(Un)popular Opinion: Pentax AF Doesn't Suck

The arguments suggesting you know nothing about Pentax af unless you use ONE specific lens* makes no sense. All that does is highlight that the lens lineup needs a refresh and that its not good enough at the moment.

But it's hugely relevant info when comparing lenses. It's an outrageously uneven comparison when one lens arbitrarily gets tested with software corrections and another one without.

Future of APS-C

MFT seems to have more format specific lenses than apsc? Only Fuji and Pentax have fully embraced the format. FF lenses on apsc negates the format advantage.
It seems to me MFT is a stronger system than APSC. The sensor size difference to apsc doesn't really matter when the system as a whole is better.

As an apsc shooter I feel in limbo. Pentax FF doesn't have the wide to normal prime lenses I want. I'm also not keen on the weight increase, most of my photography is under travel like circumstances and when I shoot I tend carry the camera all day, including meals and drinks. FF mirrorless would technically be quite good for my needs but I really despise EVF's.

There haven't been any IQ improvements for low iso since my K-3 II. Pixelshift, gps, ovf makes the K-3 II the best camera on the market for me which is all good I'm in no hurry to upgrade the body. It's the lenses that are troublesome. The da* 11-18 is a zoom, very expensive and has some characteristics that I don't like. Despite not wanting it I'm considering the lens. Unfortunately the second hand market would mean a huge loss if I don't love the lens. So as I said limbo :(

Perhaps I'm missing something but wouldn't this introduce further tolerance/calibration issues with af? The contrast detect is not on the actual sensor but on a secondary one meaning there's alignment that could go wrong?

I really like the idea of developing new tech for the ovf. Hopefully we'll see it in production and it working well.

Pixel Shifted Images

Depending on the scene it can be useful to turn off "fill holes" in the pixelshift settings. By default (quite reasonably I think) the algorithm fills holes in the mask exempting more area from pixelshift. Try in for your scenes to see what you think. It's under raw tab > demosaicing > Motion correction: custom > uncheck "fill holes in motion mask"

By switching to custom there's lots of knobs to turn and switches to flick if you really want to squeeze the last shift out of those pixels. I think the defaults are generally quite good but its worth fiddling around a bit.

I guess there is a risk that as the market contracts brands will differentiate along various lines including focusing on primes OR zooms. Pentax is arguably defined by their primes (Limiteds) but that could of course change with ownership.

Sure, but they do make it complicated for Pentax. You *need* cheapish primes and you *need* top performance and durability primes. The limited are neither but as you say they arguably define Pentax.

So Pentax need three separate lines of prime lenses. Must be really hard to decide which one to release at any given point. None of the lines will ever appear complete or even adequate.

Perhaps the current limited lineup should be considered complete? A nice set of near normal lenses for both FF and apsc. Extreme fl limiteds would be an odd development don't you think? Would make the above pickle easier to get out of as well.

Let me fix that for you ;-)

The limiteds complicate this picture because they are slow and expensive whilst being small and nice jewellery. They necessarily become a third line which must be difficult for a company that appears to keep new products at a minimum.

Perhaps it the pace of releases and age of lenses but I do find the Pentax lineup and release schedule a bit confusing. They would imho do well to consolidate into lines. Fuji is doing this in an exemplary way. It's not very hard to understand their releases. Pentax seems, to my prime wide to normal eyes, to release a lot of strange consumer zooms near the kit spec in various overlapping forms. I understand they probably make sense to someone but they don't to me.

Norm, I correctly picked the sensor size from low res images in the above blind test. Its just one data point and I won't promise 100% hit rate but there are qualities that sometimes are visible at smaller sizes.

Wow! I had them in the correct order! I formulated my thinking/observations before checking the exif this was my thinking:
  • I immediately thought the first one was apsc. For me you can usually tell smaller formats by crunched up colours, it's hard to explain but is more obvious when comparing really tiny sensors. Small formats feel less airy.

  • The second two I had to compare. I wasn't very sure but I don't' think I've seen that sort of airy wide framing look so relaxe((iq wise) on FF. Comparing the two I decided the last one was the largest format.

You can ruin a medium format photo in PP so that it looks like a apsc shot. Heavy handed PP will do this and I've seen examples of it. I'm an apsc shooter myself but have been intrigued by larger formats for a while. I usually want deep dof but feel that larger formats have advantages beyond dof control, a relaxed quality.

All my lenses require focus adjustment. The da 50mm/1.8 is the worst and I have it maxxed out at +10.

RICOH ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF HD PENTAX-D FA★50mm F1.4 SDM AW STAR-SERIES LENS

I wanted to compare with other lenses so I went looking for dpreview photos taken under similar circumstances with other lenses. Pentax has been shot under *way* more demanding circumstances than any other lens I could find. Most of the images are stress tests. This is also the case for the yet to be reviewed da* 11-18.

The Pentax images look very good however partly because the bright high contrast against the light photos. So at least the galleries look better than the competition.

We've seen and discussed the loca before and it's real and can probably be annoying. Thing is that they do seem to fail at comparisons. The sigma art is the only real comparison when price is taken into account and that lens seems a bit worse in most ways. Despite this it got way better score...

A mirrorless price war is going to make Pentax look less attractive. Recent reviews of the dfa 50 does suggest they might be able to go upmarket though.

Mirrorless looks more and more like a con to cut cost and increase prices. Will be interesting to see how low they can go in a price war.

As a prime shooter I've told myself not to consider the da* 11-18 because it's a generously sized zoom. So when looking at a Irix 15 I noticed that the Irix is actually larger! (same length but wider). Kills that argument... price is still smaller though. Of course the Irix is full frame but that's of little comfort for an apsc shooter.

For medium format mirrorless seems like great technology. Both in terms of size reduction when getting rid of that huge mirror box and in terms of shooting style. The advantages are reduced with sensor size reduction. As a wide angle to normal shooter there seems to be real advantages as well.

However I hate looking through evfs . The beautiful light of a scene gets scrunched up into a TV like experience lacking in tonal subtleties. Technically its helpful in achieving the shot but ruins the experience.

Averaged contrast across the field in perfect conditions compared to the same under flare conditions ? Trouble is, of course, that the conditions at which flare occurs varies a lot and so does the subjective judgement of which conditions are important.

Personally I find the 15ltd best for reportage style photography. The edges are often to blurry for my taste regardless of f stop for architecture and landscape. It's beautiful for reportage style portraits and close ups.

I still use it when I shouldn't and swear by the computer every time I get home :)
