Here's a nice brown ale that's not as hoppy and bitter as an IPA. Some of my friends who find my usual choice of beer a little overmuch like this a lot. I enjoy it too. Hi-Wire is an Asheville NC brewery. SMC Takumar 55mm f/2.

I walk over to the next building most days and take a few pictures of Amy's mobile. Today's picture has a weird three-dimensionality due to all the horizontal, vertical and diaganol lines - like the mobile is in a box. I know some people's goal is to render exactly what they see using a camera. Sometimes, mine is just to show the scene to the camera and see what kind of crazy thing it comes up with. The 55 SMC Takumar is especially good at showing me things my eye would never see.

Here's the Governor Edward Hyde of the NC Ferry Division, photographed in 2001 on the Cedar Island - Ocracoke route. The boat is long off the roster and I have never been able to determine its disposition. It was built in 1977 by Halter Equitable of New Orleans and could carry 25 cars and 300 passengers.

The queen of the fleet for over 50 years, USS Enterprise was decommissioned in 2017 and at the time of this photograph, February 2018, rested on a dock in Newport News. Many would like to see her become a permanent monument, but, even with her nuclear powerplant removed, she is probably still too "hot" for preservation.

View from the top of Long Hollow Scenic Overlook Tower near Galena, IL, in 2001. The tower was built by the Illinois DOT in the early 1980s and was closed around 2009 for repairs. To the best of my knowledge it has never reopened. For all I know, it is not there any more. Even when we visited it was more than a little rickety. But the views of the low, rolling hills of northwestern Illinois were superb. My daughter said "You can see the whole world from up here".

Farm truck in suburbia. The owner told me he picked it up for a song a few years back and was working on it in his spare time. Clearly not aiming for a restoration, as evident by the aftermarket wheels. He said he had a Chevy 350 and automatic transmission in it, and I heard the dual exhausts with what sounded like a set of cherry bombs on them. The owner is hoping to get it roadworthy in time for his grandson to drive it to high school in three years. I'd say the young man will have instant cred if he shows up in this old Ford. SMC Takumar 55 f/2.

I got a yard sale Quantaray 28-90 1:3.5-5.6 Macro in a cardboard box with two Pentax lenses and other camera stuff for $45. Every one of the lenses has turned out good, no surprise about the Pentaxes but I hadn't really expected much from the Quantaray. Turns out it's a good piece of glass. The images look just fine and the 28-90 range with macro at 90 makes it a great walking around lens. Here's a shot of a leaf in macro mode, on a K100D body. It's sharp enough for the web, and I can't complain about the bokeh, either.

I'm with you, photolady, and I hope you can prevail. I always enjoy seeing your pictures.

Our HOA made us take in the feeders last year due to a rat infestation in the neighborhood. Personally, I would have put up with the rats, but some people are deathly afraid of them.

Wakes up sick, prepares a soothing elixer, then thinks, "Wait - I see a picture", gets out his camera and takes a picture before quaffing the relieving draft - the man is truly dedicated to his art.

This one from 1977 taken with my Spotmatic 1000 and probably the Tak 105. A friend gazing in wonder, his first sight, from Algiers Point, of the river traffic on the Mississippi. I was pretty blase about it, having spent summers in NO with my grandparents, who lived just next to the Algiers courthouse, a half block from the ferry landing.

Following Fujifilm's path, the new camera will have retro styling and functions that make it look and work like a Spotmatic F. Including a film advance lever...tease...tease...tease. The camera will be badged a Honeywell Ricasahi.

Just another hawk (I'm no expert, but I think it is a juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk) like a thousand other on the internet, but I wanted to post it just to show what this vintage camera/lens combination is capable of. K100D with SMC Pentax-F 80-200mm f/4.7-5.6 at full extension, f/5.6, 1/1000s, ISO 200. Heavily cropped. At the low ISO, even with the cropping and unsharp mask the noise is not too noticeable. Plenty good enough for viewing on a computer screen.

Here's a heavily-cropped shot from today on my K100D with SMC Pentax-F 80-200mm f/4.7-5.6 at full extension, f/8, 1/400s, ISO 200. This combination is such a delight to use, fast focusing and sharp. I just can't get over the quality of images coming out of this little 6mp camera. The histogram on ths one was so good that it just took a touch of post processing, stretching out the range a bit, a little unsharp mask. Are all the Pentaxes this good? I know my old Spotmatic and Takumars were.

The squirrels in our park are wild and you can't get close to them. My best long lens is a Pentax F 80-200 so that's what I use when stalking them. I often use it on a Fujifilm X-T20 body but in truth I get just as many good pictures using my backup K100D. I'm delighted with how well the autofocus works on the old camera. And either I got an especially good example, or the lens is one of the great under-rated optics of the Pentax lineup. This shot taken with K100D, SMC Pentax F 80-200 at 180mm, 1/100s, f/5.6, ISO 200, post-processed in RawTherapee, cropped, Velvia 100 emulation, moderate unsharp mask.

I have taken hundreds of pictures of my neighbor's mobile. In the afternoon, when the sun comes around the building, I will stand on her front porch and take pictures of the light. This one is with my SMC Takumar 55 f/2, wide open at 1/3000 second, ISO 200, on a short extension tube. I adjusted the exposure down by 4 stops in post processing, bumped up the contrast and saturation, and applied heavy unsharp mask. In general I like the camera to obey me and render what the eye sees, but in this case I am happy with fantasy and color. It's not what I saw through the viewfinder, it's what the Takumar saw.

That lens alone was probably worth the cost of the package. Heck of a good deal, I'd say.

The winters in North Carolina are mild enough that, even if it's too cold to sail, it's not too cold to do boat work. And all boats need work. So I have been on my boat for the last week, rebedding fittings, painting and rigging. Now and then we get a nice warm sunny day, and when work is done it is time for a strong, hoppy IPA. This is a Hi-Pitch from Hi-Wire Brewing in Asheville, NC. SMC Takumar 105 f/2.8 at f/4 in the late afternoon sun.

Thanks, jawats, for your kind words. No, I must admit I read "The Magic Mountain" in translation, not once, but several times. In my opinion, it is one of the finest works of literature. I consider it with "Moby Dick" and "Don Quixote" as my three favorites that I go back to time and time again.

My apologies to my Pentax Forums brothers and sisters for getting this far off subject. I promise my next post will be a photograph...

Very good, I'm glad that is still available on the web. For any readers who haven't seen it, fascinating document that's worth consulting any time one runs across an old, obscure lens. I hope you will post some pictures with it.

As soon as I saw the mention of "Pluracoat", I remembered Monoghan's reference to it. The word is stuck in my head because it is so similar to Thomas Wolfe's gruesome description of the "pleurashock" in his book "The Magic Mountain".

Yes, it's that Neuse River, and my Pentax Forums name is a reference to my website, neuseriversailors.com.
