Wanted - Acquired: Pentax FF-1 Waist-level finder for Pentax LX
Posted By Paul_C

Got a bunch of gear stolen a few months ago and I'm now finally getting around to replacing it. Sadly the ever-unavailable Pentax FF-1 waist-level finder was among that equipment.

I'm not looking for charity, I'm happy to pay the reasonable going price (whatever that is these days) for a replacement. Please let me know if you have one you can part with, including price and condition. It doesn't need to be "mint" or anything, just working (I'm a photographer, not a collector.)

Cheers,
Paul

Film recommendations

I've been shooting a lot of Velvia 50 (original formula) lately and am trying really hard to like it. I can't recommend it for high-contrast scenes as the shadows will block up quick at box speed, but shooting it at iso 32 or 40 should somewhat help alleviate that. I've read that it's not recommended for long exposures as reciprocity failure kicks in fast and heavy, but I've not tried it.

So far Provia is my one true love in slide film. For 35mm stick with the 100. Shooting medium format the grain doesn't matter as much and 400 works a treat. I also just got back a 120 roll of Ektachrome E100G which looks very promising on the light box.

(Reala is probably the only color negative film I'd bother with, but even it is a tough pill to swallow after getting used to Provia.)

These guys have a Pentacon 6 / Pentax K adapter for $35, just scroll down to "Adapters for medium format lenses" and expand.

Price List - HARTBLEI & Kiev Cameras and Lenses | HARTBLEI

Also check out their "super-rotator" line of tilt/shift lenses available in various mounts (K included.)

Their EU site has their line with Zeiss glass Hartblei

[edit]
Forget the adapter part, I misread your post. The t/s lenses they have are still pretty interesting.

Canon makes a cable remote with intervalometer for the 20d/1d lines. The one here modified for the XT works with the K10D.

EOS201 - Canon TC-80N3 camera controller modified for digital Rebel (300D), Rebel XT (350D) and XTi (400D) - $175.00

It's a little pricey but has a number of useful functions. See the review at TC-80N3

DA 12-24 vs DA 14 + DA21

I currently shoot with the 12-24 as my only zoom lens and find it to be a terrific performer, but I'm still planning on picking up the 21 as I'm in need of a wide-angle lens that fits in my pocket.

Size matters.

Uncomfortable Pentax BG-2 Battery Grip ?

I have mine set to use the battery in the grip first. When it runs out I swap in a spare without ever turning off the camera. The in-body battery lasts damn near forever that way and keeps the camera available to shoot "just in case."

Uncomfortable Pentax BG-2 Battery Grip ?

I was disappointed in the grip at first - not quite shaped right and felt plasticy in comparison to the body, though it did give my pinky purchase immediately make holding in landscape orientation more comfortable. Since then I've left it on and grown accustomed to it. I added a kirk L-bracket which had the nice side effect of fleshing it out a bit when holding in portrait orientation.

to tripod or not to tripod

I use and highly recommend Gitzo GT3530LSV legs with a RRS bh-55 head. This was an upgrade from a bogen/manfrotto rig of 3021pro legs with a 488rc2 head.

The bogen gear is great for the money, but the gitzo+rrs is worth every penny.

From my (limited, non-scientific) tests I couldn't see any appreciable difference with shake reduction on or off while on a tripod.

Cool, we should shoot/fondle gear some time. Avant, I have a 540 you can toy with while we're out.

The pancakes are certainly on my list to pick up. I could *really* use that 21 to throw in a pocket while out for walks.

No problem. I'm sporting the 12-24, 31, 43, 50 1.4, 77, and 300 4.5 (which is probably going for service soon, however).

Does the 24-70 cover full frame?

It tilt axis depends on the orientation of the plate on the camera, which is fully adjustable.

The 488rc2 is too big for a monopod, though is a decent head on a tripod.

I wouldn't expect to find a head that would satisfy on both.

Go with a small ballhead. I have that bogen 3229 that was mentioned and find it bothersome that it's limited to tilting on one axis. I'm getting rid of it and picking up something like the bh-25 from reallyrightstuff.
