I've just come back from a hike in the Victorian Alps. I took all my gear but was generally too tired to get it out. I did try my hand at a star trail which worked out ok.

Landscape The Pinnacles at Cape Woolami

Last Friday evening I took a trip to Cape Woolami at Phillip Island. It's a stunning location, and as has loads of photo spots, top of which is The Pinnacles. I was shooting in brackets, and first blended a few images together, but then realized how much dynamic range the K5 IIs has and just adjusted one image. I think the result is much more natural than the blended version I did.
Hope you like it.

I'm really enjoying getting out with my K5 IIs, there's certainly a crazy amount of options and settings to fiddle with, but I'm starting to get to grips with it.
Here is a shot from yesterday at Cape Schanck, it's a stunning location.

I got a new used Pentax K5 IIs yesterday so I was all excited to take it out. I went for a trip down to Cape Schanck, and I think the excitement got the better of me, there are so many potentially amazing shots and I couldn't make up my mind and get changing spot. In the end I got my best shot walking back to the carpark. I have to be more thoughtful, and plan a shot out, not jump around like an ADD 10 year old.

This may be my last outing with my Kr, I've just bought a used K-5 IIs which I'm really excited to get and play with.

I'm quite happy with this shot, though I did have to do quite a bit of cropping, one day I'll get better at getting the framing right when I'm shooting.

Now that's an intense sky, I do like that part, but I think I prefer the rocks and seaweed in mine.

I'm looking at used, there aren't many (if any ) 18-135mm avalible, and the ones that come up go in a second. I can get a used 16-50 for about $450. I also like the idea of having a faster lens as I don't have one at the moment. I know this may not be the sharpest wide open, but I'm not going to be doing landscapes wide open, generally things where sharpness isn't as bigger issue to me. Also I just like the idea of a DA* lens, what can I say I lust after the gold ring.

Also I meant to say Star shot, where a faster lens is an advantage.

In the end I've ended up getting a K5 IIs used (low shutter count) and a RRS L bracket for $375 aud which I thought was a pretty good deal. I'm very excited to see what I can do with it, I'm going hiking for a couple of nights in 2 weeks so I'll take it then.
The only problem is that I now what to get some wr lens, thinking the DA* 16-50 as it's cheeper than the other options apart from the 18-55, and the 2.8 aperture should be good for stat shots. I've got a serious case of GAS

After a bit more playing in lightroom here's where I've ended up. I think the extra saturation an a little less exposure makes it pop a bit more.

Hi All,
I took this photo yesterday and was wondering what you would do with it. You can download the png here if you want a play.

Thanks very much for the advice, I've gone back and straightened it all up (took me a while to work out how, but got there in the end). It really has made a huge difference to the feel of the photo, I knew there was something I didn't like about it but couldn't work it out. I'm going to have to write myself a check list of thing to check for in post.
Cheers

I thought I'd have another go at processing an image with Lightroom HDR. I wanted to try to keep it looking pretty natural, though looking at it again today I may have pushed it too far. What do you guys think?

I did notice the K70 with 18-55WR $888 delivered and it is certainly making me think.

I lenses I currently have are; Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6, DA 16-45 f4, A50 f1.7 and the two kit lens that came with the camera. I'm currently fairly happy with what I've got, though at some stage I would like to get the 18-135 to take when trying to travel light. I do quite like the idea of having the 18-55WR as it would give me a cheap WR option to take out in the weather.

I certainly like the look of the k70, especially the tilting screen, that is something that I would find really helpful. But for $400 more it's a stretch

I was thinking K70, but a new one is around $950 in Australia and there aren't any used ones yet. I can get a K5 IIs for about half that which I why I'm leaning that way. I was watching a K3 with a Pentax grip for $900 but was too slow to move and it's gone. Maybe I just need a bit more patients.

After quite a few successful years with my K-r I'm looking it's time to upgrade. I really only do landscape photography so my concerns are generally sharpness (I know a lot of this is the lens though), dynamic range, toughness, I'd also like it to have better high iso noise performance than the K-r which gets pretty poor after 1600.

I'm looking to upgrade on a pretty tight budget, so really looking at second hand. I'm leaning towards a k5 IIs due to cost, but I'm wondering if going for a K-3 or maybe a K70 would be worth the extra money. Large prints aren't a huge concern but I'd like to be able to print up to A3 (10" x 16") which 16mp should be able to do, so I would have thought the extra megapixels aren't a big deal for me.

Any advice and real world use cases would be great.
Thanks

I like what you've done, especially the bale, I really didn't put any work into that at all. I would have liked to have done a bit more work to the image but photoshop is pretty much unusable on my new laptop (I got one with a high dpi screen and everything is tiny). I might have to spend a bit more time on it.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Here is the original photo, which was very dark. Then under that is after I've made some edits in Lightroom, before any work in Photoshop.

Yeah I tried to lighten him in Photoshop (he was much darker originally), I just started to think it was looking too HDRish if I pushed him further. It would have been a good place to have had a flash for some fill light. That's the next piece of kit on the shopping list.
