Mirror lockup and potential sensor damage ...

I depends on your lens. If you have a 20mm f/5.6, it might not damage the sensor. If the sun is out of focus, it can help a lot too. Sunset might give you 3 stops, but a fast lens could still manage to hurt the sensor.

Disclaimer: I do not speak from my own experience.

Shake reduction in video was surprising

Maybe this is general knowledge, but I had a problem with SR in video mode — the camera was on a tripod, but the image was still floating. After a bit of experimenting I found out that the SR was not compensating for the camera shake, but for the movement of the face. Had to turn it off, because the video was in a tight framing and the SR exposed parts of props that shouldn't be visible. Not sure if the feature is really cool or a bit annoying. Couldn't find it described in the manual.

Something similar in Swedish repair center. I still had to get in the queue by the end of September, but I will actually send the camera when the spares arrive (probably in October).

Gave my K-1 for an upgrade, the store clerk later told that the Swedish repair centre is overwhelmed with orders. The good thing is that I will have my K-1 for the early autumn shots. By the sound of it, my place in the queue won't be available until October. Looks like the upgrade is in high demand.

Tamron introduces 2nd-generation 15-30mm F2.8 - Will Ricoh upgrade DFA15-30?

From the summary:

Coatings and IS are irrelevant to Pentax system. Not sure if Pentax uses Tamron AF. I wonder if the new elements do much for the image. Alas, there are no image samples.

I don't think we can judge the existence of Pentax spirit just by the facts alone. Being owned by Ricoh alone doesn't mean much. I work in a division of a company that was bought up some 20 years ago, but the autonomy our division has is very high. We feel more like vassals than an integrated unit.

Even with merger of Ricoh and Pentax divisions, it is unknown if they are truly integrated or which values persisted.

Either sell it or have both K-1 cameras and won't swap the lenses as often, but it seems economically unjustifiable.

My local camera store guy agrees with you — not much new in Photonika, except a new Theta with K7 resolution. Is the sales guy reliable? I have no idea.

FI dunno, from the current lineup I personally miss the 70-200 ƒ4 the most, since the ƒ2.8 is too expensive and a bit too heavy. I am considering the 60-250, but I don't feel brave enough to make modifications to WR lenses.

Ricoh official update the K-mount roadmap

Correct me if I'm wrong, but even the DA lenses cover the 6×4.5 sensor size, which shows that whoever made the decisions at Pentax at the time believed that eventually 645 mount cameras will have true 6×4.5 sensor. There is a good reason to believe it could make economical sense, since the production tend to lower with time. I mean, when K-5 was launched, it had $1,750 MSRP, the K-1 was at $1,800, which is actually cheaper if you include the inflation.

Of course, it helps the K-1 that a very similar sensor is used by other brands (that shall not be named) which helps to offset the costs. My point is that the price for sensor production is falling and what might not make financial sense today might be reasonable tomorrow.

Finally, we just don't know the price the Hasselblad pays for that 53×44mm² sensor. Perhaps the camera costs a fortune not because of the expenses, but because there are people willing to pay.

If the next 645 camera is true 6x4.5 sensor camera with 100Mp, it will have the same pixel pitch as 645Z, which has about same pixel pitch as K-1 and K-5.

For a comparison, amazon.de sells FA 77mm at €923 and D-FA 50mm at €1200. That most legendary of the legendary trio suffers form LCA. To quote opticallimits:

Those extra €300 and added weight buys you what? Quick and silent AF, weather sealing, wide-open corner sharpness etc. I'm not sure it's correct to say that the D-FA lens is unreasonably expensive.

There is quite a bit pixel peeping. Quick summary, D-FA★ 50mm is noticeably better.

Denoise in Darktable is not as good as I hoped

THIS. I had “sharpen” auto-applied to all my images (seems like default Darktable behavior). When I removed it, suddenly all suggested denoising strategies became usable. Thank you for restoring my sanity.

This IS good. I guess I'll lose a couple of hours trying stuff out.

I plan to look into it. Darktable has tethering (and I hope it will support K-1), but RawTerapee is written in C++ and gtkmm, which I prefer over C and GTK+ (if I ever get to contribute to any of those projects, that might become relevant).

I understand that RAWs will be nosier before I do any noise reduction. All I want is to be able to at least replicate the noise reduction that my camera is capable of.

Denoise in Darktable is not as good as I hoped

It is a well known truth that RAW files have less noise than JPEGs, except for me don't. When shooting at iso 6400 my K-1 does a pretty good job of reducing color noise and there is some fuzziness around edges. When I open the RAW version in Darktable, it has some serious light show going on. All the denoising strategies I could find were either too aggressive or even gave details that were just not there. To give a better idea of what I mean, I made an experiment.

The first two images are at ISO 100 to give a baseline. The denoise was up to the maximal available level or until the light noise was gone (the module used is in the description of the images). None of the results came anywhere near what the camera could do so either I am really really bad at this or Darktable is really bad at this. I might consider moving to RawTherapee. Lightroom is not even considered since I'd rather upgrade to K-1ii, which is has much more manageable color noise than my K-1, that is to say that applying default profiled denoise it gets rid of the already minimal color noise and doesn't destroy details.

For that you would need about 8 hours for the episode and half a year research, something like Hardcore History by Dan Carlin. Speaking of which, Dan, if you are reading this, please make an episode on Pentax history.
