

+1

One of the reasons I enjoy my K-01 so much is because it's so unconventional-looking. The K-5/K-3 series are handsome DSLR's, and that does have an impact on me, compared to the rather homely Canikon offerings in the same class. And really if a person, just by looking at and holding a Fuji camera, feels let's go and make some photos, that's as good a reason as any to buy one.

The subject will be far from exciting - an old Nissan Sentra :) - but hopefully the results will be useful to you. I'll post the pics tomorrow evening.

I think the very first thing to consider is if you enjoy the EVF experience as much as an OVF. I'm fine with both, but I totally get it when a person says they like only one or the other.

I have the 360B - it's a heckuva lens. Similar optics to the 60B from what I've read. Shooting it wide open can be hard. Part of my problem is that the focus ring is not as damped as I'd like, and it turns "the wrong way". I could try some wide open "whole car" shots tomorrow and post 'em here, if you think that would help (I shoot APS-C).

Rich, beautiful color. Very pleasing images photos.

I don't think I would have seen the composition on your second photo, had I been in your boots. It was not until I took a second look at it that I realized how nice of a composition it is (as opposed to it being simply a pretty picture).

They look even better on your Flickr. :)

Nice work nabbing that GBH. They're tops on my list of favorite birds.

I get what the other poster is saying about the busy background, but there's not much you can do about it - the angle of the sun through the leaves is just going to make a bright, contrasty background. At least it's colorful and pretty.

We shoot what we can get, and I think you did a nice job with this.

Had a chance today to meet Lucy, my brother's five week old kitten. She's a little perpetual motion machine (well, almost) and that, combined with generally poor lighting, makes things less than great for the poor K-01. Horses for courses, and the K-01 is not the best horse for this course. First time I've ever photographed a kitten this young.

Yup. Nearly all my shooting is outdoors and sometimes in harsh light, so I usually have EV set to between -0.5 to -1.5, depending on the body/lens combo.

Each of the last two years I've had a small (~20 sq ft) patch of wild daisies grow in the middle of the back yard. It might look out of place considering the rest of the yard is mowed on a regular basis, but I think it's cute and it's neat to have a little semi-contained world to watch and photograph.

A quartet of snaps taken this week, again the K-01 + F 35-70 + Asahi Pentax Close-Up Lens No. 1.

In a rut...

Eh, I get in a photographic rut from time to time. My photographic world is very small. I think sometimes a person just needs to let himself be for a while.

If you have any teleconverters, close-up adapters, etc try using them in combinations that you've never used before.

I've also found that cleaning my camera and lenses gets the enthusiasm going a bit, too.

Fuji XT-2 vs Pentax K3II for Portraits
Posted By luftfluss

Hmmm. I see excellent portraiture and wildlife photos done with Pentax on this forum, so I can't really say what it is about Pentax that is holding you back. I don't shoot portraits so I don't have anything productive to say regarding settings or technique. I can say that @Rondec, who posted earlier in this thread, shoots some of the finest, restrained, tasteful, impromptu portraits I've ever seen, using various Pentax bodies and lenses. And there are several other members here who post polished, professional-level model shots on a regular basis. Look how well @clackers managed the light in the portrait he posted.

The way I see it - and I think I'm being objective - is that you can ditch the Pentax APS-C stuff because you like the Fuji system, and it can be nice to have different shooting experiences by using 2 systems. I think that helps keep things fresh. Or you can ditch the Fuji gear, because by using 2 Pentax bodies you can share lenses and have a fairly consistent shooting experience. That streamlines things. But to divest yourself of your Pentax APS-C setup because it can't do what your Fuji gear can do seems, to me, a fallacy.

Whatever you do, it's not like you'll be losing out. You will still be using fine equipment. Just do what will make you happy.

Funnily enough, the much-vaunted Fuji (default) color rendering doesn't fare so well in this comparo (neither does Pentax):

Of course, the whole color thing is entirely subjective, and eminently tweakable.

Hmm, you took this in a different direction than I intended, probably my fault for lacking concision :hmm:

My "concern" is that companies may stop creating cameras that are a tactile and functional delight for photographers - cameras that practically beg to be used because the simple act of photographing with them is pleasing, regardless of the outcome - in favor of machines that are mega-specified and take fine pictures but don't seem to offer much tactile encouragement. I've read a number of people express this sentiment about the Sony A7, for example.

Of course, this is highly subjective on my part (feel is a big part of my enjoyment of photography), but I've used a dozen cameras from half a dozen brands and none of them feel let's go quite like my K-5 II.

Well, I'm still happily shooting a K-01 & K-5 II, so...

A $99 premium for the exclusivity of the kit seems low... but I don't know Pentax's history with pricing on this sort of thing.
