Advantages of HD PENTAX-DA 20-40MMF2 8-4 ED LIMITED

For me, on APSC, it provides 24 28 30ish focal lengths with AF and quick shift with prime-like quality and limited rendering - the latter being something that the 18-135 could not do at the time of the 20-40’s release.
The fact that it is par focal has also been a very useful quality.
It is still compact and the primary advantage for me comes from it’s WR pairing with the DFA 100 macro both of which fit easily into a Domke F5XB so remaining a versatile and small package.

Late wrap up for the FA* 24mm:

Apologies for disappearing completely but I became overwhelmed with both work and leisure activities!

Anyway, the FA* 24 is a very nice lens overall and when I could give my full attention I enjoyed using it. Conversely I also struggled to use the focal length for the whole month (I should have expected this after singling the DA15 back in October '15).
Great bokeh and decent performance wide open on full frame make this a useful lens - yes the sharpness drops away at the edges but if the lens is wide open then my subject is generally close up and filling the centre of the frame. Once stopped down to f8-11 for landscapes it is more than sharp enough - I don't have the DFA21 for comparison.

This is not a lens I would use all the time though - after playing with the A15, various 20's and a couple of 24's now, I think I am happy enough at the 28-31 focal length on FF for the majority of the time. For internal architecture shots I will probably stick with the DA* 11-18.

So, although the lens is easy to use (even in MF) and I really like the clutch mechanism as well as the images it produces I am not sure that I will keep it yet due to the focal length - time will tell :) Oh, the CA - lots of people mention this - it is definitely present up to f4 in some images but goes away with a click in Lightroom (or the editor of your choice!!)

Well after a bright start its all gone a bit "PeteTong". Taken pics but no time to process or comment so apologies.

Anyway. Halfway through and I am impressed with the FA* 24. I haven't really been using it how I will do (FA24, FA43, DFA 100 kit) but I am confident that I'll be able to use it for everything I'll need to. Its sharp, nice bokeh and the CA goes away upon import to LR

End of month round up then for the FA 43 Limited. This lens does seem to draw different opinions from people; personally I really like the the fov on the K-1 and the fov on APSC draws the frame in to similar fov as the DA70 would on FF, but keeps the normal magnification, and I find this to be quite useful.
I used the lens on the K-1 and the K-3; wide open, stopped down a bit and a lot, with close-up accessories. I used it for landscapes, close ups, product shots and on... My main regret is that I haven't yet tested it for astrophotography.
I have owned this lens since 2015 and of the the three FA limiteds I'm pretty sure Id keep this one if was put in the position to choose. It's small, I find it easy to focus manually (I have small fingers :)) and it's produced some of my favourite pictures over the years. Above all else - it's very versatile and the SMC holds it's own in real world shooting against the newer HD coatings.
Main shortcoming? Probably the MFD but it's not as modern as the DA/DFA line of 40/50/55's and that's the only thing I can think to grumble about. There are CAs but these are easily dealt with in post.

If anyone is in doubt about this lens, buy a second hand copy from eBay or similar. If you don't get on with it - sell it. You may lose a few pennies (or you may gain a few ) but not a lot. :D

I'm in - feeling positive about chances of completing August :)

I was considering a shiny new DFA 21 to accompany the FA limiteds but I bottled it .... just too many pennies.
I have, however, had a new delivery today of a vastly cheaper (less than one fifth of the price) FA*24 which is currently sat on my K-1 waiting for Monday :D

Well I've made it. No mid month report from me but this month has been far busier than I was expecting; but I have just finishing getting back up to speed on the commenting - think I caught everything but no double-checking allowed :D

With luck it will be plain sailing to the end of the month now.

Well the good news is that the replacement DA* 300 turned up today and appears to be working correctly so far. The duff one was collected at the same time so kudos to SRS (and Parcelforce) for sorting it all so quickly.

