To say the neocamera reviewers are impressed by this lens is an understatement.

Thanks, that pretty detailed review was well worth watching, all 24 minutes of it (though not all the auto-translation should be taken literally!).

The improvement in CA in the examples shown is astonishing - from "ouch" down to effectively zero. Edge sharpness at f2.8 shows a big improvement too and the bokeh looks wonderful. Not to mention faster focussing and the other improvements too. The negatives are of course its greater length, weight and (considerably!) greater price - but Ricoh can't defy the laws of physics or economics.

And now the K-3iii silver is in stock at SRS, I have some serious economic decisions of my own to make in the next few weeks ... 3,300 worth of decisions!

UK's consumer prices index (CPI) increased by 34% from 2007 to date so it's a very large price hike here too, inflation-adjusted. For a better lens, of course and with the law of diminishing returns who knows if it's value for money or not? Not me, not yet anyway.

Does it have that? The online manuals including from the EU site specify 60/30/24p for FHD - no 50 or 25 p or i. Does anyone have a UK or EU version of the camera (if regional variations exist) who could confirm?

Oh, and while we are discussing the K-3iii video shortcomings, I see from the available EU manual (English) that there is no 25p or 50p frame rate setting for anything. Nobody in the UK or much of Europe will be buying this camera for its video - which seems to be a "we don't really care" afterthought by Ricoh. On the margin, this will be a deal breaker if not added in say firmware, for me and some others anyway. My previous Pentax DSLRs all have this option, and I have used them all occasionally for 25p or 50i video.

Sometimes it's the little things that matter, even in expensive semi-pro technology.

Thanks I'll be checking it out :)[/QUOTE]

That can be very important because on Android at least, an incoming phone call will pause running apps and take precedence. That's a common complaint among say chatting Whatsapp users who get unceremoniously and without warning suspended due to a phone call incoming at either end. You have to end the phone call to get back in, and I suspect that it applies to all running apps.

Using an old phone with no sim card as a dedicated control may indeed be the best solution.

That's one of the risks of ordering things on impulse without knowing the full facts (which are never all in the manual or show up in preview tests and reports, for anything). EAS: early adopter syndrome - and I've fallen foul of this more than once, I can tell you! After being tempted myself this time around, I have calmed down a bit now and will wait for a few months to see if anything I don't like comes out of the woodwork. Or gets improved.

You omitted most of my post though i.e. "Rather than spend more development time and money to 'fix' that problem, and push up the camera cost even more, they may well have made a straightforward business decision to cut out the frills (frills for most of their intended market) and to stick within a predetermined camera size and price point. Similar thinking may have influenced their decision to omit a flippy screen, GPS and even built in flash... all of which would have been useful to some people."

And the D850 is a full frame, physically larger and considerably more expensive camera, even more so when first released. Perhaps a K1-iii will in due course satisfy more of your and some others' requirements, perhaps any technical issues can and will be overcome by firmware upgrades in due course, but Ricoh's priorities were clearly elsewhere.

Unless, as mentioned early in the thread, overheating would happen often enough for it to be a problem with this camera in certain environments, and the manual does warn of this possibility in the video section.

There was some thin high cloud, maybe that affected sharpness. More cloud is forecast for the next few days so I can't test that theory yet.

I spent an hour setting up with tripod, DA*300, K-3 and official 1.4 TC but had a devil of a job acquiring a sharp focus, whatever I did. Eventually I had to use quickshift to get there just before the exact time of the full moon - but this isn't it!

So I abandoned the TC a few minutes before the time of exact full moon (4:31 am here) and went out to do a few handheld shots, leaning back onto a wall. Here's the best of that bunch, levels done and a light touch of sharpening - subjectively it's as sharp as my earlier best TC shot. I have some work to do on fine focus of the 300+TC combination...

Though the K-5 had mechanical SR in movie mode, I still use it to this day for video and I never did use my K-3 for that. It will be nice to have that choice again!

They may be concerned about overheating though, and keeping to the old (otherwise unnecessary) limit may just let them avoid having to solve that problem.

The bitrate looks good enough, for h.264/4K30. If that bitrate or even a bit less is available for 50/60 fps HD too, it should produce an excellent picture. And thank goodness sensor stabilization is back - I hated my K-3's omission of that after having it on a K-5.

I need one most of all for photos of my youngest grand child, newly toddling. It's almost impossible to focus on her quickly enough indoors with my K-3 or K-5 when she's on her feet and looking towards me, whatever lens. So, A K3iii it will have to be!

Pentax K-3 Mark III Black Body

Too late now to get one from the initial batch, over here. Same message on all variations. No such warning on the Ricoh UK online shop, they are being somewhat less honest about the preorder situation, I suspect.

When your boat gets too close to The Queen and Pres. Trump at the D-Day 75th. Anniversary commemorations, nearby on the sea front at Portsmouth... the Special Boat Service will come to get you. Taken from about 1.1 miles distant with Pentax K-3 and DA*300mm lens handheld (100% crop).

I had no idea this was in one of my photos of the Red Arrows fly-past, until today. Note the security watch Tower in the background!

Some birds of the unfeathered kind ... The Red Arrows flying display team were at the Portsmouth UK D-Day 75th. Anniversary commemorations today 5th. June. Her Majesty The Queen, President Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel may have been impressed.

DA*300 and K-3. If the SDM on my DA*60-250 hadn't failed during the session, I might have done better...

DxO score for Pentax 645Z: 101!

The review makes it appear as if the Hasselblad is fractionally better than the 645Z at an almost identical price - but that is misleading, at least in the UK where the 645Z body costs 5,499 (at SRS) and the Hasselblad 7,787 (cheapest price with grey imports ignored in both cases). Either way it's a lot more expensive for that 1% 'gain' - at least over here, even last month when 645Z cost 6,499 but right now it's a bargain.

Maybe closer to 10 than 100. According to this unverified report: Mitakon Speedmaster 135mm f/1.4 Lens Hands On Images | Camera News at Cameraegg

only 100 copies of the original (no Pentax mount) release of this lens were made. Presumably, they sold them all.

But I have enough trouble focussing my manual Pentax-M 50mm f/.1.4 so not for me, whatever the price!

IBIS failure at -28C temp

Well it can't even be tested here in the UK as the coldest air temperature EVER officially recorded here is -27.2 deg C.

-10 C is rare here and that's the spec limit, so if it works anywhere below that it's a bonus wherever you are I guess. Someone mentioned the max. humidity spec. though, 85%, and that we can readily test, all my Pentax cameras have always worked just fine at our commonplace 100% humidity. In fact, it's 88% right now, and not even a rainy day.
