Is Super Takumar 50mm f1.4, 8-element worth $200?

Yeh, I agree (I've read alot of threads like that.) The only reason that I bought a UV filter was for easy cleaning after I visit beaches. A place like Huntington Beach, oh my, those small particles attach to glass surface are terrible!:) Thanks for the info!

Yep, I totally agree!:)

Actually, a Pentax skylight filter came with the lens, but I took it off when testing a lens after the first day. I've put off purchasing a polarizer, but I guess now it's the time:)

Your boy's pictures always amaze me!;) I've read some negative opinions about using a filter on, so I try not to use one-I currently have a UV filter only.
But do you have good experience with a polarizer, especially for super tak? I was eyeing on a Marumi one but have not bought one yet.
I've thought if I produce more videos, then I would buy an ND filter, but it's for later when I really need it.
If you think a polirizer works well with this takumar, I'd definitely consider it.:)

I took some photos in lunch time-it's sunny southern California at 1 PM, and you know what I mean. I used a flower-type hood which is not very deep. The first one at f2.8 and the next at f4. First one shows some CA in nearby (framed) tree, but due to the silhouette-effect, this CA is unavoidable, I guess. The second shot is at f4 and I don't see CA in tree leaves. If I'm not wrong, I don't think I need to worry about CA from this lens, right?;)

What I'm impressed is the expression of this lens-as the first one shows, a distant tree in the center has some kind of 3-D pop. And also the last picture-I took this scene with various lenses, but this takumar shows certain quality that only this one can exhibit. It's like 35mm film? not sure but some kind of nostalgia-like quality. I think I'd really love this lens!

No, I didn't use a filter or a hood. I didn't know if a lens hood could make that much difference in CA-I thought lens hood was just to prevent flare, etc..
I have a generic flower type hood that is not deep in my bag now. I also have a collapsible rubber hood in my home.

I've seen some takumars with a deep hood (3.5/135). What kind of hood do you use and recommend?

Thanks for your great tips, I could get pretty satisfactory results this morning for the same scene as yesterday morning. I took this red car and trees again at f2.8, ISO 100. With a bit of PP, I could get pretty good result. I think this lens is in excellent condition both cosmetically and functionally, considering its age. I guess I was lucky to get it at around $150. Only one concern is CA in high contrast area as my previous post. Is it unavoidable due to its old coating? Or what would be the best way to reduce it? Thank you.

You were absolutely right. The settings were all wrong-I didn't even set the custom settings in Menu (Use Apature Ring option) right because I had sent my K-3 to Precision for a warranty repair and haven't set all the settings back to my preference yet. After I set the settings correct, I took a few shots to see great difference. One thing I noticed is though that the lens shows CA in high contrast area like palm tree leaves in the first photo, even at f8~f16. I could reduce it by warming the color and check "Correct chromatic aberration" option in Adobe camera raw (as the second photo shows,) but is this kind of CA (or purple fringing) typical for this early version? What would be the best way to avoid it?

Oh, the A/M switch! I put it to A yesterday and took all the shots with A setting:) I examined the inside element yesterday by opening the aperture wide open, but only a few dusts there.
I'll check with M setting this lunch time and see if it makes difference. Maybe I need to read more instructions to use this lens? 'Cause I've not read any, I kept pushing the green button as I do with M50 yesterday:lol: I'll update later.

Thank you! The lens looks sharp at f1.4, but it shows some confusing CA sometimes-well, I've taken only ~20 shots, so not for sure. Below is an example that I took this morning in our office parking lot. It was taken at f8, 1/500 sec without a filter, but it shows CA and low contrast. It was 7:20 AM, and I don't think the sun was so bright. I focused on a car's license plate, and the focus was accurate. I took two shots with the same results. It looks the lens shows CA and low contrast when I focus a distant subject. Is this typical? or do I need a deep hood or something? Thanks.

