Does modern post processing AI make old lenses good again.

I also have the Topaz Denoise and Sharpen software. I love them. I often use the both of them on one image if it's high ISO. And, this is with my K-1 and Pentax HD FA 24-70mm lens which does a decent job anyway. I will have to test it out using my K-3 and my Sigma 18 - 250mm lower quality lens.

Godox firmware update for Pentax compatibility?

Personally if you want a powerful and versatile on-camera flash don't doink around with the lower end Godox units, just get a Godox V1-P. These are awesome flash units, especially with the accessory kit. The rechargeable batteries on the V-1 last me for an entire 4 hour event shoot. I love the magnetic attachments like the diffuser dome and the gel disks. I had been using my Pentax AF 540 flash with a Gary Fong dome, but that is both cumbersome and also the dome would occasionally pop off.

LOL, the rest of the camera world is moving to better and better focusing technology, so Pentax runs in the other direction for manual focus cameras? I was hoping to hear that there would be a new K-1 Mark 3 for 2022. I find these stories rather disappointing.

Why are so many portrait photographers doing this??

Well, if they are shooting with strobes camera shake is probably not an issue. I do portrait photography in my home studio with strobes, but I still can't imagine not looking through the viewfinder unless I was doing a self portrait.

Pentax K-1 AF button fell off...

Good job Jim. In my case the superglue that I used to try to fix my AF button in place did not hold. I can still activate the AF without the button, so I am going to live with it. It is entertaining when I try to get my wife or daughter to take a picture of me when I ask them to focus using the missing button. I am also not going to ship my camera over 3000 miles, be without my camera for weeks and pay Precision Camera $300 or more to fix the AF button. Yet another reason why I personally have a hard time recommending Pentax to people wanting to get into photography.

The Godox / Flashpoint V1 is the best on-camera flash that you will ever own. The battery life is wonderful, and you can also use it off camera with the Godox transmitters. The accessory kit makes it even more useful. You definitely should be hanging onto it.

I suggest that you get a Godox AD400Pro strobe, a Godox AD200 Pro, a Glow EZ Lock ARC softbox for underlighting, a Glow collapsible beauty dish, a Savage white seamless backdrop, a backdrop roller mechanism and a couple C-stands with boom arms. Or, just go to a passport shop and be done with it. (I like the first approach better.) ;-)

When I had a broken contact on my Pentax 24-70mm lens I contacted Precision and inquired about buying the part. Nope, can't sell you a Pentax part unless they replace it for a few hundred dollars - plus shipping, plus the delays in time that the lens is in their shop and transit. This was all for a part worth a few dollars at most that takes roughly 2 minutes to replace. I contacted Pentax and some very nice guy in Canada sent me a replacement part free since Pentax won't allow them to sell parts for the cameras or lenses. This is another of the really stupid ideas on the part of Pentax Japan management. Here in the U.S. we can't buy parts and there is only one crappy place to have our equipment serviced, and it happens to be around 3000 miles from me. We have something like 3 camera repair places in the San Diego area, and none of them can repair Pentax because Pentax won't sell them repair parts. It is irksome to put it mildly.

LOL, you can get a full frame K-1II for $1800, so why would anyone pay that much to get an APS-C camera with a lower resolution sensor and no flippy-screen. I want a mirrorless camera that I can use my K-mount lenses on.

I always use a meter in the studio. I had a Sekonic 308 which worked great until it disappeared. Now I use an old Minolta IVF which also works well. Great for setting up the lights before a client comes in. You can sometimes find deals on ebay.

The new APS-C camera looks kind of disappointing. There is no movable screen, and no special EVF / OVF as some previous articles hinted at. Looks like the K-P is a better choice for APS-C.

I do like the new lenses, especially the 85mm.

Photography business

Hold off on the name and take some classes online on how to start and run a photography business. I am currently enrolled in Sue Bryce Education, and she covers various aspects of running a profitable photography business. Her main focus is teaching photographers how to actually make money with their work. So, besides the nuts and bolts of how to use your camera she covers things like posing (extensively, even hands), studio setup, marketing, sales, SEO for photographers and even self help seminars for photographers who don't value their work so they sell too cheap. You can sign up for a month for only $35, or a year for $299. IMO it is worth way more than that. She also has weekly live sessions right now, and I am looking forward to today's session. And by the way, I don't do Sue Bryce style photography. Comprehensive Portrait Photography Training | Sue Bryce Education

modeling lamp bulb

It likely tells you in the manual what the base size is for your strobe's modeling lamp. It's likely E26 or E27, and there are a lot of bulbs that fit that base. You need something that has the JDD bulb form factor, which is skinny. Most of the available bulbs are halogen, and as Steve mentioned the rating is for 150 W or less. If you have an LED bulb that is around the same dimensions like the one I shared it will likely work. The LED bulbs are actually daylight balanced. The halogen bulbs will give you a very yellow light, plus they are super hot.

Well, there are lots of halogen bulbs available, but if it works with an LED bulb that is what I would recommend. I replaced the halogen bulbs in my Neewer SK300 with these bulbs.

One of the best investments that I have made with my portrait photography was to sign up with Sue Bryce Education. They have hundreds of videos showing posing, lighting, processing, retouching and almost everything you could want to learn if you are looking to do portrait photography as a business. It's around $300 a year, and well worth the price. Comprehensive Portrait Photography Training | Sue Bryce Education

If you just want great classes on posing and such you can also checkout CreativeLive. The classes are free when live, and available to buy for reasonable prices.

Hmmm, if your sister has the money to hire a professional wedding photographer, then definitely go that route. If you have always wanted to try being a wedding photographer, then watch a bunch of Youtube videos for suggestions. If I were you I would be looking at a decent zoom lens and a decent flash as well. I highly recommend a Godox V1-P. Also, google Wilmington, NC River Room wedding photos for ideas on how other photographers have shot weddings in this venue. Hey, the worst that could happen is that your sister never talks to you again, or you become a wedding photographer.

Pentax K-3 autofocus stuck

Thanks guys. Yeah, I think that the AF button is stuck. I tried Larry's idea, but unfortunately switching to manual focus does not get around the stuck AF button being stuck As-F, and it prevents the camera from displaying the menu. I tried the video mode, but that still does not allow me to access the menu. I am not sure that I am brave enough to try Fries idea, even though this did occur just a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean. I am hoping that there is a non-menu way to reset the camera.

---------- Post added 01-18-20 at 05:11 PM ----------

Good news! I decided to try doing multiple clicks on the AF button in a variety of positions, and it finally freed itself! I think I will just switch it to shutter AF for now. Thanks all!

I was out shooting an event today and all was going fine when all of a sudden my K-3 got into a mode where it was continuously autofocusing. This pretty much locks up all of the functions of the camera except taking a shot. I shut the camera off and when I turned it back on it was still continuously autofocusing. I even removed and replaced the battery, but still the same problem. I normally do back button focusing, but the camera will not even let me get to the menu to try and turn it off. Is there a way to reset the camera without going through the menu? Anyone else ever experience this issue of continuous autofocusing? Thanks!

Well, I guess if you are shooting a lot of events with low lighting you could also look into getting a Godox V1-P flash. They have a great modeling light that works well for focusing. I love mine.
