Indeed, D-FA 100mm WR Macro does not have an aperture ring. Though I have other lenses that do, but still would prefer to be able to control aperture from the camera body and have the value used be in the EXIF of the shots...

I asked about this a while ago and the best workaround suggested was to use TAv mode and severely restrict the ISO range. Been using that ever since.

I almost definitely will get this lens! It looks optically superb, and with aperture coupling and infinity to 2:1 really hits the sweet spot for me. It will actually probably open up my photography to more "telephoto" shots rather than strictly macro, since it will be much easier to shoot low magnification shots. (My usual setup is D-FA 100mm WR plus Raynox DCR-250 and that "bottoms out" at 0.8:1, so I need to remove the Raynox to shoot "non-macro", and usually I just don't bother.)

Possibly my buying this depends on the K-New specs/pricing/availability date...

Sorry for the late response - I haven't been coming here much as I also haven't been shooting much all summer. Pandemic and other personal reasons. Kind of feeling I've "plateau-ed" on my three main "stoke" fronts: finding new species just gets harder and harder, my shots aren't getting that much better, and even my level of "gear enjoyment" is dropping. Frankly, the K-3 feels pretty old by now. But this lens and the K-New (if/when it ever comes) may be just what the doctor ordered...

A combination of factors - both the pandemic and other stuff - has meant that I've pretty much not gone out to shoot for the whole summer... But last week I had a few moments and managed to find this ladybug who was (I believe) feeding on aphids. It even has wax-like "goo" on its face which is probably the aphid's defensive fluid! Didn't seem too effective against the ladybug... (D-FA 100mm WR, Raynox DCR-250, Godox AD-180, two-shot focus stack, reposted from Show Me Your Insects.)

In this video (at that very end) Shahan says of the 100mm 2X Macro that "it comes in a wide variety of mounts, with the Canon, Nikon and upcoming Pentax versions having aperture coupling"... His shots continue to amaze as well. Still no date, AFAICT.

Budget macro lens advice

On the macro front, there's already lots of good advice in this thread. A few additional details to remember:
  1. Diopters (e.g. Raynox) work better on longer focal lengths (>=90mm). A Raynox DCR-150 or 250 on your 135mm lens should give you pretty good to excellent results.

  2. Extension tubes work better on shorter focal lengths (<90mm). Not talking about image quality here, just that you need to add more extension to a longer lens to bring the magnification up.

  3. If cheap means sub-$100, then I think a Pentax-M 50mm F/4 Macro (a 1:2 macro by itself) is, IMHO, a really good, light, cheap way into (manual) macro photography. It was my first macro lens, and it should be fine for flowers and some larger critters. Add some extension to get to 1:1 (you don't need that much).

  4. Be aware that if you like shooting macro, you almost certainly will eventually want a 1:1 native macro lens. And if you ever want to shoot critters instead of flowers, then 90-105mm is a nice sweetspot focal length. Most any 1:1 macro with A contacts in that focal length range should be a very good to optically excellent lens. AF is a bonus, IMHO.

  5. If you ever want to get into higher reproduction ratios (1:1 or greater), you should probably start thinking about a flash too.

Finally, I note that you talk about subject isolation in a way that makes me suspect you might really be talking about flower "portraits" rather than macro proper. Meaning that what you're after is bokeh rather than high reproduction ratio. If that is the case, you might be better off with a faster, more portrait-y lens known for good/interesting bokeh. Most 90-105mm macros would do reasonably well at that, but bokeh is a very subjective thing, and you might also want to look at some old Russian lenses for example, but that's something I'll leave others to discuss...

K-New: still kickin'...

See, the thing is, you don't need to take it personally! If someone attacks Ricoh/Pentax, it's not a personal affront to you or me. Someone comes in here complaining about Pentax AF. Do I feel slighted? Nope. My K-3 doesn't even blush. Heck, even my K-01 doesn't actually care. Someone comes in here complaining about the pace of development of Pentax bodies. Well, I feel their pain, actually. Perhaps you don't. That's not a reason to insult their intelligence, or suggest they just go away, IMHO.

I find some irony in that last statement...

Yes, that's certainly true. You called it "pushback" elsewhere I think? I can certainly understand it, and it's often totally warranted. But there's pushback and then there's pushback. My beef is with those (and only those) that resort to (sometimes clever, but always tiresome) personal insult. There's often responses to criticism here on PF that I find frankly quite a bit more grating than the original criticism...

To me, the crowd that takes great offense as soon as any criticism is made of The Brand and start calling the personal integrity of a poster into question by asking him to purchase more gear (or just plain insulting their intelligence), well, that crowd makes PF - this place - a much less fun place to hang out in. The aggressivity, the defensiveness, it's just all pretty tiresome. Maybe some trolls actually enjoy triggering that. Maybe those who indulge in that behavior enjoy the sadistic aspect of it. I dunno. But from where I'm sitting, it all makes this forum seem much less friendly and less fun, and I'm not convinced that those flocking to defend the "honor" of their camera system in that way are actually doing it or this place much good.

Still hoping for some details on the K-New some time soon, BTW...

So we finally had some nice weather and I had some time to explore the backyard. I was reminded that this macro thing ain't exactly easy, but a couple of hours later, I did at least have this. (D-FA 100mm WR plus Raynox DCR-250, X-Posted to Show Me Your Insects)

Definitely. For me, I'd much rather have aperture coupling than infinity focus, for example. But everyone has their own set of priorities. If I could have the perfect macro lens, for me that would be a lens that gives me 1:3 to 3:1 - like I said, I don't really need infinity focus - with aperture coupling, weather sealed and not too heavy (F/4 better than F/2.8, for example), with decent but not too much working distance. (Working distance is a trade-off between less chance of spooking critters versus needing more flash power.) So, maybe something like a 100mm F/4, l33t macro. ;)

Currently, my solution is to walk around with the D-FA 100mm WR with Raynox DCR-250 pre-mounted. That gives me 0.8:1 to 2:1 with aperture coupling, and I've been pretty happy with that (on APS-C). I carry the HD DA 1.4X tele-converter in case I need more magnification. I do sometimes use it, but it's a pain to put on and you might loose sight of the critter while doing it. On the other end of the spectrum, if I spot a non-macro shot, I usually just... don't shoot it.

Alright, that's a pretty good source... :o I'd still like to see an official announcement to know a bit more (date, and especially will it have aperture coupling).

Yes, I share your concern. The K-New seems to be on the horizon, but it's really taking its sweet time. Still, a reasonably priced 2:1 100mm with aperture coupling? I'm there!

Yes, I am aware of the 60mm, but like sclulptor666, I much prefer shooting with a lens that has aperture coupling. Otherwise, IMHO, you might as well be shooting reversed lenses.

Well, ah, OK... The lens won an award. On the award page you linked to they state: "The lens comes with 5 different mounts for use on both DSLR and mirrorless cameras." On Laowa's own page for the lens, these mounts are listed as: Canon EF, Nikon AI, Sony FE, Nikon Z, Canon R. That's indeed five mounts, and doesn't include K-mount. So this hardly seems to confirm your statement that they've decided to produce a K-mount version. Note that I want to believe here - I just don't see how this confirms anything.

Availability of this lens in K-mount would be awesome! Any public statement?

Almost certainly a buy for me as well if it has auto-aperture - either at the "A" level (full control from the body) or even just the "M" level (control on the lens, but focus wide-open and auto-closing of the iris when firing).
