23 RAW converters for Pentax compared

But a baseline may not have much to do with how you can manipulate the tools available in your editor of choice. It is the end result that matters not the base image in raw development.

23 RAW converters for Pentax compared

I appreciate the effort made here. But the premise that someone wishing to develop their images will just leave it up to an Auto or "no adjustment" function in their raw converter/editor for the final image is not valid, imo. If you are going to develop raw images, then you must put in the effort to get the most out of every image. Presets and styles get you close but there will still be tweaks needed for each image.

Is This Jpg Somehow Better (Recovery) Than It's RAW Version?

I agree with Doug that the main problem here is that you are comparing output from two different raw converters: the in-camera Ricoh and the Adobe ACR converters. The output will never be identical. A better comparison would be to use the PDCU converter since it apparently has much the same engine as the in-camera one.

Sorry, should have mentioned that I have zero Adobe editor experience. I use darktable on linux and it is trivial to disable the base curve and change input profiles there. I note the posted rawdigger histograms show no signs of clipping.

What you are seeing is a result of different default base curve implementations. Turn off the base curve and instead go to a linear input profile and you can then more accurately judge the recorded data via the histogram. Your image will be washed out but it is the "purest" base image with which to work.

Nature A "california" gull or ?

Yes, Ring-billed Gull. You are correct that gull plumages can be difficult to suss out. You need to figure out the age first since some take three years to reach adult plumage and the larger gulls take four years. There are susbstantial plumage changes with each annual molt until the bird reaches adult stage. Ring-billed Gull is a 3-year bird and the bird in your photo has reached its adult plumage, The head will become all white with the partial molt next spring. One key difference between California and Ring-billed Gull is that the Ring-billed has a pale iris and the California's is dark. In combination with the distinct ring around the end of the bill, this gull could only be a Ring-billed.

Dave - It has happened in the past that some people have not been following proper procedure to save the new lens adjustments. You must hit the OK button before exiting the AF tuning menu or else it will all be for naught. Maybe check to see that you are doing that.

AMD Threadripper is very impressive on code built for multiple threads. On single threaded apps, an I9 or Zeon can still beat it but just barely. I will be doing a home build next year so will be interesting to see what is available then.

I disagree, bumping the shadows would remove the drama and tension in the last shot. They are fine as is.

Remember that the only realistic solution to possible data mishaps is to have a good backup strategy in hand before setting out. Living without backups will inevitably bite you in the a**.

You can always make a lens wider by stitching together a panorama. Something to keep in mind.

Hi, Mike. Firstly, I am sort of glad that you had to send your Chinese laptop back. It was giving you problems that should not have been there.

As for your file access question, there are usually two routes to access Windows files from linux: Samba/NTFS or NFS. Both methods have been mature for quite a while on the linux side and each have their advantages. Best you google for setups for these to see what fits your needs. Of course, we are relying on MS to not throw a wrench into their code somewhere but they have been cozying up to Ubuntu in particular the past few years so I doubt they would do this. Some say MS will eventually make a play to buy out Ubuntu's parent company Canonical in the not too distant future but that is speculation. Shuttleworth still has enough big bucks to fend off MS.

Birk - You wrote that pyvips will do its work on the GPU. Does it use opencl for this? Some graphics cards are not strong with opencl. I wonder if that is the roadblock for some?

Adam - I was thinking it would be beneficial to separate camera connection from GUI instantiation. There will be times when I may not have my camera with me but I want to set up a queue for an upcoming astro photo session. As it is now, the app loading will fail if there is no existing camera wifi connection.

Adam - I have been playing around with the latest version. I am unsure about the interval fumction. Standalone intervalometers have 2 main functions: set number of exposures, and set interval between exposures. I can set the interval but cannot see where to set the number of exposures from the app. Is this something that we have to set on camera? I tried opening the About links on 2nd menu tab but they do not open anything.

Hugin did its thing and then it hung on the align_image_stack in pyvips. I let it run for 10 hours before killing it :) Could it be something as simple as the images not being fed sequentially to pyvips?
