Question about properly using Pentax IBIS - has it improved ?

My K-7 reports a lot more info about the SR system than my K-1. It used to list SRResult which told you whether stabilization had been achieved or not, told you how long the shutter half press had been held and the focal length set for SR. That was a great help in getting the best out of the SR system. By contrast all the K-1 returns is whether the system is on or not and the AA simulation status. I don't know if this means that it is now so much faster that it is not worth recording the SR info or the data just got dropped.

Native image resolution of K-3
Posted By steephill

That isn't the native resolution, try dividing the number of pixels by the size of the sensor and you will see that it can't be. The number your are seeing in PSE is simply a suggestion for an output resolution for making a print. It has no impact on most screen viewing applications except maybe in DTP where you want a specific image size in ppi terms. You can change it to any value you want without having any effect on the true resolution of your image. Pentax cameras have used a different default number over the years, 72 and 300 ppi, so it really doesn't matter except for very specific applications.

Photography's Triangle

There is no triangle. The only things that affect exposure are shutter speed and aperture. Increasing ISO amplifies both signal and noise but does not change the sensitivity of the sensor, that is fixed at the base ISO setting.

Got any photos of Shuri Castle, Okinawa, Japan? Then you may be able to help with its reconstruction. I missed the news that it had been destroyed by fire last October (Shuri Castle: Appeal for images to 'rebuild' burned site online - BBC News). This project ??????????????????? | Shuri Castle Digital Reconstruction is building a 3D model and are seeking 1,000,000 images to help make it as detailed as possible.

K-70 OverExposed a lot ISO way high

Try resetting the camera back to default state. Those exposures are just plain wrong and don't fit with the images produced. Try some external daylight shots using the full range of program modes (Av, Tv etc.) with another lens. Your examples all use the same lens so trying another lens will tell you whether it is the lens or body which is faulty.

Does the Pentax DFA 150-450 hold focus and focal length when pointed up or down?

Focal length creeps badly. Set longest focal length, point up and it shortens. Set shortest focal length, point down and it lengthens. Haven't seen any focus change.

Got a new light meter, because I wanted a second opinion.

Meters meaure light level, that is all they do whether they are separate handheld or built in to the camera. Mainly they measure reflected light from the subject but handhelds in particular can measure incident light e.g. Weston with Invercone attachment. They are not pre-biased for positive or reversal film. It is up to the photographer to decide what to do with the information they supply - either let the camera expose according to the auto mode selected or use manual settings.

If you want to routinely overexpose with your ME Super then just lie to it about the film in use - set a lower ISO number. Overexposed negatives are hard to scan and print, they are not automatically better than a properly exposed negative.

Rant: camera prices and quality per format
Posted By steephill

That medium format sensor is 68% bigger than FF not 20%. It is area that counts and costs. Production costs do not scale linearly with sensor size either, larger sensors mean lower wafer use efficiency and the effect of any defect is proportionately greater when you get fewer per wafer to start with. Similar issues affect lenses - optical glass is expensive and the amount used depends on the area of the glass required so again it isn't a linear function. Larger lenses are more difficult to make than small ones so again you have greater cost with any defective lens elements. Larger image circle means more glass and more weight needing stronger lens bodies and mounts and that costs more.

Capitalism is based on pricing at whatever the market will stand so long as that makes a viable profit. It seems to me that Pentax are offering very good value in all market segments.

Rant: camera prices and quality per format

Time will solve your problem. Ever since computers were invented processing power improves and storage capacities get larger and cost less every year. The first memory card I bought was a 1Gb CF microdrive which in today's money was over 600. You would be hard pressed to even find a card that small now and a card with 500 times the storage capacity is a tenth of that price. The cost of my original 6mp *istD + DA16-45 bought in 2004 adjusted for inflation would now buy you a 36mp K1-II + DFA28-105.

So I don't see any bottlenecks associated with digital imaging technology. It sounds to me that the rant is based on wanting a Rolls Royce but only being prepared to pay for a Mini.

Q-S1 questions

I have 2 Qs which were losing time and date on battery switch. I ran each from a mains AC voltage adaptor for a couple of hours to see if that would charge up the internal battery/capacitor and it seems to work. The mains adaptor terminates in a dummy battery and was intended for a Fuji camera which takes an NP50 battery. The cable comes out the wrong side to match the removable plug in the bottom of the Q but it works with the battery door open. I should open the dummy battery up and re-route the wire some day.

K-1 II high ISO failure

Update: Camera repaired and back in use functioning normally at all ISO settings. Work carried out under warranty included repair and recalibration of main circuit board and sensor. Neither the technician nor Ricoh UK had seen this fault before and had to consult Japan so it clearly isn't a common type of failure.

For motorsports I find other factors more important such as making sure my shutter speed is fast enough. I only use single shot mode which is a throwback to my impecunious days with film.

I checked that my 2002 Nikon Coolpix 4500 (4mpix) was still working just last week. It really was a cool camera with the swivelling body and amazing close focus capability. It came with a Nikon branded 16Mb (!) CF card but I still have the 1Gb IBM CF microdrive which cost an arm and a leg at the time (about 300 I think). I got a flash sync cable to be able to use it with an old Metz CT45 we have from film days - that is a ridiculous looking combination.

My 2004 *istD still gets an occasional airing as does my 2009 K-7. In 2004 memory cards were still expensive though so I got a portable CD writer with CF card reader built in to transfer images on to CD every night on holiday trips. Now on a K-1 which has been upgraded to MkII.

Why did pentax give up completly on SLR?

Not sure why you think Pentax were quite late in entering the DSLR market, the *istD was introduced in Feb 2003. Delivery was delayed a few months because of sensor supply problems (Sony preferentially supplying Nikon was the story at the time). Contemporary cameras from Nikon and Canon were the D100 and D60 respectively and the *istD reviewed well against these at the time. Pentax might have been quicker to the market if they hadn't tried to develop the ill-fated MZ-D but dumping that probably saved them as the same full frame sensor killed off Contax.

Although mechanical film cameras will be useable for decades yet will film still be available? The giant companies of the film era are now a mere shadow of their former selves. Kodak and other sold 25 million disc cameras but film was discontinued in 1999. APS went the same way with film extinct by 2011. Who knows how long 35mm and larger will survive?

You can use a tripod mount intended for a range of Canon lenses on the FA*300 f4.5. Look for Tripod Mount Ring A (W) - W means white and there is also a B version which is a different colour.
