Gift from a member/friend. Already tuned to KMOX AM1120 50,000W Clear Channel for St. Louis Cardinals baseball. As the giver noted, there’s nothing quite like a summer evening laying in a hammock on a screened porch, cold one on the table, ceiling fan on Low, listening to Major League Baseball.

This is the zenith of monaural radios - geared tuner, signal strength indicator, full set of outputs and inputs and absolutely fabulous sound. This is the older legacy pre-iPhone analog model - much preferred!

Downtown St. Louis from 13th St. Eastbound over Old Courthouse through / to Gateway Arch, multiple landscape / architecture possibilities. Pre-sunrise over horizon across Mississippi River, especially if weather favors light cloudiness in morning. There’s a brief period of color bands from deep blue to orange red.

Other potential locations for interesting light include Missouri Botanical Garden, Forest Park, Washington University Campus, Clayton cityscapes and multiple river scenic on the east, north and south of the city proper.

Unfortunately the elevation of St. Louis is from about 550’ - about 750’ above sea level, so it is essentially flat and covered with trees that obscure views. There are of course hundreds of little spots but a large dramatic area is less common (see above). You need a hotel with a balcony to get any elevation (Chase, Ritz Carlton). Everything else is private, parks or forest walks.

St. Louis had its economic peak in 1904 - so it is an old, tired industrial landscape - maybe something there for you.

What are the chances that the DA* 11-18mm will be FF compatible?
Posted By monochrome

The APSc format equivalent of the FF Holy Trinity ZOOM set, at the * level design and build standard. The 11~18 must be taken in that context, not as a single lens.

DA*11~18/2.8
DA*16~50/2.8
DA*50~135/2.8

I suppose the open question is, what are their plans for APSc, and do those plans* warrant release of a * UWA zoom lens?

* Will they redesign and re-release the 16~50 and 50~135 (Centenary Celebration)? Will they actually release an APSc camera worthy of * zooms? Etc.

Yay! Ricoh Imaging will announce a new camera this month or next month! (Nokishita)

The two salient points are
  1. Pentax isn’t going out of business

  2. Development is toward K-Mount SLR

Everything else is details, made speculative by his usage (or lack) of punctuation marks. Addition of a simple comma* would entirely clarify his remarks - and entirely defeat the viral marketing.

FWIW, when I first read asahiman’s post last month my interpretation was:
  • Announcing a major new premium camera technology architecture FF body for 2019, with significant upgrades and a new direction, to complement K-1ll

  • I think APSc is the platform for ‘interesting’ cameras like KP. I like mine.

  • Announcing many new FF lenses in * Class and Limited Class. I don’t consider f/4 or variable aperture zooms a ‘Class’ of lenses.

  • Releasing HD DA*11~18 Zoom in spring 2019

* Inquiring minds want to know where placed. I’ll leave that to the continuing discussion. :D

I offer another take.

It isn’t a contest. They want to sell stuff. Actually, we want them to sell stuff too. I say, good for them!!

Maybe it is the first step in building a ‘Pentax is Cool’ identity group such as BMW did with the Mini car. Regular people driving their everyday Mini’s at fun events, incidentally filmed for Mini promotions. They’re always smiling. They feature old Mini Coopers in their ads ONLY as the heritage the cool new cars draw on - but - they only show people driving current cars. They also feature highly dressed models, not low-end consumer cars in the promotional part of the advertisements. Mini owners often wave at each other in traffic. It’s aCult!! :D

AFA the speculative dark impulse of Pentax negative intentions and advantage taking . . .
  1. There is no flagship APSc camera in the current catalog, but KP is included, and K-70. 645z isn’t represented. Why not! Maybe they’re going to replace it !!! Infamy! Evil Hocir! Bad Hocir!

  2. All the lenses currently on the list are core lenses that Ricoh might intend to continue offering in the catalog. Lenses not on the list could be on a replacement / termination / upgrade schedule. That might be hard to imagine for the D FA28~105, DA*200/2.8 and DA*300/2.8 unless they would be planned for replacement with - say - GOOD lenses like a D FA24~105, D FA*200/2.8 and D FA*300/2.8. Obviously Ricoh is some kind of horrible profit seeking corporate sty on the backs of the world’s gentle photographers. Infamy!! Evil Hocir! Bad Hocir!

The above is of course WAS, but it is one alternate take.

Don’t measure the prism height. Measure the shoulder height. KP shoulders are lower and the body away from the mirrorbox is thinner.

I finally caved and bought a Japan K1000 and brown K1000SE in the used case at my local dealer (Pentax used gear is just crazy cheap now). I can’t say I like either as well as I like the blue match needle KX, except for the benefit of not having to pull the advance lever out to turn on the meter (which itself isn’t so bad now that I’ve had cornea surgery and I can shoot right eye again).

