Is this dust or fungus?

The darker rings around the spots make it look like beginning fungus to me. It is the beginning of something really bad. I have seen it before. Clean it now.

The case is "infected" and the mold spores are impossible to completely eradicate.

It looks like a type of airport x-ray that used to show up sometimes. The X-ray machine just scanned small sections and if something seemed suspicious the whole thing would get zapped.

Non-digital SLR from Pentax?

If someone wanted to make a new K1000 they would have to get the tooling etc. from the Ming Camera Company in China if it still exists since Ming bought it from Pentax. Ming's camera had an LED meter because the people who made the meter needles stopped making them and an LED meter was affordable. The Ming camera I have has a metal top cover BTW.

The person is using European screwdrivers (see Leitax), so maybe it is a European source.

Another example why camera stores are dying

Camera stores have to sell a ton of cameras to make a profit with the small margin cameras have. A mark-up of 10% is common. Stores that sell mail order are more likely to have enough volume. That being said, I was talking to a local camera store owner and he said he hasn't heard anything from Pentax for a while. He sells other brands mail order.

Pentax MX - compatible with Zeiss or Leica Glass?
Posted By pentaxus
Replies: 20

Leitax converted lenses will meter stop down on the MX. The camera will know to stop down meter because it won't sense the lens aperture feeler. If using small lens openings use an eyecup if possible since light coming in around the eyepice will affect the meter reading.

Replacing Pentax MX focusing screen for another's model

Anyway, only MX and LX focusing screens will fit the MX so pulling screens from another camera is an interesting project but will not help.

In the days of film, these cameras were made so that you could take pictures with them as they were or by replacing the clear back with a standard back. I suspect this one will be fun to use.

Auto Rikenon 50/2.8

Ricoh made cheaper 50mm lenses to go on the KR-5. I know they made a 50mm f/2.2 and I may have seen a 2.8. When you focus does the front of the lens rotate? If it does that is what it might be. It is kind of like a tessar design but only the front elements focus ( which lowers close up quality but makes the lens cheaper to make ).

Some trouble about unknown matter in my lens

My guess is that it is condensed lubricant from the focusing system. Water would probably already have dried out. The instructions from PSChlute and Ranchu will work for cleaning anyway.

Change lenses whilst still on?

I change lenses with the camera on all the time. When I put a new lens on, the camera knows that a new lens is on the camera, reads focal length properly and adjusts the image stabilization appropriately ( at least my slow speed shots are sharp). Changing lenses when the system is on will attract dust and I check the sensor regularly. Maybe us old folks are just used to changing lenses at will but turning the camera off and on with every lens change just seems like a time suck.

One way to check the seals is to rub you finger against the part of the back that pushes in against the seals. If you get black stuff on your finger, the seals are bad.

Specks of 'something' in the viewfinder ...

If the specks are nice and clear they are on top of the focusing screen or the bottom of the prism. Some people damage the focusing screen by scrubbing the bottom of the focusing screen trying remove what is on top. As has already been mentioned, it doesn't affect pictures.

Make sure the hot shoe is clean. If the flash doesn't fire at 1/60 sec. there isn't much you can do that doesn't include disassembly.

Pushing is underexposing. My experience is the same as Digitalis. Overexpose by shooting at 25. Develop 15-20% less. Get shadow detail.

There is foam around the base of the prism that is supposed to keep dust out. It is unusual for that to get onto the focusing screen, but.......

Salt Water Pentax K-1

Immediately was over a long time ago. Salt water is nasty stuff. When I was working in Carmel in the 80's somebody had their Nikon FA get hit by a wave. They walked up Ocean Ave. only stopping at the drug store for directions. By the time they got to where I was, the battery compartment was corroded solid ( probably took 15 mins.). Being hit by a wave is worse than any "water resistant" spec. and way worse than dunking because water is heavy and a wave pushes with a lot of force

Could be worse. A friend had this happen with his Canon and a 300mm 2.8 attached. Damaged the lens and ripped the front off the camera. Glad it looks easy to deal with.

K1000 curtain tension adjustment gears sticking out
Posted By pentaxus

My guess is that the shaft of the curtain barrel slipped out of the bushing on the top. The pin at the top is about 1mm in diameter and needs to go back into the bushing. I've never done anything like this without already having the camera completely apart. Try lifting the mirror up (maybe taping it that way) and see if you can wiggle the barrel back into place. Be careful to not damage the shutter curtain. Good luck.

Broken aperture on DA50mm/f1.8

Check to see if the aperture lever is bent. Sometimes it gets bent in when dropped and sometimes it gets a little twisted which makes it not move smoothly. Use small pliers to straighten things.

A few decades ago a friend and I took a trip to Death Valley. We used a cooler with dry ice for storage. Not always practical so I try to arrive early and find a tree to park under. Photoptimist is right, though. The only way to eliminate risk is to not bring your camera. A buddy of mine always had an 8X10 view camera in his trunk saying why have a camera if you can't use it.
