Man, I wish prices were even remotely near that here in AU. I'm planning to get a K3 in the next month or two, and even a raw body will be $1200. I want a grip and flucard, too.

100mm macro overkill?

I have a 90mm (Tamron) and 50mm (FA 2.8 Macro) and find both good for shooting figures. The 50mm is more flexible though, I think. The 90 is best for getting in real close, but for capturing entire 1/8 scale figures, I have to be about two meters away.

Which El Cheapo Long Zoom Lens would you pick?

I have a SMC Pentax-FA 80-320mm F4.5-5.6 Reviews - FA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database which I bought for $80 iirc. Certainly worth that price, though I don't actually use it a whole lot since most of my shooting is short range and its min focus is pretty dismal. Great for birding, though.

K-3 HDR. Does it work?

HDR is for jpeg only, it does all the processing in-body and outputs a jpeg. You have to do it manually if you're using DNG.

What are the settings up for Macro shot on Pentax K-5 IIS ?

Use Av mode and set deeper apertures. Also use a tripod when at all possible. Doesn't matter if exposures are long then. Keep ISO at the lowest (100 for the K5?).

Post some examples of what you're not happy with, for any further help.

K-3 good for video?

I don't see what you mean. Pretty much all accessories are brand neutral, mounting on the hotshoe or the tripod screw. As long as the actual video formats the K3 can do are a vast improvement over previous generations, the K3 should be perfectly fine for most video purposes. It has mic and headphone ports, so Ricoh seem to be taking it a bit more seriously, at least. With a third party mic and the plethora of lenses available to us, slap it on a rail or shoulder rig or whatever you want to do with it (which just use the tripod screw, thus brand neutral) it all comes down to the formats, and ultimate quality of video the K3 can capture more than anything else.

Of course, things like autofocus, focus peeking in video mode, and features like that may make a difference, but on paper, the K3 should be quite capable for general purpose video.

For those not pre-ordering... when will you buy?

I won't pre-order, plainly because I can't afford it at the moment, however I am keenly interested. Since I have to wait on funds anyway, I can wait and check real world reviews. ISO performance, DR, actual video functionality, all of that sort of stuff. I've managed to hold off stepping up to a K-30 or 50 despite them being really quite good cameras, but with the video capabilities of the 3, it is harder to ignore. But I'm forced to wait regardless.

What would you be upgrading from when the mythical K3 arrives

If the rumours currently abound prove to be true (ie faster AF/tracking), 24MP etc, then I will quite likely get one (though not immediately). I'm still relatively fine with my K-r, though its ISO performance leaves a lot to be desired. And no mic port. Or grip. Or top LCD. But I mostly shoot on tripod at ISO200 anyway so I can deal with it for the time-being.

I only have the 15 from the limited line, and while it is excellent, I rarely use it because I just don't have much use for wide. I'd really love to get a 77, though.

K50 (and 30) sensor same as K5 or not?

That's good. With the price of the 30 now, it is incredibly tempting... but I prefer the way the 50 looks. Not sure if simple cosmetic differences is worth the pricehike.

K50 (and 30) sensor same as K5 or not?

I've seen some conflicting reports as to whether the K30 (thus the 50) uses the same legendary exmor sensor the K5 has. Obviously the bitdepth is different, but I imagine that is simply a firmware thing to differentiate them. Is the sensor simply some cheaper 16MP sensor or is it the same one?

K-x settings for file size

Since the K-x is the same mp as my K-r, you should fit ~780 (raw) shots on a 16 gig card. If jpeg then probably a few thousand as Adam suggested. If the card is formatted (do it in-camera as opposed to on the computer) then you have either a damaged card, or a fake. They're only a few dollars, anyway, so no big deal to simply pick up a new one.

Pentax K-50 Announced

So let me get this straight, it has identical stats/functions/features as the K30, but in a marginally nicer looking body? For the $780+ these cost, I think I'd prefer a K30 since they're going for around $600 now. I've been eying the K30 for months, waiting for something new, though I really want a K5 replacement with K30-like video, but the ability to take a grip and external mic (not to mention top LCD and 14bit raw). Dunno why they didn't put K30-like video in the K5II.

Upgrade for portrait work - new Pentax, other system?

Get a K5. Its shutter is drastically quieter than the Kr, with far superior ISO performance, dual scroll wheels, best in class IQ, and if you get the K5II you'll have faster/more accurate AF.. You already have a good set of lenses, so why change systems?

I'm in a similar boat at the moment, somewhat grown out of my Kr, and looking quite heavily at the K5 (though need to save for it).

Help me get starburst effect with 15mm limited

I got my first success at it a few days ago, at f/11. You have to close down quite a lot to get it. Which means you need to expose properly for whatever lights you're capturing. It's not difficult, but it took me a few tries to pull off.

Poll: what is your most used exposure mode?

Always Av. I like control of aperture for DoF, but I'm fine with the camera taking care of the shutter speed. I sometimes adjust EV a little, but rarely need to. That said, if I had a higher end body with two wheels, I'd consider manual a bit more seriously. But with only one wheel on my K-r, it isn't worth the effort when Av gives me the results I want most of the time first try.

Nighttime Cityscape: Pentax DA 15 Ltd. VS Tamron 17-50 @ 17mm

yeah, did some tests at f/11, and I pretty much always shoot on tripod. I have the 15 on my camera at the moment, so I just need to play with it some more I guess.

Back on topic, the 17-50 is also a 2.8, right? So if speed is important, that may weigh in to the choice, too. Flexibility of zoom + speed gives it more points.

I've been unable to get any starbursts out of my DA15. :(

I do prefer the 15 in this comparison, but the 17-50 is certainly no slouch. If it is a matter of weight/space, the zoom will certainly do for the convenience... but the 15 is small/light, so shouldn't hurt to keep in a bag when you think you may want to do some dedicated wide stuff.

If buying as a kit with a lens, I'd say the 18-135 will be the most flexible, plus is WR. It is a great range, and is a better quality lens than the 18-55 or 50-200. I'm looking at getting a new body soon, and tempted to get one with it too, as I'm all prime at the moment and sometimes a flexible zoom would come in handy, especially WR for walkabout trips.

K30 nitpicks.

While I'm not sure with the 30, I'm quite happy with my K-r, that shake reduction automatically turns off when I set it to remote drive (which I keep it in most of the time as I almost always shoot in tripod) but automatically back on when I turn it to single shot mode, which I only use handheld. It's not buried in a menu at all. Just drive mode button, toggle between remote and single. All Pentax DSLR's seem to use basically the same menu system, so I imagine it is the same for the K30.
