How to deactivate SDM and allow for screw drive autofocus with DA* 16-50mm f/2.8

Thanks a lot. My 50-135 has been rather hesitant for the last two years. But since I had my daughter's old K110 (screwdrive only), I kept it alive by an occasional massage.
The procedure described by Class A in post 173 worked perfectly, using Notepad++ and the basic description in post 1. I was quite nervous, but it was really quite straigthforward.
The only difficulty seems to be to get access to the LENS EEPROM, with different procedures for each camera model. By far the simplest method is the one in post 173, if you own or can get hold of one of these old cameras, and an old SD card (max 2 Gb) to go with it. A good insurance against future problems. I suppose all motorized lenses will fail some day, and now I can at least fix the SDM lenses which also have screwdrive.
To Ricoh: Make this an option in the menu, and let all lenses have screwdrive.

Congratulations Pentax!
Well, of course we have to wait for the official confirmation, and above all for real world experience and testing, but practically everything about this camera looks great.
I was not going to buy this camera! I can't buy four cameras in one year.

What precisely would be the benefits of a new mount? I don't get it.
Perhaps because I have the K-01, a smallish camera that takes my standard lenses. Instead of a new mount, I would very much prefer a K-02, WR throughout, including the lens. It should not just look rugged. A few millimetres smaller body does not make much difference. OK, it cannot be pocketable, but how relevant is that for a system camera. Rather give it a better grip and an integrated viewfinder. And the more rugged the better.

I really wish more had the same attitude. After all it is a hobby (for most of us I believe), and it is much better to err on the positive side and be happy rather than always to focus in on faults and shortcomings.

Cool! The screen (internet or not) opens up new possibilities.
The print is fixed, and a certain number of megapixels may be enough. The screen, by the technique you outline, is insatiable.
Example: I made a landscape panorama of 12 frames from a lowly Canon G10. It was basically a test, since I was in front of a magnificent scenery on a trip in eastern Ethiopia and only had the G10. Just showing this off in Lightroom, when somebody clicks on it, they can zoom in, not to pixel-peep but to see incredible detail. It certainly has a wow factor. Seems like a technology for the future.
Megapixels: Never enough, but perhaps too expensive at a given state of development.

What are you smoking? It certainly has a blissful effect.
I do think comments were a bit more varied. I basically agree with what you say about the serious reaction, but I have always been surprised by the amount of whining (as distinct from criticism). This is not specific to Pentax or this forum. I also remember that when the Nikon D800 came out, some over at DPR were complaining that they did not need 36 MP etc. - and this for a gamechanging camera with a very reasonable price.

I remember this used to be a common complaint, but when I got my K-5ii I did not understand what people were complaining about. No problem whatsoever with the card. So it may have been fixed at some stage, perhaps with the K-5ii, or perhaps even before. Anyone out there with a K-5ii who has this problem?

I suppose there may be lots of improvements made behind the scene. I for one eagerly await reports about the new HD lenses, which may have received more attention than just the coating (not meant to belittle the coating). And how about the SDM? etc. (PS: I have three SDM lenses, two working perfectly, while my favourite, 50-135, has a problem, but not worse than it was fixed when mounted on an older body with only screwdrive).

It seems you did not get my point. I did not question your arguments, but the fact that you held so strong opinions made me wonder why you would spend so much negative energy here. I am not a fanboy (neither a fan nor a boy), and one day I may migrate to another system, depending on my needs. But I see no need to make a lot of noise.
Make good choices based on your specific needs - and stay happy!

You are welcome, but I shall see no need to reply.

Really! Why are you here?
But I take your point: An APS-C, even if good, is a waste of time. And even if they were to bring out a full-frame, it would be too late.
On this background, I find it strange that you cared to join the forum in March. Don't waste your life - be it on disappointments or trolling.

Looks like a winner!
Improved AF has been promised and was expected. But this is the first time I see reference to improved flash system, which has been a long-term demand. And there may be lots of goodies hidden underneath these specifications. It is very good (seems possible) if it is compatible with the grip and battery of K-5 etc., since that inspires confidence in investments. Not just the lens/body link is part of a system, but all links to external elements.
The only thing I really miss (but it certainly would not be in the specs) would be a function where the screw drive takes over when the SDM (or other motor) fails. After all, all motors will fail in the end, also in-camera motors, but we change camera bodies much more often than lenses so the latter is not a big problem. A small trick here would significantly enhance investments in motorized lenses and would be a confidence-turbo.

