You can get the body from ProDigital2000 on eBay for $979. They are the parent company of a chain of camera stores in Ontario. They are very reputable. I have bought many items from them.

The Tamron 17-50mm and 28-75mm questions

Why would the two Tamrons be any different than the Sigma. If anything, the Sigma's internal volume exapnds even more when it extends out. Think of the lenses as bicycle pumps. The bigger they are and the more they extend, the more volume of air is displaced.

I have both Tamrons. They're both great. If you shoot more landscapes then the 17-50 would be preferable If you should more portariat, then the 28-75 sould be preferable. For image quality I give the 28-75 a slight edge. I would not woryy about the loose barrel issue Neither one of mine has that problem. If they did have the problem, it would take only a minute to fix it, as shown on the uTube video clip.

Tamron 17-50 F2.8 --> 67mm filter - 74 mm long - 434 grams

Tamron 28-75 F2.8 --> 67mm filter - 92mm long - 510 grams

For optical preview I pull the preview lever to the right and hold it there in the pulled position. I don't push the shutter button halfway.

I did the mod and it works just fine. But it works only stopped down. You don't get the benefit of focusing wide open. Oh, well..

Helios-44M-4 and M42 Question

I bought a Helios 44M-4 lens to play with. It seems to be a very nice lens. It does not have a switch of any kind on it. It olny has a pin on the mount side. Turning the aperture ring does not have any effect on the aperture. It always stays open. The only way I can get the aperture to close is to depress the pin.

I mounted the lens on the body and put the body in "M" mode. No mater what aperture I set the lens at, it always stays open and gives me wide open shots, Which btw are very good I think. But how can I get the aperture to stop down? I remember reading somewhere about the pin surgery but I can't find it. What would the pin surgery do? Would I be able to use the "M" mode after surgery, or I will be stuck in shooting in AV mode with stopped down lens? I need some clarification please. Thanks.

If the prizm goes dark, you still have two other ways to focus. You still have the split part in the middle. You also still have the matt part of the screen everywhere outside of the middle circles that you can use, just like the stock screen.

I've tried the 30.5 mm step down ring on 28mm and 35mm lens and it did not vignette. With a 24mm lens it did. I think it should be alright with 50mm and longer lenses as well.

DA 21 LTD or DA* 16-50 next?

May I suggest you also look into Tamron 17-50mm F2.8. It's smaller and lighter than the DA*. Its optical quality is perhaps better than DA21 with less distortion and is also faster. It's also sharp edge to edge.

I think maybe you could research the DA 21 distortion to see if it'd be suitable for archituctural shots.

I think people will be surprized that all the so called "refurbished" K 20Ds turn out to be brand new indeed. This is Pentax's way to get rid of excess inventory when a new model comes out rather than selling them at an officially low price. A short while after the K20D was introduced Cameta on eBay put a lot of refurbished K10Ds fup or auction and a lot of people commented that theirs was brand new, mine included. I've since sold mine to a co-worker. Enjoy your brand new cameras.

Front-focusing with Katz Eye screen -- curable?
Posted By Stratario
Replies: 22

I make my shims from 3M's clear plastic sheets that are used to make presentations to show on overhead projectors. If it is too thin, then I cut very thin strips from sticky lables and stick one layer to each leg of the shim.

I have put KatzEye style focusing screens from www.focusingscreens.com on both my K100D and K20D bodies.

Removing the original shim from K100D is very easy.

Removing the shim from K20D is more difficult. The shim has a latch of its own that keeps it from coming out. You have to lift the latch to remove the shim. And you have to lift the latch and slide the new shim under it.

40mm DA vs 43mm FA

Nice comparison Rainer. I've had both lenses at different times. So I can't compare them directly. Do you think DA 40 is more "contrasty" than FA 43?
