From DPReview....
One problem we encountered with this lens in real-world shooting was a higher than expected proportion of slightly defocused images, especially visible when shooting at F2.8 where the depth of field can be extremely shallow. This was not a systematic 'front-focus' or 'back-focus' problem, but instead an apparently random tendency to miss focus slightly in situations for which we would normally expect a 100% hit rate. This issue persisted across a variety of camera bodies, from the EOS 450D through to the EOS-1D Mark III, so we can only conclude that it is a problem with the lens itself.

I just realized the K-3 is the only Flagship model on the list. Do you think that may be slightly responsible for the vote distribution?
Granted Pentax doesn't make cameras that compete with the top of line FF offerings, but if only the K-50 and K-500 were on the list, would K-3 owners vote for them?
We may be a little lucky that a Pro-FF camera wasn't dropped this year.

Self-Portrait.
Yes, the camera pictured is a K-3... but the shooter is a K-30 with M-50/1.7

^Were you encountering similar issues with your first copy? Also, how good is your second one AF performance wise? Does it still struggle in low contrast areas?
I feel I may not have a bad copy, I might just be holding the lens to a standard I shouldn't.
I have doing more tests and noticed that when the lens is set to a further distance prior to attempting AF, it has a higher success rate of hitting the focus. Also, if the lens is currently set to a focus distance that is anywhere near the desired AF distance it just accepts it as being in focus, when in fact it is not.

Tamron 70-200/2.8 Focus

So I purchased a cosmetically great, lightly used version of the Tammy 70-200/2.8 Di LD IF Macro. (for use on a K-3)
I was concerned about focus issues from the research I did prior to the purchase, but the price basically made it a consequence free purchase as I can eBay it for as much or more than I paid. So in just a couple hours of use, my fears were realized. I first thought it was a front focussing issue, so I did the focus adjustment in body. However, the issue is not consistent. It is as if the Lens is lazy. It's accurate, maybe 1/3 to 40% of the time. The other times is just settles for close enough. On a f/2.8 tele used for portraiture, this is easily detectable and just not acceptable. I plan to use the lens through the next week to make sure it is an ongoing issue.

My questions for the Forum are two fold.
First: This issue is well documented, but no one has been able to reveal a solution other than return it and hope your next one is better. Has Tamron acknowledged this issue and can they fix it?
Second: Whats are our other options in this lens category? The DA 50-135 is shorter than I want and the focus and SDM issues have scared me away from it. Thus, is our only reasonable option the current $1250 Sigma 70-200/2.8? Does anyone have another comparable lens they could recommend if I opt to sell this one?

Thanks in Advance.

Non Pentax Flash for K-3

^Nailed it.
The P-TTL is good on the K-3, and having a flash with it is a necessary evil for HSS.
I also completely agree with klkitchens, a well controlled manual flash set up when appropriate is preferred.
I have done the vast majority of my flash work manually, and it is the only way to get creative results.
In those moments where speed and changing conditions are factors though, you can rest assured that the K-3's P-TTL has you covered.

That might be a hard sell, as all manufactures offer a decent and fast Native system 50mm that DOES have AF.
Samyang would have to price it LOW or offer some insane image quality.

Sidenote, anyone discussing this?

Exactly. Its not so much for the aperture, since those click in place well on Pentax lenses. I was indeed referring to taping the focus ring so I doesn't shift.

What a response to this thread! This is fun, I wish there were more posts like this.
So, i gather you like landscapes (very WIDE), street (Wide-Normal, and stealthy), and are interested in portraiture (short Tele, Fast aperture). Also, you pursue this photography while traveling.

Unfortunately, this covers a spectrum of focal lengths.
For the landscape you a very wide lens, with little distortion.
Sigma 10-20/4-5.6 ($429 new)

Street is comprising primarily of 35mm (on ff) with 28mm and 50mm also being popular.
DSLRs are not the best at street due to their size and "professional appearance"
Frankly, my favorites for Street are an Olympus XA (film camera) or an Olympus E-p2 with the f/8 body cap lens.
Street is more about feel, timing, and stealth than optical performance.
If you are interested in still using your k30, which is reasonable since you travel, a old 28mm pentax lens would work great.
Use that K mount, put on a Pentax-m 28/3.5 ($70), set the aperture to f/8, set the focus distance to 3 meters (hold it there with a little gaffer tape), and everything from 5 feet to infinity will be in focus.
Then shoot quickly and quietly.

That leaves $500 for portraits. Which is good, because that is expensive.
Here fast aperture (f/2.8) zooms (70-200mm) are king. But, they are also expensive. A Tamron 70-200 2.8 may be found for $500 used if you are patient.
However, since you travel, lugging a mega 2.8 tele is unrealistic. There for a prime is the answer.
To keep the Limited fan boys happy, find yourself a used Limitied DA-70mm ($420)

If you want a single lens for $500 that can handle all three aspects Very Well, the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4 Macro Contemporary is a reasonable solution. I have been using this lens for two weeks and could not be happier. There is distortion on the short end, much more noticeable in portrait than landscape, but from 50-70 it is Awesome. Also its minimum focus distance is so short the lens hood actually gets in the way. Think about it.
This way you could take one lens on your trip that you just spent the remaining $500 on.

The only segment of the photography industry with growth potential at the moment is Mirrorless cameras. An FF DSLR would surely increase the perception of Pentax in the Pro-DSLR discussion, but Canon and Nikon are struggling for not effectively embracing mirrorless quickly enough and find themselves losing sales to Fujifilm, Sony, and even Olympus's m4/3. While us Pentax DSLR shooters want an FF option, I agree that the market as a whole may not need one. Since Pentax would have to build a new lens line regardless of choice, A Q-style camera with a reasonable sensor size (APS-C) might be more viable. Mind you, they shouldn't associate it with the Q system.

I hope I am not the first to discover this "Twilight Calculator" on JeKoPhoto but I figured I should share it here with you all.
Essentially you input your location (Coordinates), mine were done automatically. Then select the info you want. ie. Sunrise/Sunset+Blue Hour+Golden Hour (w/ moon data).
The output is a wealth of information.

Check it out.

I believe a lot of the hype surrounding the Df is fueling its votes. I wish they had the Df in the section below (own it, want it, had it). The "want it" would far outweigh the "own it." The camera has got a lot of people talking, and is the most popular on DPReview, but I am skeptical of its sales potential. The only info I have been able to find was from their pessimistic sales forecasts from November, but seeing as all the major retailers still have abundant stock... I don't think we have to worry about the Df owners club mounting a come back.

Not sure I can vote for a 20mm-40mm lens (still trying to wrap my head around that focal length spectrum). Sigma's 18-35/1.8 was a real game changer offering a 1.8 fixed aperture in a zoom lens.
