Better Portrait Lens? FA 77 1.8 vs DA 55* 1.4

Interesting decision:
1) You decided to buy the Pentax FA 77mm.
2) You bought a different lens.
3) You are out $XYZ and you still don't have the 77mm lens.

(Pray tell - someone - what am I missing ?)

4) You WILL regret this decision - of COURSE you will.

Better Portrait Lens? FA 77 1.8 vs DA 55* 1.4

I have not used the 55mm, but I bought the 77mm about two months ago and it has rarely left my camera !
Our grandchildren visited this weekend - i don't know if I have ever had better results in portraiture (primarily candids, these kids don't sit still) !
There is that 'pixie dust' factor that people mention with the 77mm...

I get some amazing shots from my 55-300mm. At sports events, from up in the stands, crisp and suitable for good-sized enlargement.

Well, this ONE is easy - or so I thought !

It's gotta be my SMC (not HD) 15mm ! Love that sharpness, love those vistas - i can get lost in them ! Love those sharp starbursts ! Love the ergonomics, the lens hood, the total experience ! Such amazing shots of The World !

Then - on second thought - and as others here often write - it's got to be that amazing 77mm - it makes even amateurs like me into skilled portrait photographers ! And it's won all those awards as Best-in-Universe-Pentax-lens-of-all-time, right ? I bought it two months ago, still learning its many versatile uses.

But then - as I await Adam's email message to arrive any minute now (or, Adam, are we doing Pony Express ? or smoke signal ? or skywriter ? or telepathy ? - - just tell me, i can't wait -- how are you going to notify me of my winning entry in the holiday season 31mm lens sweepstakes today ?).
Because that will be my forever-and-a-day single lens that i cannot do without !!!

(fine print: but it will be easy to hide those small 15mm and 77 mm lenses on my person - even after i've 'won' the 31mm !
THE prime trifecta - actually PERFECTa - the 15mm, 31 mm, 77mm - no Canikon trio can hold a candle to this trio !)

I ignited a minor controversy there - and thank you Gray for fanning the flames (or should I say fanning the starburst?) !
A few further bits:
As the only lens if that were the question - again tip of the hat to Gray regarding the vistas it can capture.
Regarding the latter - emphasis on "can" capture - because yes as Nielpolar and Digitalis both point out this wide an angle poses challenges - but that's part of the fun.
My preference for the SMC version of the 15mm over the HD is steadfast ! If there are going to be starbursts (I happen to like them a lot) then I'd want them to be sharp (a la the SMC version with the sharp aperture baldes, not the wimpy quality of the HD with the rounded blades. Personal preference of course ! I would refer the interested reader to the SUPERB review (published right here on the Pentax Forum) of the five new HD lenses compared to their SMC counterparts. This was published when the HD lenses were released - was it two years ago ? (help me moderator !).
And of course if I am ever going to be able to afford the 31mm f1.8, then all bets are off - again ! (Wow - a reprise of October's best all-time lens controversy !)

DA 18-135 WR, Show us what it can do

I agree - the weather-resistance of this lens especially in a situation with fast weather changes including rain and dust is exactly why i love this lens. I shoot with the amazing K5sII.

BUT - I prefer to use my primes - I have the incredible 77mm and also the wonderful 15mm lenses - and I am saving up for the 31mm. Hard to beat those !
(I have the original 15mm, the SMC, not the HD - - i like the sharper starbursts I get from the SMC version.)

But when I don't feel comfortable changing lenses, the 18-135mm WR is great to have !

BTW - does anyone have advice on how to deal with "lens barrel creep" with zoom lenses ?

DA 18-135 WR, Show us what it can do

I use several Pentax lenses with my K5IIs (used to have a Kx), including primes such as the DA 15 mm f4 (the previous one, w/ the better starburst effect IMO) and i'm about to buy the 77mm f1.8.
I travel with all of them, but on day trips, there's nothing like the 18-135mm WR zoom -- b/c of the great range and the weather-resistance. The ability to shoot in essentially all conditions with a truly weather-resistant superb dSLR and this excellent lens is something that has often had other photographers of other persuasions very envious !
The photos others have posted here demonstrate the excellent IQ of this lens. The only rap that I've (rarely) read about (here) but not experienced in 4 years with the 18-135mm lens has been the question of corner softness. Minor cropping addresses this.
I'm very happy with this as my walkabout lens - would buy it again w/out hesitation.

But this wasn't B&H or Adorama or other stores - this was Pentax itself !
This is why i'm curious (or suspicious ?). I am happy to be reassured - but won't relax unless/until the lens arrives. I've always wanted the 15 mm for the starburst effect etc - hence the SMC version.

(PS - Hi Adam - good to be back here - i'd been off the site for too long !)

Which 15mm lens to buy?

