That confounded Ricoh pin...

I was gifted a Rikenon P 50mm 1.7 lens some years ago and had intended to use it on my Program A - until somebody mentioned the 'dreaded Ricoh pin'. It's not a problem on film cameras, of course, but I did (at that time) consider purchasing a digital camera so I thought the knowledge may come in handy at some point. I had found this article and, bearing in mind that I wasn't the most natural "let's take it apart and see how it works" person, had a go and......it works for me!!...........still haven't bought that digital but the K-new sounds interesting.

New S1a user: Trying to fix shutter & mirror return issues?

Good morning!

Itís called Prym. I cannot emphasise enough how sparing you need to be in the application, as shown in the video. If you are, and use the method shown, you will be well rewarded. By choosing to effect a repair yourself you obviously accept full responsibility for the consequences and, equally obviously, need to have identified the problem - and solution - correctly.

Good luck.

Take care,
Mike

Hi - glad you found them useful. I used a minute quantity of a very fine sewing machine oil - bought from John Lewis. Sorry, but I'm away from base at the moment but will post the name in the morning, when I'm home again.

Reads like it's working for you, which is very good news...........it's certainly god my old girl up and running again - the next task is to go out with my 16 year old grandson and double-hand some street photography.......even if he's going to used a digi-Nikon!!

Take care,
Mike

Lurked.......and now joined!

Hi all,

I have actually been lurking here for some considerable while but have now taken the plunge - not before time!!

I have been a Pentax user since 1963 (SV and S1a) and have also used Leica (M3) and Nikon (FM3a) in the intervening years. Was fantatic about photography since first learning to d&p at school and continued for many years - at times managing to earn a living at it.

Life, the responsibilities of marriage and raising children became greater priorities (surely a common tale?) and now I also have 4 grandchildren - so photography somehow faded into the background........aside from the usual family shots.

I still have my original S1a, together with a Program A that was an impulse buy, and have recently done the sticky mirror and incomplete shutter repairs on the S1a and will shortly undertake the light seal replacement on both.....oh yes, itís still film for me!!

My eldest grandson (16) is getting into photography now - though digital, which is something Iíd love to be able to explore with him......even though his parents bought him a Nikon(ooops!!).

Iím sure that I will be looking for help with the mysteries of digital and Iím certain that the resident experts will come up with solutions in the skilled and friendly way that Iíve found here in my lurker past.

Take care,
Mike

Hi,

Welcome to the S1a club!!

I use an S1a that I've had since new (yes, that works out that I'm over 70 and should know better) - a jewel that fits my hand and style like it was made for me...........which I believe it was, of course. As do we all.

Because of the recent Covid-19 lockdown I've recently had to fall back on my own resources and have found the following invaluable:

You Tube

and

You Tube

now - as it inevitably will - the subject of lightseals comes up and I'm going to have a go at this..........(after all, how did we manage in the days before foam?)

HOW TO REPLACE LIGHT SEALS WITHOUT USING FOAM STRIPS, MOVIE CAMERA STYLE | Photo.net Photography Forums

The first two do work and are excellent - and if I can manage, then anybody can - but do be very, very sparing with the oil.

I'm currently in Dorset at the moment and the lightseals will be my first job on returning home so 'wing and a prayer'.......will post after the job's complete.

Take care,
Mike