Now comes the hard part - the learning curve! :)

Hope they are able to salvage it for you

In other news ...
My shiny but second hand DA*300 turned up yesterday and I eagerly unpacked it only to find the focus ring is completely stuffed. Jams, scrapes or doesn't turn at all! :(
Most unlike SRS so I figure it got bashed in delivery.
Anyway, sorted over the phone today and I have an open box lens (slightly more cash) arriving tomorrow and they'll pick the dud up at the same time.
Can't complain about the service.:):D

Well it's been a busy old weekend but also a relaxing one. Made the time for photos but will have to catch up commenting during the week (again). I think this will be a recurring theme for the month :D

Oh, found a decent-priced (pre-loved) DA* 300 on SRS here in the UK so that will be arriving next week. Any hints/tips on use will be gratefully received. I have had the HD1.4TC for years so looking to test the combo at the local canal - barn owls have nested there - fingers crossed etc

The F-5XC or the F-803 work for two lenses. I have also used the F-5XB with the K-1 Fa 43 and Fa 77 but it was the rugged wear version which is more flexible than the others.

Thinking of coming back for July. Been a long time since January!!
I need to single the FA 43 because I never have. But I want to give the DA*11-18 a good workout on the K-1 too. Has to be 16-18mm. All other focal lengths will vignette - badly.
Any preferences? I am as yet, undecided.

This being the case and in no rush to reacquire, monitor the second hand stores and eBay. I wasn’t sure if I wanted the 40mm but after a couple of months an auction came up in the UK and mine cost me £85 inc postage. Practically mint too.

Backpack for Bicycling with Pentax Equipment?

Late post but I have been mulling something similar but my stumbled-upon solution will not work for a K-1 - it simply doesn't fit.

I looked at these for ages and couldn't find anything that worked well with the rest of the gear on the handlebars. I also gave up on taking the K-1 and turned instead to an older workhorse.
So my reply is only really for anyone who is struggling to find their own solution to safely carry a DSLR on a bike.
My very recent solution to carry a K-5iis (one of the smallest Pentax DSLRs) with a DA40 limited fitted and a DA15, DA70 along with it is this:

Podium® Flow? Belt 2.5L with 620ml/21oz Dirt Series Bottle - Shop from CamelBak UK
(Can be found for much less if you shop around)
The zip pouch at the front carries a couple of ziplock bags and desiccant as this is not a waterproof bag. There is adequate room for a spare battery and SD cards alongside the camera.
This has proven to be stable and comfortable on both a road and a gravel bike ride.

I use this mode for star trails

Well for me this has been the hardest SIC since my first in January 2015. Camera and lens great; available time - pah!

I think I missed two days in the end and I still have some comments to complete so ... even though I got all excited about using the 31 in February I am going to bail. I just don't think Ill have the time to do it justice so I'll do my own thing instead :) March? April? Possibly but who knows.

Anyway ... the positives. The K-3iii has proven to me again that it can deliver perfectly useable images at ISO 6400 - I purposely limited the auto ISO for the month and with the small aperture of the zoom it sometimes proved a bit of a challenge. Once again I have been very pleased with the quality and performance of the HD 55-300PLM. Very nice bokeh wide open and acceptably sharp too.

Recreating a (bad!?) 35mm lab-scan with Negative Lab Pro and Lightroom

Negative Lab Pro is a fine addition to Lightroom. I haven't recreated any Lab-Looks but I am using it to convert my scans from the negatives of all my old film rolls.
Here's one from early 1988 - believe me this is far better than the image I received from the lab :)

Well on a familiar theme I find myself falling behind on the commenting again. I almost didnt take a pic tonight but couldn't bring myself to "fail" so todays pic is a gear shot.
Anyways ... the wifes sewing/knitting room is now completed (well, AFAIK anyway:)) so I may be able to finish the rest of the month in relative sanity!

So ... wasn't going to partake in February but I realised that my FA31 is pretty close to 28 so, any excuse as they say. Also, although I singled the FA31 in March '21, towards the end of last year I found an excellent deal on a silver 31 that I couldn't resist. As a bonus my black 31 sold for more :):):)

As a result I'll be singling a new to me lens but in a familiar focal length - here's hoping...:D

Well hello ... new joiner here ;)

You're already talking about February and I'm miles behind in January!
Work and DIY have been all consuming for the last few days - I do have four pictures to upload so I think that means I've missed a day at some point too.
I may not get time to comment on all the days I've missed but the plan is to start on todays and work backwards :)

Well now, the month is being quite difficult really (but then it is supposed to be a Challenge) as its dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home.
Lens choice - swings and roundabouts - quite long on APSC but versatile too - it's a very good and very useful lens that I will finish the month with.
I really am missing using the K-1; even though the K-3iii is a great camera the K-1's features are still way out there :)
Now just to catch up on the commenting!
