Astrophotography Filters for Lenses

Welcome to PF first of all! The only recommendation I can give is contact High Point Scientific their staff is very good and helpful they can guide you in the right direction. A decant LP filter that size range from $40.00>200.00+ for 77mm us, won't hurt to email them they can help. You then could maybe find one in the UK or have them ship one out if shipping price is fair. You will what a filter that has good transmission in the A-Alpha,H-Alpha and O-III spectrum, helps in contrast with emission nebulae and other deep sky objects. You may what to watch Astrobackyard on Youtube his channel has helped me a great deal. Good luck and clear sky!

Glad to see some astrophotographers here, Pentax Syntax suggestion is spot on Highpointscientific has a great selection and lots of help if you have any questions. From my very basic understanding depending on the tube length image may not fill the sensor.
Ordering a Skyguider from HPS this spring, along with my current camera and lens set up try and improve my astro shots. Not sure how deep space I can get with a 200-400mm lens and unmodded DSLR but soon to find out, but a start. Just watched Deep Sky Imaging by Glenn Newell on Youtube awesome stuff!

ZombieArmy, went back and looked at some old images from my K5IIs with the Talked about lens at F2.8 edges were not that good for astrophotography. Just shot a few on my K1 in crop with the 17-50 tamron super soft to F/4 then better. Once it clears here also still going to try it on the stars. Looking forward to those images!

Beyond awesome! I am going to try some deep space astrophotography at some point, do some MW wide shots stuff now. Looking at buying a StarGuider for tracking but will have to wait on astro lens down the road. Just really looking and learning at this point will have to use what I have for now. Have you ever used Sequator software or DSS, Sequator seems to be smoother to get threw from what I've seen? Thanks Brian

Thanks Steve, Have used this lens on my K5IIs with poor results, but sure most of that was on me. Have improved on my astrophotography since then. Just never thought of putting on my K1 in crop mode for a try until now.

Has anyone used a K1 and Tamron SP AF 17-50 F2.8 XR for astrophotography in crop mode? I have a Samyang 14mm 2.8 but not the greatest copy in the world, but ok. Thought I would give it a go if anyone else has tried this combination.
Thanks, Brian

Was thinking the same thing, but I was not able to set up my custom user settings. Not sure you can you set up with bracketing with EV stops in the custom settings? Will bracket 5 shots with 2EV stops is what I will be doing for the eclipse.

Hope this help's

K1's popping up on PF Marketplace

99.9 of most people spending two grand on a body has done alot of research! I would not worry about the number of K-1's on the market that are used! Everything is in black and white, AF,FR and glass etc. should have looked at this before they purchased! No one camera will fill the needs of everyone, depends on your style of shooting.

I have a Samyang 14mm F/2.8 but a bad copy, if you get a good one should be ok with some post work. Been looking at the Irix 15mm F/2.4 it has a lot of features I like, and build quality looks very good as well.

This maybe has been brought up before? I can not find any automated eclipse imaging software for Pentax. Software like SETnC, Eclipse Orchestrator only support canon and nikon.

Would be a great help if anyone knows of any such program! Thanks

I would run your lens threw it's paces, so if your copy is bad you can return it! Have a Samyang 14mm F/2.8 and has all kinds of problems decentered etc. and not usable. If you get a good copy I think it's a great lens good luck!

On UncleVanya's recommendation on a previous post, I purchased DXO noise reduction and is amazing. I also shoot wildlife in low light, dusk and dawn using K5IIs and Sigma 150-500 with great results, money well spent! Thanks UV

No worries, bought at Amazon and did not test the lens in a timely fashion and ran out of time to return. I tried to contact the manufacture several times with no luck, Email and phone!

I nearly always run my new purchases threw some test, but was on another project and lost since of time for return. Was really looking forward to using it in astrophotography and extreme wide weather shots,

most the Images I have seen are sharp and reviews were good, just a bad copy!!

Thanks

American solar eclipse 2017

I think your idea for two bodies is a great one, I will be doing as well. I would go for as much focal length as you have or can afford to rent, but 300mm should be fine. The K3 would be a good choice I think, but many here could break down the bodies better for your needs.

I would say NO, to the ND filters! Getting my gear ready as well, Shooting wide ( K1&15-30) or close both rentals. For solar shots K5IIs, Sigma 150-500 with home made solar filter, Bought two cheap UV filters 92mm and one 86/92 stepup ring and sandwich solar film between the two filters. Bought a sheet of solar film that reduces transmission by 1/1000th of 1% from Thousand Oaks Optical for around twenty dollars.

Good luck on your choice of location, will be in central Nebraska some where, but away from the masses! If you can get an extra 15-30 seconds out of the eclipse is big, cloud cover, haze etc. may be our bigger problem!

No expert just my thoughts, have fun!

I think my samyang 14mm may be decentered and is soft and far amount of distortion threw out the focus range. The reason I purchased it was many reviews commented on its sharpness, just got a bad copy I think! ( But a great paper weight!)

Will be the Pentax 15-30 or 24-70, not really which one at this point, but will calibrate the lens to that camera! Great advice on FOV going from crop to FF!

I appreciate all the comments and advice!
