go.skimresources is analytics tracking used for externally-bound links. My ad blockers are always triggered whenever I click on an eBay link from these forums because of it, but it's actually pretty harmless. If you're not blocking ad links, then it will ultimately resolve to the URL that OP posted.

I have a KP. First time hearing about this app, but I'll give it a shot over the next few days. Anything specific you would like tested or just use the app as much as I can and see if anything stands out as not working properly?

As ramseybuckeye mentioned, you need to click the link. You also have to have an Amazon-branded credit card to be eligible. The prices are "full price", but you get X% cash back on your credit card after the fact (they say up to 2 statement cycles). It cannot be combined with the payment plan option as you must choose the % back during checkout. See this screenshot for an example.

Shipments of SLRs and mirrorless cameras in 2019

There are other things to consider looking at these numbers and trying to decide if 40,000 units is "good or bad". Canon and Sony used to have a big digital video camera market, which has largely been rolled into their DSLR market. I'd be curious how many units of video cameras they used to sell and if their DSLR numbers have offset that reduction 1:1. They also spend significantly more on advertising (at least in the US), which means profit margins could be quite a bit lower than that of Pentax products. As vector mentioned, it boils down to profitability not just market share. There are lots of companies out there in markets dominated by bigger companies that server a particular market and can continue to thrive by meeting the needs of their more niche demographic.

D-BG7 grip D-LI109 insert tray?

Sure, and no mention of it in the description (or even that the grip supports the D-Li109 at all), and the "What's in the box" section just says a 1 year warranty. I may have glanced over that photo, but it's definitely not apparent that it serves that purpose. Ah well. Now I know!

Hopefully I can find one, or this might be one of those perfect opportunities to convince my wallet that I should get a 3D printer...

D-BG7 grip D-LI109 insert tray?

When I was researching prices, I didn't see mention of this insert anywhere and interpreted it the same way you did. That it would "just work" with the KP's battery. It was only today when my camera ran out of juice unexpectedly that I realized the battery wasn't sitting correctly and then saw a product photo on Ricoh's site that shows the insert. Of course it doesn't SAY anything about the insert, so it's really just something you would only know about if you got it new in box, I guess!

I picked up a used D-BG7 grip and went to pop in my spare D-LI109 battery and realized that apparently there should be an insert/adapter/tray so that the battery will actually sit in the grip properly. I can't find a part number or find that piece for sale anywhere (at least not yet). Anyone know of somewhere I might be able to pick one up? It's proving to either not be something you can get separately anywhere, or uses a search term that I just haven't clued in on yet. I figure I can probably cut some cardboard to get everything seated, but it would be nice to have the proper-fitting part if possible.

Concerns about focus adjustment on KP with SMC DA 18-135 WR

Well...crud. I had assumed that at 100% crop with these particular lenses (wide open, fully zoomed for the 18-135) that I shouldn't expect sharp without a bit of post. Unless we have a different definition of acceptability for sharp.

Here's samples with lighting and some post for contrast and levels (no sharpening). This was +8 AF adjusted, 1/160, f 5.6, ISO 400 at 135mm. I made sure my camera was level using the built-in sensors, but I think I was just a bit too elevated compared to the focus card. I was aiming for the center of the QR code.

---------- Post added 09-05-20 at 03:32 PM ----------

And I think that's part of my problem today. I went from the Kr to a KP (past few weeks) and I'm just starting to scrutinize the new camera and lenses. Over analyzing and not accounting for double the MP!

Thanks again

Ah, OK. This is what I was after. The fact that lenses may require going as "extreme" as a +8 is relatively normal makes me feel better. When looking at adjustments like these, having to go all the way to an end of the available adjustment range seems like a red flag. It sounds like the -10 to +10 range is actually a completely acceptable variance and one should only be worried if you find a need to go outside of that range.

Man I love this forum. Thank you all for the help!

Isn't that what the DotTune video is all about? Get the lens to focus, switch to manual, then make sure the green dot stays solid and adjust the fine tuning until it does? It was actually incredibly helpful to take that video's approach and stop with the "take a photo, review, adjust, take a photo, review, adjust..."

Using this method, I was getting to a +7 or +8 for achieving the green dot, but still getting it at +10. Below +7 and I was no longer getting the indicator. It feels too high to be "normal", but it could be I've just never had to deal with it before.

That very well could be. The 18-135 does have a min focus distance that might be pushing back further that you might expect for this testing, though. I'm at about 2 - 2.5ft away (0.6 - 0.8 meters). I'm new to using these focus charts as well.

The problem I ran into with my Kr and an older lens was that the focus alert and dots were signaling in focus, but the shots weren't. Maybe it was a different setting to account for that and I've confused the different cameras.

I'll definitely check out that video, thanks!

These are cropped at 100%, so I'd expect fuzziness, CA, and lack of IQ for the posted images. Having to go +10 on any lens (and I was making adjustments per lens) seems extreme. And the 18-135 being quite a common lens on these forums leads me to believe I certainly shouldn't expect to have to go that high. I was basing my judgments on what was in focus around the 0 mark looking for DOF on either side. I cropped to 100% to get a more defined scope of the DOF, but maybe that's my main mistake.

I will set up another round of tests with proper lighting and drop ISO to 200.

Thanks for the guidance!

Looks like a solid deal to me. I have been using my Kr for 9 years, and just upgraded to a KP this summer but will continue to use my Kr on occasion. The AA adapter for the Kr was incredibly useful, and those 2 kit lenses are great for starting out.

