For localised editing using layers and advanced features, C1. I believe Cfix works well every time in converting.

Many thanks. It's all about the characters. The 645z and the lens set are a joy to use and reflect on the results. My experience is unfortunately limited to digital files. I'm hoping one day to see the results of printing to a decent size and with a new high quality process. Not cheap but it could be amazing. Carbon Transfer Print | The Wet Print

Here's a new gallery of portraits taken with the 645 and all with the FA 150mm at f2.8 in ambient outside light using an interior room as a clean backdrop. Focus was adjusted manually through the viewfinder with minimal processing in C1.

A couple of points spring to mind. Do correct me if I'm wrong. Does the AA-82 Microprism not have a central circle that splits. How would that work if your subject's eyes are not in the centre? Also it's very much miss if you attempt to get sharp images on the eyes with a wide open aperture by just using the viewfinder and standard screen.

I can only speak for working with the 645Z. It's very difficult even using live view and magnification as the subject can often slight shift their position. Working at f2.8 on the 75mm gives a DOF of about 1cm so focus is critical and not possible without the live view, etc. When I have tried to focus through the viewfinder, the results have been poor. I think one option is to stop down to about f10 which gives you about 4cm DOF. This also allows for both eyes to be sharp if the subject is turned slightly. Of course the background will come into play more so you would need to think about that. The link below has been useful.

Thanks for the feedback much appreciated. My aim for the project was to produce a series that has a consistent way of seeing and one that is based on simplifying each scene amidst the chaos whilst shooting for structure, balance, harmony and texture. There is also a wonderful quality of light there which I have tried to reproduce. I agree some compositions do seem more sedate than others and in a highlights gallery of lifetime river shots wouldn't make the cut. The editing process can often be about being faithful to intention and not just keeping the more dramatic images. This can always be a struggle and is ongoing. No doubt to be revisited with an edit down the line.

Many thanks to all. If you wish to see new images then click on Switzerland from the portfolio pull down menu. Of the 20 or so 3 were taken with the 35, the rest split about evenly between the 75 and 150 all from the recent lens range for the 645z. All used a polariser with ND's on some. With regards to the topic of diffraction, I find stopping down to one stop less than fully closed with the camera diffraction set to on works well enough when used with a certain software that has a diffraction correction feature. In effect I think the images have some small amount of degradation but it's not too noticeable at 100% view. Fully stopping down has quite a negative impact even with the pull back features.

the 25mm lens

I have the 25mm. It's not a lens I've used a lot mainly down to my style of photography. I find the filter system is fine for a polar and indeed I've been advised the Format Hitech largest filter system works well on it although not a cheap option. For me handling is secure, it feels robust and gives a great angle of view, I just need more subjects for it.

I use the live view with zoom to shoot portraits. It slows me down a little but without it there's no way of focusing accuracy on the pupils. Will try the FP, thanks for the tip.

After 18 months of using the camera I've put together a website available to view. The camera has been a joy to use. The lenses employed include: DFA 25, DFA35, 55, 75, 150 and 300A. If you have any questions just let me know.

'With no shake reduction, it's harder to shoot on the fly, you need a tripod for everything...set up times are ridiculous.'

It is harder but it can be done. I crank up the shutter speed and ISO if necessary to 3200max and the only drawback is buffer times. Attached a gallery of dancers/singers in low light.

Pentax 645 75FA vs D-FA 55mm Lens

I have both and quality wise both stand-up. It depends on what you shoot. I use the 75mm more as I currently shoot more portraits. The angle of view for the 55 is a great subtle wide which is more a standard lens but I think it will probably get less of a workout then other lenses in your kitbag. You can see the 75mm in action here: https://essaouiraimages.viewbook.com/album/nomadf

Do budget for customs and duty. The seller I deal with also won't understate the price on the invoice for insurance purposes. Still a great way to buy glass.

645Z + FA 645 55mm: Sharpest f-stop at f8 or stop down? Hyperfocal issues....

Interesting thread. For what it's worth with my 645z set to diffraction control I shoot at the second smallest aperture without worrying about quality loss. At the smallest on most of my lenses I notice a slight tailing of sharpness at 100% viewing. To maximise DOF when using teles I either focus manually on the most obvious subject to the eye or the main bulk of the scene as I see fit and then view on the back of the camera to assess if the DOF extends to the points I want. When using wider angle lenses I'll focus on a pojnt about a third into the scene. I did use the DOF markings on the lenses but found them to be misleading and not producing satisfactory results. I use a FDA25, 35, 55, 75, 150 and 300 A.

Very kind. I used a FA 150mm for these which I find get the most work out followed by the 55mm. Hopefully more dunes to follow in the next couple of weeks or so as I head south.

Hi all

I'm a Moroccan based photographer and tour leader with a recently purchased 645z. Since joining the forum in June I've been busy working through the 645z and running tours in Morocco but now I can finally show at least a sample of landscape images from Morocco taken since the summer. I tend to work in a more abstract way and rely on image definition to achieve results in some cases. https://essaouiraimages.viewbook.com/darren-lewey
