The size of the moon image is roughly 1mm in diameter per 100mm of focal length eg a 1000mm focal length lens will produce an image of the moon roughly 10mm in diameter.

A reminder that the Total Lunar Eclipse of July27/28 is not visible to everybody. This one is mainly for S.America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia.

Just a reminder of the lunar eclipse next Saturday morning. Umbral phase starts at 5.14am and just after totality starts, the moon sets just after sunrise. Not the best for us but oh well. It will probably rain anyway.

My wife got mine through TVSN. They claim they will honour their warranty should there be a problem. Mine came with a Sigma 18-125 and it seems ok. Delivery apparently was only a couple of days. I love the K-70.

I second that. The book is a far better read than the Pentax manual.

The 300mm diameter mirror is a 39mm thick circular slab of glass that has a precision concave (paraboloid) surface ground and polished on the front surface. As the mirror cools down at night, it's optical figure changes resulting in image degradation. The fan helps to bring the primary mirror down to ambient temperature fairly rapidly, stabilising image quality. The fan also helps to prevent dew formation on the primary mirror.

Depends on what you mean by cheap. I looked at my scope, when I was buying, and thought "I can't make it for that" and gladly paid the money. I'd sooner spend the money these days to order online, have a couple of boxes delivered and be up and running in a couple of hours.
Back in my youth, we had to grind and polish our own optics due to them being unavailable in NZ. Construction could typically take years for a comparatively small scope, and I'm just not that keen anymore. I do have a 14" mirror in the garage that needs some work, and a telescope to put around it, but there is no hurry. The 12" suits my immediate needs and the 14" is now a sideshow. I may never finish it but that is ok.
Today it is all about "bangs for your buck".

Weather sux at the moment. Been meaning to tart up the 12" but wouldn't be putting the K-70 on. I do have a dedicated planetary cam which I should give a whirl.

Just the usual heads up on the next total lunar eclipse on July 28. First contact will be around 5.14am. Unfortunately for us, just after the moon enters totality, the big yellow fronts up (sunrise is 7.31am) and moonset is at 7.38am.