I also did a test with my SMC FA 50mm 1.4 all the way open at 1/320 and ISO 800. This test seems much more in line with what I would expect, which at least helps me understand it's very likely not the camera itself.

I went out shooting this morning and when I got home, I saw that the majority of my photos were really just not quite focused correctly. I've just upgraded to a KP from a Kr and figured maybe I still need to get used to some of the nuances of higher resolution, more (and faster) AF points, and new lenses I was working with. I decided to set up a little focus test on my desk, and I'm a concerned about the results. Camera was on a tripod, 135mm, ISO 800, 1/60, f 5.6. These are the 3 extremes using the build-in AF fine tuning (single lens). The +10 seems like the best of the 3, and I've never had to make more than a +- 1 or 2 adjustment before, and that was with an older MF lens.

Am I going crazy? Am I testing this wrong? I know my lighting could be better, but this seems quite extreme.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Yeah, I'm liking this KP already. Obviously any decision I made was going to be a big step up from the K-r, but I'm quite happy with the decision of the KP over the K-3ii. I've switched the hand grips about a dozen times so far and have landed on the medium grip, for now. I had assumed I would use the large grip and installed that first, but I've found the way my fingers rest with the medium grip is actually more comfortable. That may change, but if anyone else is going through the decision-making process and lands on a KP, I definitely recommend experimenting with all 3 sizes if you have them. For reference, I can palm a basketball :D

Here are some unwilling participants in my initial tests. Both shots were with the Pentax SMC FA 50mm 1.4 lens and no post other than the text overlays. The cat is at ISO 200 (and I used the tilt screen to get ground-level!) and the dog at ISO 6400. There's definitely some noise at 6400, but nowhere near to the degree that I would have seen with my K-r and likely better than the K-3ii. The significant difference in resolution compared to the K-r is a definite game changer for someone trying to take photos of kids, too. So much more room to crop for small to medium prints.

Looking forward to getting out of the house and doing more testing!

Went out and bought a KP. Thank you to all who provided insight. It just arrived in the last 30 minutes, so I won't have useful feedback just yet :)

For what it's worth, I snagged it from Amazon from their "Renewed" store, which by itself includes a 90-day warranty/refund policy. It was $608, came with everything from the box (looks previously unopened...) and has a 12 shutter count. Pretty happy with that deal!

Very first initial reactions:
  • Definitely feels different in my hand from a K-r from an ergonomics POV. Will take a bit of adjustment. (I have large hands and have already installed the L grip. Sits differently in my palm than the K-r.)

  • So. Many. Dials. Overwhelming and incredibly exciting.

  • Fact that it uses the same battery as my K-r is awesome. I already have backup power!

  • Man, this thing feels solid and durable.

  • I never really used Live View with the K-r, but I can definitely see the advantage of this tilt-out screen. Going to reevaluate some of my shooting style.

  • No, really. So. Many. Dials.

Thanks so much for all of the useful replies!

OK - so the K-70 is officially out. Not seeing enough of a benefit other than saving some money, but I'd rather make a better investment and the price difference seems well worth it. I was leaning more heavily towards the K-3ii because of the FPS, buffer, and build design, but I think I'm now back leaning the KP direction as "best all-around bet". The low-light and AF performance are consistently praised as the best Pentax has to offer in APS-C both on this site and many others.

The GPS vs built-in flash point is not really a factor for me, but if it was an even toss-up between the K-3ii and KP I'd lean towards the GPS as I'd get more use from it. I've never had GPS on a camera and could buy the add-on if I really wanted to get into astro and use that feature. Tilting LCD could be nice, but again I've never had it and wouldn't miss it. 3 scroll wheels would be nice as I do struggle with that on the K-r when shooting in M.

I will definitely improve my lens selection, but for now I'm happy with what I have been using for what I need. Makes more sense for me to step up on the camera body (again, coming from a K-r) and get more from my existing lenses. That 55-300 PLM is likely jumping towards the top of the list...but that will be research for another time!

Still haven't 100% decided on KP vs K-3ii, but it does seem to make sense to go with the KP unless I can find a great deal on a K-3ii.

That said, here's a question about buying used: KP shutter life being half of the K-3ii is a minor concern. I really mean minor as 100K is likely plenty for me. However, what are the problems that cameras with higher shutter counts run into? If a used camera has 10-20% of it's theoretical shutter life "used up", (thinking a K-3ii with 20-40K clicks), would it have any noticeable impact? Obvious concerns of buying used vs new aside. I'm just trying to understand the shutter life concept and what level of consideration that should play. I know it's really an "it depends" kind of question.

Thanks again for all of the feedback so far!

@aslyfox - Yeah, I've used those comparison tools WAY more than is necessary. (Apparently the facts don't change every time I revisit the page lol). And I've used 3 or 4 other comparison websites just to make extra sure I see the same things again.

I'm not particularly in a rush, but I don't see waiting for the K New worth it at this stage. I'd guess out of the gate it will be above my budget and I'll get more bang for the buck with one of the already mentioned models, especially if I get a lightly-used one.

What are your particular talking points for recommending the K-3ii?

@FozzFoster - It sounds like you'd definitely recommend the KP or K-3ii over the K-70, correct? I agree with the lens assessment, but I think I would rather invest a bit more in the body and get one that meets more needs and will potentially be useful longer. To rephrase, are the features/benefits of the KP or K-3ii worth $200-ish over the K-70?
