SUper Bowl Week in Indianapolis!
Lucky enough to have great weather for this time of the year. I went to the Super Bowl Village 3 times, today with my K5. I only saw one Pentax (a red kx/kr), one Leica (M9 I believe) and the usual arrangement of Canon/Nikons.
If interested to get an idea of what things looked like check Super Bowl Week - a set on Flickr

Rearranging my photo gear just in time for Black Friday:) - up for sale are:

Pentax k-x (black) with 2-lens kit (18-55 and 50-200) - $450 shipped. Excellent condition, around 5K clicks, both lenses in excellent condition as they were hardly used. Box and documents etc included. There is one dust particle in the viewfinder (not the sensor) that I have not been able to clean, but obviously it doesn't interfere with the pictures as it is only in the viewfinder.

Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 for Pentax - the older version - $325 shipped. I am not the original owner, but have all documentation, box, hood etc. Excellent condition, one of my favorite lenses! Great color rendition, macro capabilities, very versatile range. Selling half-heartedly, would not be sad if it didn't sell!

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 - $375 shipped. It needs no introduction, an excellent lens, I sent back 3 copies but finally got a perfect one. Used very sparingly, it is in mint condition. All accessories included - I can also provide the original receipt for warranty purposes.

Pentax FA 50 f/1.4 - $280 shipped. Excellent condition, not the original owner, has both caps and a Hoya UV filter but no box.

Please feel free to PM with any questions

3rd time the charm?

It's been at least 10 months since I last tried the k5 ( second body in a row) before I switched to the D 7000. I was itching to try again with a K5 and with the generous return policy from amazon I pulled the trigger again on a used one. First observations:
Anticipation thrill was high!
Shutter count was 0! Firmware 1.01. Not sure of the serial. I did not check for spots on the sensor.
Put the DA 70 on, great to have in body SR with these pretty primes! That's one thing I am not crazy about the Nikon, probably anything over 50mm needs VR and only a few lenses have it.
Ergonomics are great, nice little things such as saving tha last picture as RAW if needed.
AF - ah, the big thing. No major FF issues but a little hesitant. I took the same indoor pics with both, the K5 needs work to get it tack sharp and it may not always be possible. The D7000 is, well, effortless ...outdoors with good light the K5 does very well.
I really wonder whether the lenses make all the difference in AF. All my Pentax lenses are screw-driven while only a couple of Nikon are. I have an order for the 18-135 and I am curious to see
So, obviously some redundancy here ( a lot) but I may keep the K5 in the end and sell my Kx. Perhaps the k5 and 18-135 would be a single lens travel camera and the Nikon stuff more for indoors low-light pics with my kids. If I needed to keep one system only, at this point it would likely still be the Nikon.

I (still) have a Kx and tried both K5 and D7000. I kept the Nikon. I havent tried the D300s but reviews mention an even better AF system. If and when the D400 comes out (Thailand flood!) I may give it a try

Nikon D7000 as compared to Pentax K5

Splitting hairs. Tried them both, both are great. Kept the d7000, may replace my Kx with a k5 when prices drop (or perhaps wait for a pentax mirror less!). I liked the AF options and accuracy a little better on the Nikon. It has it's quirks too. As many have said, lenses are more important - what you have or what you think you may need.

The forthcoming Pentax Mirrorless Camera

If pentax makes a mirrorless camera with a bigger sensor and K mount, how will that compare with the K5? For people upgrading from lower models (kx) it may be tempting to go straight to a mirrorless if the same lenses can be used

K5 AF using different lenses.

One very customer-friendly shop for sure! Before my K5 went back only the 70mm limited focused right, the 21mm slightly less so. The d7000 with the kit lens is spot on. I am thinking of buying the 17-50 sigma OS on Nikon mount, so Please give us an update.

Nikon D7000 trumps Pentax K-5....

I think that can all be done with the d7000 after getting familiar with the position of the buttons etc. Having said that, I think spot on focus is better for me than not getting my eye off the viewfinder

I would echo the previous comment comparing kx and d7000 in terms of focus. I also tried the K5 for a month or so, IMO only a small AF improvement from kx. Not sure how anyone could claim d7000 is not a serious camera based on buttons!
When k5 goes under $900-1000 I will probably buy one, until then on with the Nikon system.

Stains on K-x Sensor?

My K-x is now about 10 months old. I have never really thought to check for stains like those seen with the K-5, but after looking at some recent vacation pictures at small apertures (f/14) I am very very concerned! I attached a picture below. The stains/spots disappear at larger apertures. I will do more formal tests with different lenses etc later.
Any input/feedback would be appreciated

Quite a few people have mentioned using more than one systems at the same time. There are advantages to all systems and it is certainly imPortant to try them all, if possible. I thought keeping the kx to use with limiteds or when traveling and getting a D7000 for other uses, perhaPs when fast AF is more important made sense to me. Maybe when the K5 price drops under $1000 I will get one to rePlace my kx.

K-5 AF trouble catch-all

Customers usually vote with their feet (or money), meaning they take their money elsewhere if not happy. That's the only thing businesses understand.
Pentax will likely incorporate the findings/solution in the K3 (or whatever it will be called).

Relevant news re malfunctioning AF under artificial light

A quick question about live view. During the FF tests, has anyone noticed changes in exposure (or changes in shutter speed) between VF and LV shots of the same subject under same conditions? When I tried a K5 over the holidays I remember the LV shots had slightly different exposure (brighter). When I test the d7000 the LV shots have faster shutter speed by about a stop and thus less blur. It still seems to be in focus but the LV shots are sharper. I wonder if something similar happens with the K5.

D7000 l
aF assist light seems intrusive to me as well, but it can be turned off. It seemed to focus well without it (within reason)

Why did I order the D7000. Why?

I tested it under the same settings - in terms of lighting - that I had tested the K5. The K5 missed focus, got it better on LV, AF assist light never came on. The D7000 got it right both with and without the AF assist lamp. Not a fancy pic, my bookcase under a nearby desk lamp, but convincing for me. I only have the kit lens (18-105) for the Nikon, so I am not sure how it would behave with a faster lens. I have not tried video yet to check for the hot pixels.
For me accurate AF is important (I am not a professional but inaccurate AF is frustrating). I still like my Kx very much, but wanted to upgrade to the next level. I liked the additional features of the K5 I tried and I am still used to the Pentax interface.
I have purchased several lenses (close to 10) for K-mount, including some limiteds since I was fully expecting to upgrade to K5. In retrospect this was a severe case of LBA and not a very rational decision. I dont see myself ever going for a FF system.

I am smitten. The AF is so quiet, at first I thought it wasn't working. Unfortunately, I only have the kit lens. Still, where my K5 front focused ( but not on LV) the D7000 is spot on. The AF aside light is intrusive but even after I turned it off, focus is great. Based on my experience of one K5 body, the D7000 is, unfortunately much better.
I say unfortunately, because I really wanted the K5 to work and be great. I have several lenses for my Kx, and it would certainly be more convenient, let alone cheaper to stay with one system. So what would people do, sell pentax gear or keep it in hope of a future recovery?
