file sizes with 645Z

TIFFs are only useful as an output format. Shoot DNGs. They are losslessly compressed so file size will always vary. Stick to LR5 (soon 6) and PS for post.

Scanned files are massive, but often don't actually yield that much real data. Beware creating useless monsters.

LOVE! that first image. You can only freeze snow like that at high ISOs, but that image looks beautifully clean. Great shot.

LV involves the shutter firing twice, in succession, so that presumably adds to vibe-risk. MLI and IR remote with a delay is the best. The shutter opening still causes real vibration issues at the at-risk shutter speeds, sadly. Electronic First Curtain Shutter would be the greatest gift...

Use whatever turns you on. If you're interesting in photography as a science experiment, there are endless possibilities for amusement and experimentation, just as there were abundant obscure specialty developers in the film era. But pointing people who are primarily interested in the photography aspect of photography towards fringe/speciality developing software won't help them enjoy their time spent on their hobby.

Professionals, on the other hand, standardize on professional workflows for a reason. And I am certain that a professional post-processor using the mainstream tools will generate a better finished file or print every time than someone spending their afternoon trying to get their toaster to run on LINUX. :-)

Free software, like free cars and free cameras, are worth about what you pay for them.

Yes, you can still buy LR5 (and likely LR6 within a few weeks) on a perpetual license. If you google (which is still free!) the issue, you can find it on Adobe's site, though they make it very hard to find, deliberately. Or, you can just order a copy from B&H or other resellers.

The $10/month plan gets you BOTH LR and Photoshop, so it's not a horrendous ripoff. I hate the subscription model, but the price works out not too much differently than an upgrade every 18 months, if you consider you have PS thrown in.

You Yanks should be all over the low Canadian dollar! The best camerastore in Canada is The Camerastore in Calgary, bar none. Their Youtube channel is hilarious and they will take care of you well.

Pentax Canada also has the best rep in the business (Bill Gouge) and very nice folks at head office.

I know of at least one chap in NY who bought through TCS and was very happy.

Great news that the transfer speed is up! That's *all* that matters, since I think 99% of serious working pros will run this into LR anyway.

645D/Z File Handling

You won't find your laptop problematic for LR. For PS, likely yes. I find I shoot less on the 645z than with 35mm, so total gigabyte consumption has stayed steady. I have double-redundant 4TB storage. Should last me another year or two.

USB3.0 or Thunderbolt aren't really optional at this level, imho. USB2 is so 2005.

As for cards, big fast 64GB ones. I like the Transcend 600x ones. (Red). Dirt cheap now.

Colin just mailed out an updated set of profiles, which I assume he's sent to all those who've download the 645z set.

I was quite happy with the version "55" Huelight profiles and the new ones are I'm sure even better. Worth a look if you're a "z" user and not thrilled with Adobe's offerings.

His site is colorfidelity.com for those who are interested.

Cheers,

The FA-120 macro is an excellent lens. AF is valuable for portraiture, so I would go with that. Get the nicest copy you can find used out of Japan.

New Leaf Shutter lenses for 645Z?
Posted By ndevlin

Modern leaf shutters are electronic. The mechanical ones in the A-series 645 lenses are ancient. If they can source the shutters, Pentax can build LS lenses for the 645 system.

I'm glad you like the 90mm. Personally, I thought the size made it useless to me. The 120mm is superb. It's not a lens for wide open, and I've found every copy to be excellent (in particular for the price). I'm sure the 90mm is better, but not in a way I think I would ever see. IS is nice, but at almost any shutter speed where it matters, shutter vibration will also be a possible issue. It extends usability somewhat, but if we're talking about marginal gains in sharpness, handholding will erase those plenty fast. That's why this lens was always a head-scratcher to me. Ditto the 25mm, which was cool (I am told sharp copies existed - a fact I'll take on faith, since both that i used were disappointing).

I really wish I could sit down with Pentax and have a little chat about their development direction....

New Leaf Shutter lenses for 645Z?

Both 645 MF LS lenses work well and are razor sharp. The manual focus and re-cocking is irritating, thought the later becomes second nature. I mostly miss the AF.

A new series of LS would sell very well, I think. At least as well as the insanely large 90mm Macro, which I thought was a completely unnecessary lens.

645Z tethering - Tablet support in new firmware + Image transmitter 2???

I don't see why you couldn't tether to a Surface 'tablet' if it is running Windows 8 and have a USB3 port. (Other than the fact that you'd be running Windows 8, and thus have far greater problems in your life than tethering your camera ;-)

Banding & strange colour shifts in sky highlights?

Thanks for making that file available Rob. I can see exactly what you mean, with a strange magenta-ish arc developing in the sky when the exposure is lowered in the blue channel. Everything about this behavior looks like a clipped channel, despite the histogram displaying as within gamut for the relevant parts of the image. I have experienced nothing of the sort in almost 9,000 frames, including pretty heavy post-processing of sky-tones, so I wonder whether this isn't an issue somehow specific to your camera.

I think the only way you can isolate the problem is to shoot a scene side-by-side with two cameras, and/or do a decreasing exposure ramp on images of this sort as a test to see if a reduced exposure solves the problem.

Strange and perplexing indeed.

Good luck and let us know what comes of this. And sorry I can't offer more help.

No. That's how it's done. The only tiffs i ever have are generally ones that come back from my retoucher. LR has a decent print engine. No reason to save as some other file format and print from elsewhere.

When I output jpegs, I rarely save them. I just save a snapshot at the time of the final export settings, which I label as "website jpeg export" or some such. Snapshots in LR are a super useful tool, because it allows you to functionally "save" a particular version of the processing without creating files or taking up space.

Re: handheld shooting. Sure, because sometimes absolute sharpness isn't the be-all and end-all of photography. However, to maximize resolution it's 1/3x focal length.

Pentax 645D vs 645Z

Somewhere in this thread someone seemed to be basing these comparisons on Jpegs from the camera. This is meaningless. It's the same as taking two rolls of different films to two different one-hour photo labs and pronouncing one camera better than the other because of the result.

More 'pop' in the "D" files likely speaks to a lower DR in the file, if we're talking about native files. The "Z" files will appear flatter because the white and black clipping points are further out, causing the data between to look compressed when initially displayed. An unprocessed file is again very meaningless.

I know a number of serious people who really like the look of CCD images at their base ISO over most CMOS cameras under similar conditions. That's fine. That's also a matter of taste. And, when professional post-processing is applied, it usually is not a thing at all.