Great shot! Because I've switched to Pentax system, I wanted to experience THE legendary super takumar:) If I don't like it for any reason, I can always sell it. Basically I don't like to keep overlapping lenses, unless they give some different values. I'll see if ST gives any different value from 43mm or M50 f1.7 to me.

UPDATE: I spotted an 8-element 50mm at around $150 and pulled the trigger. First one is the 50mm tak taken with my 43mm and the rest are quick samples taken today at f1.4 only-mostly PP'd for sharpness and resizing. It looks it has some CA, especially when wide open, but it may be due to a filter attached to it. I need to find out more to see its real value of course. Just wanted to share some pics real quick.

Thanks for your great tips, Na Horuk! M 50mm is a great little lens and I love it. Maybe an LBA? or my taste on vintage stuff? ;) but I wanted to try an M42 lens and have already bought an adapter at a good price. So at relatively cheap price (under $80~$100?) I wanted to get an f1.4 lens. For me, longer than 50mm is not very much needed-that's why I'm eyeing on this super tak. Thanks.

I guess it's a pretty wise answer to a rather stupid question :) I totally understand your point. I might need to slightly change my title like this: Does 8-element have twice the value as the 7-element? Or something like that.. I had thought playing around with old M42 lenses would be a big fun, so I already bought a genuine Pentax M42 adapter when I saw a cheap listing. Now I'm in the market for a lens and wondering which one to buy. Since I already have M50, I initially set my budget to less than $80, but got to know this much touted 8-element version and started to wonder if I can justify spending $100 more. ;)

Hi, everyone. I need a lens with great(dreamy) bokeh and sharpness wideopen, so I'm eyeing on Super Takumar 50mm f1.4. It looks 8-element version has less yellow cast and also it's radiation free according to some googling. I actually pretty much like some sample images that I found. But I was surprised by the price of this lens going up to $200, while 7-element version is sold at less than half the price.

I currently have M50 f1.7 and FA 43mm, and I love those lenses, but for dreamy bokeh, I guess I need something different.

I know price is determined by demand, but do you think almost $200 for this Super Takumar 50mm 8-elements is worth it? Or is it some kind of hype?
Other than the bokeh, compared to my two fast lenses, would this super tak give any better rendering?
Thanks for your opinions!

Is this CA normal for 43mm Limited?

i kind of noticed that too when I went out for a shoot last weekend-it look like for some shots, the original hood might not be enough. Would it be recommended to use a bigger lens hood? What is your experience with that? Thanks!

---------- Post added 04-25-15 at 08:22 AM ----------

Could you give me an advice where to find more info? I tried some youtube videos to remove CA or purple fringing in Photoshop, but they didn't fix CA or PF successfully. I'd appreciate if you can give a couple links to learn:)

Thanks!

Hello, I bought a used 43mm Limited and want to check if this kind of CA is normal. As images attached, it shows CA up to f2.5 and gradually disappears from f2.8, then completely disappears at f3.5. Is this typical for a 43mm Limited lens? I've read that 43mm has some CA. Thanks for your comments!

43mm or 50mm macro for product shooting? (studio/scenes)

Oh, I see. You meant it was designed in CAD by some kind of 3D like rendering, right? I thought you meant CAD software has come up with a new function to process actual photo to render this kind of final product. I now see what you meant.

Hmm.. that is very interesting topic that I'm really interested. If you're aware, could you give me a little detail about how to achieve this kind of processing in CAD (or link?) I've known post processing, but CAD processing is a new concept to me that excites me! Thanks.

---------- Post added 04-07-15 at 10:52 AM ----------

That sounds great. So, it doesn't need to be a macro lens? I'm considering either DA 50 f1.8 or FA 50 f1.7, or maybe FA 43mm limited for other types of fun. If it could be done without a macro lens, I don't really want to buy a macro lens frankly.

Just a general question though-normal lens with extension tube and macro lens-do they have any difference? Can I say Macro lens has more corner sharpness, aside from distance? Thanks.
