A serious compact from Pentax

It may be psychological, but it certainly feels it - it's supposedly 19% smaller - but it feels a lot smaller than that when you hold it. Enough of a difference to make it feel more like the LX5 than the GF-1..

I gave my other half my Panasonic GF-1 - and I think I would miss the image quality if I went for one of the 'enthusiast compacts'.

Had a quick play with a GF-2 this weekend - much smaller - easily smaller than G11/12. I might just have to get one with the little 14mm pancake.

Come on Pentax - you're missing out here..

Thanks for that!

Of course, you are right.. Problem is, I can see a use/need for all of them! I suspect I would use the DA70 or DA15 more in the first instance, and a longer reach prime is definitely a gap at the moment..

Looks like I will be posting some DA70 shots in the not too distant future. Or maybe some DA15 shots. Aaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhh! :D

Thanks for all the useful input guys.. It looks like the DA70 is the popular choice. I'm certainly not disappointed by that - time to find one for a good price now!

Maybe it's just a British thing then :D

Apparently the UK is one of the most active markets for MILCs at the moment..

I don't think you have missed anything at all.. The compact range is definitely either at the lower end or specialist waterproof/weatherproof.

I also would really like Pentax to do a high end compact with a larger sensor size, full range of exposure modes, nice fast lens (short zoom or fixed focal length would be fine) and some features to differentiate themselves a bit. Given their differentiators in the DSLR market then they could go with smaller size and weather resistant.

The Canon S95 is the only truly compact 'enthusiast' model - and I don't think any of them have WR.

To be honest I wouldn't know the difference at all myself! My other half happened to say 'nice photo of a forget-me-not' and I thought 'so that's what they are!' :D

Oo interesting! We know them as Forget-me-not's over here - I wonder if they are a variant or something. I'm not much of a plant buff I'm afraid..

..I think :D

I would very much appreciate your opinions on my latest bout of indecisiveness!

I have:
K5
18-55WR
DA21 3.2
DA35 2.8 Macro

Ultimately I'd like to add:
DA15 4
DA40 2.8
DA70 2.4

And, I'd like to replace the 18-55 with the 18-135 at some point as a walkabout zoom

So, what should I get next?

Should I go for one of the Limiteds next - if so which one?
Or get the 18-135 next?

My other half recently started showing some interest in pics - so I gave her my Panasonic GF1 + 20 1.7 expecting to be able to use it from time to time - but guess what.. I can't get it out of her hands!

So should I replace that with a high end compact for slipping in the pocket instead?

As for what I like to shoot - bit of everything actually, I've started a couple of threads recently with shots from the 21 and 35 which shows the type of stuff I like shooting best..

Ugh, I'm so indecisive me. Any opinions greatly received..
Once I make a decision I promise I'll post some samples! :D

Ah how true that is. I'm a newbie and I think this is the most welcoming and friendly internet forum I've been on for some time now. Other photography forums (esp. the brand oriented ones) seem from time to time to be nothing more than arguing, flaming and 'mine's bigger/better/longer than yours'. I saw a good cartoon only recently of a wife calling her husband to bed.. His reply was "Sorry dear, I can't come just now - someone on the internet is wrong

Not so here - I wonder if it's reflective of the type of person that choses a Pentax in the first place.. perhaps we just enjoy taking pictures and discussing them more than winning an argument. I know I certainly do.

Oh, I came from FF too - my shoulder feels much better for it now :D

I was going to reply by saying that I have a real craving for nostalgia and retro sometimes..

Then I thought that I don't fancy driving around without a safety belt, watching grainy programmes on TV in lo-definition, or struggling to fit stuff onto a 5gb hard drive again.. :D

However, I do sometimes look for a little of the old charm that you see in older photographs. I've never been a pixel peeper, or a perfectionist. I like my photography for the art of it. Then again, I have more vinyl records than I do CDs (which I collect) and I'm a sucker for an old motorbike. I guess I'm just living in the past sometimes ;)

Camera bag frustration

I think everyone struggles with Camera Bags - we're all different and want something different out of a bag.. which means manufacturers tend not to make exactly the right bag for everyone.

I have a Kata 3N1-30 just like you - and I stopped using it as it was just too much weight/bulk.

I got a Lowepro Classified - good bag, but just felt like too much to carry about for too long.

Oddly enough, I've ended up with a Crumpler Cupcake Half Photo backpack - the bottom section carries all my kit and the top section is then free for other stuff (i.e. junk!). You're quite right with the backpack problem - it stays on the back and you miss a load of opportunities. So I got a Crumpler Jimmy Bo 400 - sort of toploader, sort of codpiece looking thing (!) which will hold K5 plus anything up to a short zoom I reckon. (I use it with the DA21 and DA35 Macro as it fits both in) It even fits into the top of the backpack when I'm not using it. It's strap can be used for shoulder or waist - which means the camera gets used much much more and its very comfy over long distance.

Reason I mention this, apart from sharing your pain of going through many many bags to get the right one, is that I think there's a correlation between access and usage vs. how much kit you actually take. I started using my camera much more when I took less stuff and it was easily accessible. Crumpler do a Jimmy Bo 700 which is waist or shoulderable and seems to hold K5 plus I reckon 3-4 other lenses.

Perhaps it's worth looking at some options that means you might not take as much stuff, but you'll use what you do take a lot more - combined with a big bag for when you want to travel point to point with lots of stuff? (which is what I use the backpack for)

I don't think I've owned a P&S digital for well over 8 years now.. all been DSLRs since then..

I've been browsing the P&S competition threads and I fancy a go at joining in. Thing is, I need a compact P&S to do so! Maybe I could run a bit of a competition of my own :D

If you were in my position, what would you get to join in the fun. A few rules:

- Digital, not film (I'm not sure I could face going back to a film compact just yet!)
- New or Used, don't mind (in production or out of production)
- Max budget, say, um, 150 to keep it interesting
- Pentax or non-Pentax (but obviously a Pentax would be preferable ;) )

What would you go for then folks?

Superb shots guys - great to see there's plenty of DA21 love out there - you all seem to know exactly what to do with this fab little lens..

Fries - I think you are correct - I think the K5 only corrects distortion on JPEGs.. At least that's how it appears to me anyhow. Happy to be proven wrong though!

Philippe - you are right as well - in the old film days there was no correction and distortion was just accepted for what it was :)

Here's a couple more from yesterday - not as happy with there as I think the composition is just so-so and, well, I guess I'm just not as happy...

But.. they are both good examples of the fact that the distortion in the DA21 really does depend on the context. With the first one, it's only slight and doesn't detract in my view from the scene. In the second, the context (wonky old mediaeval window) means that it takes some looking to find it..

In the shop - when I was looking at a range of wide angle options, I did look at the 12-24 as well - but I was looking to put together a small size lightweight kit - and both the DA15 and DA21 were significantly smaller.

Not a consideration for most, I guess, but it was for me at the time. I do toy with the idea of one of the WA Zooms from time to time. Then I think about the next DA Limited I could get and somehow forget about the zooms for a bit.. :D

I'm sort of at peace with the distortion now.. but having said that, it's an old church - it might just be a dodgy curved building :D
