FA 1.4/50 vs DA* 1.4/55

The FA 50mm has not so bad resolution at f/1.4, it's just low contrast that kills apparent sharpness, but with some PP it's somewhat fixable. What is less fixable is the bad bokeh (IMO) at f/1.4, but around f/2 it's creamy enough.

I'd like the DA* but the high price, slow focusing and above all the big size make it low on my lens wish list. I love portraits done with the FA 50mm @ f/2.0 and it satisfies me enough that I don't see a big need for the DA*. Otherwise, objectively speaking the DA* has slightly superior IQ, particularly below f/2.

I maybe in the minority here but I prefer an EVF for its unmatched previewing capabilities. I used a GH2 for a while and I would die to get an EVF like this on my K-01. The OVF will die faster than we think IMO, especially in high end cameras where the mirror box is just to slow to compete : the Nikon V1 is already capable of doing 60fps at full resolution. I cannot see how a DSLR could match that with an OVF and mirror unless there is some sort of hybrid solution.

As for Pentax FF, why not a K-01 type of camera? But add an EVF, PD-AF, flippy LCD and WR... and it can be made cheaper and much lighter by removing the prism/mirror box. And start selling it for 1200$. I would buy that in a heart beat, even at 1500$.

Dust alert

It's because they don't explain how to use it correctly. I found it very useful on more than one occasion, especially when traveling. I don't have to time to go back to hotel, check on the computer, etc. While my K-5 doesn't often get dust, frequently changing lenses will always get some dust at one point. And since the K-30 doesn't have the ultrasonic dust removal but the poor (and probably useless. never worked well on my K10D and K20D) sensor shake, it's even more useful to check for dust.

I agree for the horizontal borders but in the center, I don't think there's many lens as sharp as the DA 15mm even at f/4. That's maybe why the borders disappoint. But in many situations it's not a big deal.

Your call but you're delaying your pleasure with this unique lens :)

There's a lot of drama around this name change but for now it's only a label change on the bottom of the camera, nothing to worry about. The real test will be when they will release really new models. When Sony took over Minolta, it took them at least a couple of year before releasing anything substantial, they only had the rather average Alpha 100 for a while. I expect the next big advances will come around september/october.

Another nice user review that compares the HX9v, the RX100 and... the Pentax Q:

I have a simpler answer that does not involve conspiracy theories: incompetence. TBH it's very difficult to make objective measurements but DPR are centering their reviews mostly on IQ and unfortunately they are not that good at that. DXO certainly gained more credibility, at least to my eyes.

Can the K-5 dethrone the D700 ?

This is assuming that the Pentax FF would be unique enough to be desirable by other people than old Pentaxians. Not an easy task as Sony found out. The A900/A850 flop is quite a lesson for Pentax. That's why I think than rather resurrecting old FA* zooms, they should concentrate on what makes them unique: compact bodies, small Ltd primes, low-price good features. I think there is a market for advanced amateur wanting a small high-performing kit. As has been already said many times It's not trying to overdo Canon and Nikon they can succeed.

Imagine this: a K-1 WR with a good sensor in a body not as much bigger than a K-5. Same smooth shutter. SR. Bring back the mechanical coupling for old lenses. Now release this with an updated line of FA Limited: D-FA 31, 43 and 77. Add quick-shift. Add maybe a 20mm f/4 ltd. Release small high performing f/4 zooms rather than the big bulky f/2.8 ones. Those can come later, much later.

That way the K-1 can end up in a Canon/Nikon bag. It can become a complementary system rather than a competing one.

Pentax Q in the Flesh

Too little too late is almost a Pentax signature these last years. Because the Q idea is not bad, it just seems to be under-delivered IMHO and as already said late in the game.

The disappointment comes also from the fact that, except for the K-5, nothing really new came in 2 years. No really new lenses except the boring 18-135 and DA35. Always the same 2 cameras models. No FF on the horizon. And the Q gives the impression that during all this time they were working on a toy camera!

There are many support alternatives like the string monopod. There are mini tripods (one of my favorites is the Tamrac Zipshot, very compact but still a good height). Leaning on a wall, bean bags, etc etc. Practice to see how low you can go with your shutter speed without a real tripod.

You don't need Photoshop but at least an application that is compatible with Photoshop style plug-ins. A cheap one is Photoshop Elements, 90% of what most users need from the real Photoshop at a fraction of the price.

For the plug-in I'd recommend Topaz Denoise.

Lightroom does also a good job and you don't need Photoshop to run it.

There maybe free or open source alternatives but I don't know those.

The K5 is one sharp chicken

With the sharpening tools available it's very easy to make almost any image look sharp. So IMHO a stronger AA filter is preferable to avoid artifacts that are almost impossible to fix. A very weak or no AA filter is only great if you look at your pictures at 100% and don't bother the false colors, moiré, maze artifacts, etc.

People get crazy about the D7000 as if it was the second coming. The D7000 is after all just a Pentax K-7 repackaged with a new sensor (which the K-5 will have) and a Nikon badge on it. That's a bit sad that the K-7 didn't get this much attention 1.5 years ago, just because it was a Pentax. It seems that the only feature it needed to sell well was a Nikon badge on it. My 2˘

On the Canon they seem to be needed as they are not positioned the same way. On the Pentax as some said they are outlined by the marks in the VF. And putting points would be misleading because the AF sensors are NOT points:

It's a K-x killer. If the price is similar, the K-x will have a hard time to sell. So the K-r will probably be the updated K-x with the 14Mp sensor and probably a bunch of goodies thrown in like AF leds.