So you shoot a 40-year-old defunct film mount, a mount that sells 5,000 Units a year and believe K-mount doesn’t meet your single needs. Therefore Pentax should abandon (or redirect precious development resources from)‘the only distinctive feature of its entire system and align with an external mount controlled by some other company, and this decision will cause Pentax to thrive?

I’m skeptical. Far better you should shoot a specialty action camera and leave K-mount for the current user profile.

New aluminum storm doors front and back to replace the existing 1980 doors. Gracious, they’re expensive.

I estimate they’d be 240* SMU’s.

Pre-emptive seller's remorse

I know. It was the third one I’ve had but I’m reducing to K-1 and FF lenses only. I’ve tried just about everything except a 200/4 Macro and A135/1.8 so not much obsession left.

I have A20/2.8 and I can sleep without a starburst lens in my drawer. Allen can use it. He’s pretty stoked (which is the fun part of selling).

So just a KX, MX and LX, and the only m42 I’m keeping are the CZ Ultron 1,8 50mm, the 8 element 50/1.4 and Auto Takumar 85/1.8. The jury is out on the SMC 35/2.8 Macro. I might keep KP just for birds, or just use the DA35 crop.

Really, honestly, once they’re gone I don’t miss them. I’ll buy some new stuff to keep Pentax going, but aside from the K collection it’s just excess stuff. :D

I have the 8-element, K50/1.2, A50/1.2, many 50/1.4’s ST - FA, and the new D FA*. It might be interesting to attempt some sort of controlled study.

IMO the K-Series 50’s render warmer than the M and A and later series due to coating changes. The K50/1.2 is soft below f/2 but still a nic lens for someone who likes to play with lenses. :)

Low-Quality Journalism

Many of you know that for 10 years my elder daughter was a Senior Producer for a Broadcast Network News Division. For five years she was at the Washington Bureau and produced first the Pentagon and Embassy Row, then the White House. She moved to New York where she was Senior Operations Producer for a nightly live broadcast, and Breaking News Producer (on call 24/7).

She just told me the most significant change affecting quality of Broadcast News was the closure of City Bureaus and related termination of professionals of all stripes - who were replaced by stringers, and finally libraries of clips to download for a fee from the Web. At the end, before she became Commincations Director for a State Attorney General, she spent more time authorizing purchase orders for B-Roll than arranging reporting teams for some live shot somewhere on Earth.

As the News Staff size shrank, the competition for positions, backstabbing, harassment, lieing, cheating, political litmus tests and collusion and everything else horrible - and low pay - made the work impossible to justify. One by one talented people have left, to be replaced by lower paid, less experienced, junior employees who all have one world view.

I won’t write another epistle, but know that I’ve only scratched the surface.

FWIW, they tried to replace Sony shoulder cams with 5D’s, but the videographers just couldn’t pull focus with a DSLR. They loved the Canon color profile but they hated the quality of the product. So they got the Sony’s out of the closet and wrote a color emulator to match the Canon palette for their editing tools.

And what does Pentax get out of an open system? There are plenty of m43 options and they seem to suit your needs. Nothing about MILC in general or m43 suits me. How will I be served by an open platform Pentax?

It’s a self-centered analysis that would end Pentax altogether.

Maybe. There’s an increase on the Ballot but the outstate farmers don’t want to pay for city highways, so I doubt it will pass. Missouri is a Balanced Budget State and tax increases must be voted on - Constitutional Amendment - and pretty parsimonious.

Gasoline is gasoline. Missouri has massive pipeline capacity from the Gulf and Cushing (legacy of the pre-EPA-rules refineries*) and massive storage capacity in the former refinery row, meaning low final transportation cost, and 2nd lowest gasoline taxes in the nation - 19c / gallon. Consequently we enjoy quite low prices at the pump. California by comparison has 55c / gallon tax, plus intermediate production and refining regulations that add cost to the base gasoline price.

* At one time St. Louis and Kansas City metro areas had the second and fifth highest refinery capacities in the USA but but by the 80’s they were quite old, almost all built before WWll. They’ve all closed now due to pollution issues. The Shell Oil refinery (all of them, but I personally know this about Shell) had valves emblazoned with Swastikas, imported from Nazi Germany prior to the war. At the time Germany made the best valves.

If you don’t mind manual focus and economy is a strong consideration (and you haven’t done the obvious and bought a used FA77 Limited yet), the ‘K’ fast medium telephotos are good choices - K85/1.8* (especially), K105/2.8 and K120/2.8. All three are sleepers, though have fewer than ideal number of aperture blades for creamy smooth OOF backgrounds.

* SMC Pentax 1:1.8 85mm is (reportedly) the same lens optically as the Cult Classic SMC Takumar 85/1.8, with heritage from the Auto Tak 85/1.8. The K lens has a bayonet mount.