I wonder whether we may be in for a surprise. There have been occasional indications that the K-3 will make Pentaxians happy (how is that possible?) and turn heads (even my K-01 does that). The specifications "leaked" point towards a very solid upgrade, but some have already described it as conservative. Could there be something more? The single head-turning feature rumoured so far would be the 40 MP trick, certainly stunning if well implemented. But I am fascinated by the "3 user modes" mentioned in the leak. Is it simply the usual user modes, and why would that be important enough to mention as a spec? Let us assume (optimistically) that this camera will really turn heads, that Pentax has been working on the technology for quite some time and that there is a 40 MP mode. Could the 3 user modes refer to 1) Standard, 2) Enhanced resolution, 3) Enhanced something (how about high ISO performance?). I believe there was a camera (Fuji?) some years back with such aspirations, but apparently not a great success. Could it be done better today? For me this is science fiction, but so is shake reduction and handheld HDR technology.

These thoughts are pure speculation, based on wild rumours, lofty dreams, and a bit of logical (?) reasoning.

For me personally, a well-made camera along the lines leaked is already a head-turner. I am not a likely upgrader though because I am very happy with my K-5ii, and super-happy with my K-01. Even when I bring both, I often prefer the K-01. In many situation it takes better pictures, not because the technology is better, but because it looks so innocent.

Wise words, and what a relief! I upgraded from K20 to K5ii in June. The plan had been to wait for the expected "K3" , but on the other hand I really wanted to upgrade before summer vacation and some photo projects. Perhaps a good decision after all, although I still think I shall regret it in just a few weeks. Actually I hope I shall regret since that only means a bright future option.

In a few weeks he will secretly open a K3 discussion thread - the night before the official announcement.
Remember the wild rumours going on for weeks in the past. Times have changed.
But it could be the biggest jump since the K5, and that was a big one, more than anybody could realistically expect.

My take on this: Pentax is coming, DXO believes. I was actually positively surprised, given the obvious lack of Pentax lenses on DXO. It seems they realize this and intend to correct it. Why? Just to fill in the gaps? Or because they have been impressed by recent Pentax cameras and expect more to come?

Certainly. People think that the look of a camera does not matter, but this camera actually makes people look good. Either they smile at this funny camera, or they do not care about such a toy. Even when I put the 200mm on it, they do not take it seriously. Really great. Somewhat reluctantly, I have to admit I am in love.

Both the two leading suppliers of camera gear in Norway list the Sigma 35/1.4 in Pentax mount. None of them have it available yet, but one of them suggests that they should get it in about a week's time. Furthermore, the 18-35 is supposed to be available in October. I suppose this is based on information from Sigma.
But of course, it certainly is frustrating when the lens you want can only be mounted on a camera you have no intention of buying.

I think Uluru got it right. This year has been quite promising, within realistic expectations. The Company seems to be on the right track, although the products may not be very attractive to the followers of this forum (GR excepted). It would seem logical, however, that the next product, which I would expect to be released in "September" (the season before Christmas shopping), might be aimed at us. Some may complain that it is a K5-iii rather than a K3 though. I believe K5 is such a good camera that a iii, iv, v, vi ... would actually be very good. Improve, don't change.

Actually I would love a K5 iii, let us say with better AF (promised),better flash system, tethering, the option to force the use of the screwdrive (really an investment for the future) - and whatever goodies they are ready to put in. For me it makes sense to reserve the K3 name for a model with a different target, not just a newer version of the same class of camera (like K10, K20, K7, K5 - different cameras but same target). I like the naming style of the higher end Canons (version numbers added to the model). Even the sensor can change for the same basic model, as long as the concept/target is rather similar. The VW beetle changed even the engine (I believe), but it was always a Beetle. Thereafter VW has followed the same strategy with the Golf; the first version was somewhat faulty, but it is now a top selling car here, and remarkably good. Making a good product, continue to refine it, fixing the weak points, and always keeping it at the top of the segment, may be a way to create legends.
And then I would want a K3 (APS-C) - if it is possible for Pentax to come out with a higher-class camera. If it is light, tough, with a built-in GPS, it is made for me. A "K1" full frame is more of a luxury item (I salivate for it, but I know I shall not be using it enough to justify buying it - although I shall look for excuses).

Pentax Lens Price Hike - Here we go again!

In some places Pentax has a good presence. When I was searching for a supplier of Ilford paper, I came across a dealer of photographic equipment (pretty advanced stuff, see Spesialbutikk innen fotoutstyr. - Fotoimport AS). The only cameras they sell are the top Pentax models (plus the odd Holga and Polaroid). This seems close to 100% market share. So far it is a very, very local market (you should not look outside the shop).
Anyhow, Pentax is well known and well regarded among some highly competent photographers.

I do not care who is right or wrong, although I think Pål has got some points. I would love a full frame though, and some good wide-angle lenses. For lots of reasons, APS-C is likely to remain my most used system due to weight.
