I think it's a shame that Ricoh didn't just simply buy Pentax Forums for their own. Or, perhaps if they simply took the money they invested in their own forum and instead invested it in Pentax Forums, that would have been a win-win for all.

Pentax Forums has served me well ... I'm staying put right here.

I just wanted to close the loop on this thread. Thanks to all for the advice. I found these settings worked best for me for a daylight soccer game:

* multi-segment metering
* switched to AF.S (from AF.C originally)
* AF active area of Auto 27 AF Points
* TAV mode (with ISO range of 100-3200)
* JPG
* #15 AF.S Setting = 1
* #18 AF Status = 3 (medium)
* SR = on
* AF Button - AF1 Enable (meaning not using the AF back button)
* Shutter 1/800
* Aperature 5.0

If you want to see the shots from the latest game, go here: Womens PSU GA vs Point Park - original photography by data blueprints

Thanks again for all the advice.

Continuous Shooting Issue

First, let me thank all of you for the advice. I spent the last week shooting more soccer games and experimenting with all of the suggestions offered here in this thread.

Long story short (and maybe some of you can explain why this worked), the continuous shooting issue disappeared.

Some of you thought that the aperture on the lens was slow to respond, but I put the lens on the K-7, and the continuous shooting issue did not surface on the K-7 (but remained on the K-3). Note that I updated the firmware on the K-3, but that did not solve the continuous shooting issue.

So, I did a factory reset of the K-3, put this same lens back on the K-3, and I used only these setting changes:

* multi-segment metering
* switched to AF.S (from AF.C originally)
* AF active area of Auto 27 AF Points
* TAV mode (with ISO range of 100-3200)
* JPG
* #15 AF.S Setting = 1
* #18 AF Status = 3 (medium)
* SR = on
* AF Button - AF1 Enable (meaning not using the AF back button)
* Shutter 1/800
* Aperature 5.0

The photos from yesterday's shoot were great .... crisp, clear .... and most importantly, the sequence bursts were all consistent in terms of exposure.

I have attached a sequence of 3 un-edited photos from a burst.

Also, if you want to see the entire edited shoot: Womens PSU GA vs Point Park - original photography by data blueprints

I took about 300 shots, and 100 were keepers, so that's a pretty good ratio.

Thanks again to all who helped .... I'm still not sure why this worked, so if you want to comment on that, please do.

Lens Recommendation for a Night Stadium Group Shot

I probably should have started this thread by telling everyone what lenses I already own.

I have these lenses already: Pentax 35mm f/2.4, Pentax 50mm f/1.8, Pentax 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3, Pentax 18-55mm kit lens, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, Sigma 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6

To be honest, in addition to this low-light group shot, I had been shopping for a nice short range, wide angle, "walkin' around" lens anyway, so depending on the feedback in this thread, I thought maybe I'd kill two birds with one stone.

Is the angle of view on that lens wide enough to capture 12 people wide, and is it capable of a depth of field to handle three rows of people deep (at f1.4)?

I need a lens recommendation. Whatever lens you help me choose, I'll probably try to rent the lens for a few days before buying.

I have a shoot coming up in October. It takes place at halftime, in a well-lighted stadium, at night. I will be shooting a group of people who will be positioned approximately 12 people wide and 3 rows deep .... 26 people total. I'll be using a K-3. I'll only have 20 minutes to get this right.

I need to make sure that the people on the ends are just as in-focus as the people in the middle. I also would prefer to minimize the grain. And, if I can help it, I'd prefer not to use a flash (but am open to that).

So, I'm looking for a lens that is perfect for this situation, but also I'm looking for any tips in setting up this shot.

Thanks in advance.

I pulled the lever, and the aperature opens and closes easily. I don't see an obstruction, at least not an obvious one. However I will try your experiment with M-mode and report back. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick tutorial on the lever. The aperature blades seem to snap back at a respectable speed.

The lens is a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM .... as you noted, it was set to 7.1 for all three photos in the sequence.

I'm not sure how to check the lens to see if the aperture is stuck for a moment. With an HSM lens, all of the mechanics are inside the lens, so you don't see anything move, correct? Can you provide more guidance on checking to see if the aperature is stuck?

I have used this lens for years now only quite recently with a K-7, and I don't have this issue with that camera body.

Is there a setting that will lock the aperature during a continuous burst?

thanks for replying.

Here are three photos from one continuous shot. The first as you can see is acceptable in terms of color and exposure and white balance, but the two that follow are not. These are JPGs straight out of the camera (large files) ... no post-processing.

Here are three thumbmails that demonstrate the issue.

---------- Post added 09-17-2014 at 06:41 AM ----------

The three photos I submitted have an ISO of 640. Here are some thumbnails of demonstrating the issue.

For some reason I can't seem to post the three thumbnails, so here is a link to them:

At 8 FPS, the scene isn't changing much over the course of one continuous burst. And I am shooting using TAV mode. But I will try switching to spot metering and see if that helps. Thanks.

---------- Post added 09-17-2014 at 05:59 AM ----------

I actually started out with daylight selected for white balance and wasn't liking the result, so I switched to Auto.

---------- Post added 09-17-2014 at 06:00 AM ----------

I will post some examples here in a bit. Thanks.

I have had no issues with mirror flop.

Continuous Shooting Issue

I've been having some relatively good success shooting soccer games with my k3, except for one issue. When shooting continuous, although all photos in each sequence are in focus, and although the first photo is properly exposed, the other shots in the burst sequence appear over-exposed. If not over-exposed, then perhaps the white balance is wrong.

Regardless, the first photo in the sequence is usually sharp and properly exposed, and the remainder of the sequence is sharp but far too bright.

I have taken the AF off of the shutter button and I'm using the AF back button. My metering is Multi-segment, and my white balance is Auto.

I have tried setting Continuous to "medium speed" thinking that would give the processor more time to recover, but that doesn't help.

Any ideas!

I'm expecting tomorrow to be a bit overcast, so I don't think the sun will play a big role with shadows. I think the field will be rather evenly lit. I would probably prefer to lock the ISO at maybe 200. Just can't predict until I get there.

I was under the impression that RAW slows down your continuous shooting, and that you can only get 8 fps by shooting jpg. Correct?

Just received my new K-3. I'm going to test drive it tomorrow shooting a college soccer game in the daylight. I'll be standing only 12 feet from the edge of the field as I walk around the field.

This is my third Pentax body (ie. K100D, K-x, K-7), and I've been shooting soccer games for years, so I'm not new to this.

But I thought I'd list my settings for the game and see if anyone had any suggestions for improvements.

I'm going to use a Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 Macros HSM lens.

Because it's a day game, and because I'd like to freeze the action as much as possible, here are my settings:

* ISO 100-800
* Shutter 1/500 to 1/2000 depending on the brightness
* Aperture f/7.1
* White Balance automatic
* shooting jpg not raw
* set camera on TAV
* AF.C
* AF Active Area: spot
* Shake Reduction: on
* Continuous Shooting: high
* center-weighted metering

All other settings are pretty much standard factory settings.

Am I missing anything or got anything wrong?

Thanks.
