K-3II broke down, need to buy new camera in Kanazawa or Kyoto

For others still looking the price of second hand Pentax cameras seems very reasonable. K-3 seems to go for between US$350-$500.

Pre-loved K-3ii for $500

Than why is Pentax so expensive in the Philippines, both new and second hand compared to Australia, US etc?

It is kind of ironic as many Pentax lenses and bodies are made in the Philippines.

At $500 in the Philippines I'd go for the K-3. That is a real bargain given that brand new ones are going for $1200+ in the Philippines. I had the K-50 and haven't touched it since I got the K-3. The movable screen is not, in my view, a necessity.

Is the Pentax K-5 a classic ?

Although I think it's too early to say whether the K-5 is a classic, classic and best are two different categories. There are many classic cars that would hardly qualify as the best technically, but hit all the right buttons emotionally to be a classic

True. Often compact cameras have more functions like that.

My compact Nikon AW 110 from the same time as the K-3 has both built-in GPS and WIFI while my Canon S100 has a built in ND filter. Great for long and slow exposures of waterfalls.

But then they don't have all the advantages that DSLRs have. It's a trade-off I guess although the K-3 really should have had integrated WIFi as that was already common when it was released. The flu-card option is very second rate.

It is a bit buried and not the easiest to find. It was more direct on the K-7. On the K-3:

1. Go to Custom Image select (R/H press on the rear dial) and select B/W.

2. Then press INFO and another screen with options will come up. The first one is FILTER EFFECT.

3. Select that and then you can select various color filters plus infra-red. The RED filter will give the highest levels of contrast.

Alternatively, you can go down the list and select CONTRAST to increase the contrast.

Or better yet, follow Utak's advice. His B/W photos are brilliant and way out-class mine!

I use the RED FILTER function and then boost contrast in PP if needed but that is a simple start.

Have you tried the infra-red function? That is in B/W and super close to the old school analog photos. Depends on the subject but you can get some really great results.

Mode dial failure on K3II ?

I know this is an old thread but how tight should the MODE DIAL feel?

On my K7 it was very stiff and firm but on my K3 it has some play in it and very easy to move when unlocked. Is that normal?

Starting to worry I might end up with another case of mode dial failure just because there is some play.....

Worth upgrading 55-300 WR for PLM version for soccer?

The camera you have will obviously influence the focusing speed but on my K-3 the PLM 55-300 is MUCH faster then the previous versions. Seems to focus much more smoothly too and is super silent which sometimes makes you wonder if its working!

I second this choice. The DA 21mm is my favorite lens to use on my K-3 when i just want a light weight walk around lens. Wide enough to be useful in most situations.

Short answer, YES!

I have had both the the non WR version and now the PLM. They are like night and day. The focusing is super fast and that is exactly what you need for sports. Yes, it is a bit slower at the long end but that is is what higher ISO is for. Bump up the ISO to keep your shutter speeds at a reasonably high level. I also like the compact size.

Pentax SMC Pentax A 50mm 1.7 for macro photography?

Thank you for the lens suggestion and also that link which I had not seen. Very useful! My original question was prompted by seeing a second A50 1.7 and some manual extension rings in a second hand shop but it looks like there might be some more versatile options out there.

---------- Post added 09-26-17 at 10:03 PM ----------

Great suggestion. I had not considered this lens as I thought the faster speed of the other 50mm lenses would be better but in fact in macro that may not be needed anyway.

Unfortunately the range of older Pentax lenses in Australia is not so great as in the US but they do come up now and then.

That sounds like a good option and a lot easier to use. I will have look and see if I can find one.

Thank you every one for the very good suggestions. Based on the discussion here, I decided I will look for a second hand dedicated macro lens. Sounds like that might be the easiest solution. Based on my previous use I have found that I use all my lenses regularly but hardly ever use any accessories I have bought over the years!

Great tip. I used to have a Vivitar 2X macro-focusing TC back in my Nikon days but never really used it as I wasn't interested in macro photography back then.

Will see if i can pick up a PK version but they are pretty rare in Australia. Even the more common Nikon version I had to order from KEH!

Pentax SMC Pentax A 50mm 1.7 for macro photography?

Thank you very much. Really shows the possibilities either way. The reason why I was asking about the DA-50 as I already have that lens but I'm willing to buy the Pentax-A 50 if required. It seems like a nice lens in any case.

Regarding deglassing an old AUTO TC, doesn't a TC in effect act like a close up lens anyway if used with a 50mm lens? If so, it may be useful even NOT de-glassed.

Pentax SMC Pentax A 50mm 1.7 for macro photography?

I am quite keen to try out macro photography and I was wondering if, using manual extension rings, the MF Pentax SMC Pentax A 50mm 1.7 lens is a better option than the AF Pentax-DA 50mm 1.8 lens?

Is buying the MF lens redundant if I already have the AF 50 lens?

Also, do you really need a set of AUTO (with contacts) extension tubes or is a full manual set OK?

Using a full manual set and the Pentax SMC Pentax A 50mm 1.7 lens, will the GREEN BUTTON set the correct exposure on a K-3?

Thank you!

Do you underexpose by default?

I used to always under-expose by 0.5-1.0 stop on my Nikon film cameras but generally let my Pentax cameras set the exposure as most of the time it's spot on. I just make an adjustment if the particular situation seems to suggest doing so.

I haven't started using the "user modes" yet but this seems good reason to do so. Is that option available with the K-3?

I have both of those lenses. I prefer using the 18-135 for its reach and compact size but I can't notice any difference in optical quality.

If that is your main consideration get the 16-85.

Wow, if I saw that level of distortion caused by heat I would stop using that charger.

Just stick to the original Pentax charger or by an extra one if you need to charge more than one battery at the same time.

Did you manage to find the small piece that was broken off? If so, super glue might do the trick. You can use that to fill in the crack on the side too. Won't be pretty but it will be functional.
