Fuel on the fire: Comparing the K-5 and DP2 Merrill

Thanks for the thread. I have a K5, 4 DA Limiteds and the DA 18-135. I don't plan to get a K5II or s. However, the DP1M is on my lust list for times when you would like high res for a large print. Prints are where *I* think the DP would excel. I don't want to try to recall the number of times when 'the light was right' and the K5 was at home. :(

No, you are not confused...but opinions on the internet can be confusing. The K01 is a bargain at the present price but if you can afford only one camera, and there is no stigma to that, get one with a viewfinder. :D

"While when I take K-30 to my hand it instantly feels like it is extension of my own body, K-01 in my hand feels solid but it just makes me question my self and don;t feel as great as with k-30 and k-05"

You answered your own question. A 'bargain' that you are not comfortable with is a waste of money.

I bought one to use with my DA Limiteds and it arrives tomorrow. It's an odd duck but for the $$$ it was a no brainer for me to compliment my K5.

Don't worry about it. Everyone that has an issue posts on the net. There are many 'no problem' users.

Lens: IMHO, get the 18-135 with the K5. You won't regret it. It is a good general purpose lens and more flexible that the 18-55.

Personally, I use the DA 35. The K5 has plenty of room in the ISO department.

How often do you 'need' one inch DOF? ;)

+1 on the 18-135. FWIW, I had the 12-24, bought the DA 15 and subsequently sold the 12-24. Technically, the 12-24 may be better but the DA 15 works for me.

Go for the lighting gear if YOU are not sure about 'needing' a lens. The worst thing you can do, IMHO, is to ask this type of question on an internet forum. ;)

The SDM failed in my 17-70 it was repaired under warranty and sold. I am keeping the 18-135. There is not enough of a difference in image quality to worry about.

I'm not sure it out resolves the 17-70, difference in samples? But it does not have SDM and it is WR.

Nothing against PZ, Klaus has a high benchmark, but the only review that counts is yours. ;)

I sold the 17-70 and am keeping the 18-135. I have noticed metering 'issues' with non-DA lenses too. ;)

It is my favorite and only zoom. :D To expect it to perfom on par with primes at
all focal lengths is unreasonable.

Are you using a genuine Pentax adapter? As far a the best portrait lens....I think lighting is more important than the lens...especially if the subject is a woman. ;)

The SDM failed in my 17-70 too. It was repaired under warranty and sold. I recently got the 18-135 and actually like it. I got a 62 mm Marumi polarizer on flea bay for $42.95. No, it is not razor sharp but it is more than 'good enough'.

+1 on the DC motor longevity...fingers crossed. ;)

I had and sold the 17-70. The 18-135, for me, is a keeper. Being in bayou country
you may find the WR useful.

I just received an 18-135. I was a little hesitant but I think it will be a keeper. Compact, fast focusing, good image quality and it feels balanced on the K5. I am not a pixel peeper. My 4 DA Limiteds are "better' but this is a more than decent all 'rounder.