Sorry for being redundant - i just posted the same question elsewhere in the Forum - but I'm itching to get some help with this question:
Is Pentax still manufacturing - or manufacturing again - the SMC version of the 15mm lens ?
I thought it had discontinued the SMC last year.
I found both the SMC and HD versions of this lens available for purchase (altho with a ten day wait period for restocking) on the Pentax website/webstore this week. The HD price was $699 US, the SMC was $649.
I called the telephone number listed and was able to place the order for the lens I want (the SMC).
Does this make sense ? Is this consistent with what anyone here knows to be the case ? Thank you.

I've spent a fair bit of time researching the 15 mm lens, trying to decide whether to buy the HD (newer) or SMC (older) version.
I was under the impression that the SMC was discontinued and that Pentax was manufacturing only the HD version -- and of course it is the SMC that I want.
However, on the Pentax webstore site this week I found BOTH of these lenses available for purchase. I called the sales department telephone number to inquire - and it appears that the SMC is again available (or perhaps always has been). I was able to place my order, with the caveat that there is a week or ten day delay to restock, but that i would have it within about two weeks.
Although i want to simply believe that the salesperson (and website information) was correct - - i wanted to check if anyone knows anything about the status of the SMC 15 mm lens.
Thank you !

*PETITION* Lets put an end to the crazy online Pentax lens prices in the US!

This interference with pricing is the last straw - i'm moving over to Canon or Nikon. Joining the lemmings...
I am just junking the Kx piece of junk i bought 2 years ago. Too unreliable.
I am putting up for sale my 18-150 and 55-300 Pentax lenses. I'm happy with them BUT if I can't continue to buy Pentax lenses in a free market w/o behind-the-scenes price manipulation then let's cut our losses and move on. Pentax has such a tiny market share anyway. No reason to continue to be contrarian.
I can't find a B&M store locally to buy Pentax products and if Ricoh/Pentax are going to mess with pricing this way - this sends enough signal about how they value free enterprise that this is the third strike against them in my book.

After a year or two of dSLR photography (Kx and several Pentax lenses), I have probably got over 7500 photos stored now in my iPhoto folders on my Mac.
Now I'm ready to start printing !
I've done some reading and I've talked to friends and to pros at Art Fairs.
I will be looking at everything from 5 X7 to much bigger.
Children and family; nature; lots of water and weather and clouds; landscapes; sports.
I'm looking at the Epson R3000 - this price range is okay for me ($650 - $700).
Comments, suggestions would be really appreciated !
Thank you.

Why the Kr ?

Hi
i just went out and bought the Kx this summer, which I love, spent weeks learning the camera and taking some great shots - and now I see Pentax has updated it w/ a new model, the Kr...
There was nothing wrong w/ the Kx. The autofocus point snot being visible is not a big problem, altho i've seen lots of criticism posted here about that.
So why the new model ? Just 'marketing' ? or - 'planned obsolescence' - the way the US car manufacturers used to operate ?
Opinions please !

Lens buying horrors, anyone?

I'd be curious - altho I suspect Adorama and B&H would play this close to the vest and won't spill the beans - as to the frustration level the superstores have had w/ this recurring issue and Pentax' obtuse obnoxious obstructionism... no fun for these retailers to be caught in the middle, I'm sure.
I REALLY wanted to buy the DA*16-50 lens and I had intended to until my horror mounted as I read folks' experience with that lens here; Pentax lost a sale on this one - i'm going Sigma for this part of the focal lens when I order my Kx and lenses later this week. (And - to think that this is a lens that lists at double the cost of the camera !)

Second SDM failure for DA*16-50mm lens

Given the terrible track record of the two lenses in question - and specifically regarding the SDM motor which clearly is an issue despite Pentax' protestation to the contrary - I would hope that a basic corollary of consumer law in this situation would be a reasonable good faith assumption - ie continued warranty coverage for at least this additional period of time.
I'm a physician, not an attorney, so this is not legal advice. However as a Canadian I still harbo(u)r the fantasy that they'll do the right thing for you (I'm a dual citizen - so I'd invoke the same 'logic' if you lived south of the border !)
My quick post yesterday at 5 AM was perhaps not sufficiently blatant in its sarcasm - I will try to find a moment to post my full correspondence w/ Pentax USA - but their official position on this issue is mind-blowing and insulting.
Good luck !

Hello all !
i just heard back from Pentax - WONDERFUL news, i'm sure everyone will be relieved:

"there is no known issue with the DA* 16-50mm SDM lens at this time".

So, there you have it, right from the source, official pronouncement, June 21, 2010, 11:21 AM.
Now we can all sleep so much more soundly.

I will be posting a thread of my correspondence w/ Pentax on this Forum later this week, but in the meantime I just couldn't wait to share.
