Are we really THAT rare?

Can't see it happening at the moment, given how saturated the market is. The K-mount just has too great a flange to sensor distance to make a nice mirrorless camera (look at the K-01...I love mine, but I have no illusions about it's size - it's just a little...errm...portly and brick like). I think to go mirrorless they'd have to develop a new mount and lenses, or jump on board with the L-mount or M43. I just can't see Ricoh investing in that.

What would be cool one day, is a hybrid viewfinder. Sounds like the latest APS-C flagship will not be bringing that to the party though.

Not a bad article, but that last bit about Pentax just doesn't ring true to me. I don't know how anybody could feel that way had they held and used any of current Pentax bodies, and with a very nice new full-frame portrait prime out just now, and a few more interesting lenses on the way...I don't know, but I think it might just be that Ricoh-Pentax, with their steady-as-she-goes approach, is doing this the right way.

Is it only in middle-age that I've become a contrarian? Sometimes I think I love Pentax simply because almost everybody else uses Canikony (at least, those that own a real camera at all).

I have very little Canon gear (couple of compacts). Pentax and Olympus are my main shooters (both marginal brands, one now possibly being carved up). The most mainstream I have is a Panasonic GX9 and a couple of Panasonic lenses (also on the margins due to simply being micro four thirds - if various influencers are correct).

If Pentax was to miraculously become the market leader, would I have to pick another brand to avoid feeling like one of a gazillion sheep? Maybe it would be Nikon!

No...I do love my Pentax gear....and those old 50mm lenses have such nice Toneh!

Regarding the camera 'arms race', as has been touched on a little here, I wonder if/when it might slow down for digital cameras. Does an excellent, high quality DSLR really need a replacement in a couple of years? At what point, in terms of processing and sensor, do we reach a point where cameras are pretty damn good already, and any further improvements are very small (and perhaps unnecessary...after all, in terms of megapixels, eventually diffraction renders any improvement irrelevant - not sure how much is to be gained in dynamic range though).

I keep thinking of mechanical film cameras, such as the LX, in production for more than a decade. This at least gives camera manufacturers an extended period for recouping R&D.

In Pentax, I still see a little of this. They don't seem to engage in trying to pump out new bodies every year. Maybe this is the way....and I hope that in this, Ricoh./Pentax will remain because they're not trying to race everybody else.

Really tempted to get an Olympus 0M-D M-M1X kit.

Agree...I watch the used prices of this gear pretty closely. For the 12-40 pro, in Australia you'd be looking at around the $500 mark (~USD340 or so?).

In case anybody is interested - for the other bits, used eBay prices are roughly (Aussie dollars):

E-M1X - $2,300
300 pro - $2,200
40-150 pro with 1.4 convertor - $1,000
7-14 pro - $900

About AUD6,400 (USD4,300 - ish). That's secondhand, so I think that Olympus deal is pretty good really.

Not sure what these used prices are like in other markets, but those are my observations from Oz eBay. I don't have an E-M1 of any kind myself, but the MK ii seems to be selling for around AUD1k (with very low shot count), and the Mk iii is not particularly well available used.

You can do better or worse of course. I got my 40-150 and 7-14 for less than those estimates, and my 12-40 for a steal with another camera body. The E-M1X doesn't come up that frequently, and the prices people want vary wildly. The 300 pro is very rare secondhand, and I can only recall seeing one sell for low AUD2k. Another 300 pro was listed just this past week at AUD2,800, and ended without a bid.

My observations are based on those I've seen go the full course and sell at auction.

I do love these lenses. Beautifully made and optics that I suspect go way beyond the abilities of the M4/3 sensors. I really would like the 300mm, and I think I'll still try to snag one in the coming 12 months (plus an E-M1 Mk ii or Mk iii). I will not bother trying to get an equivalent lens for my K-1, but on the M4/3 bodies it seems to make a lot of sense!

I was struggling to find it today too. Still there, but 'Backorder - No Stock'... Pentax-D FA* 85mm f/1.4 ED SDM AW W/C 22890 | Ricoh Australia

Not sure then when the next shipment will be. Presume it means that the July shipment is well and truly sold out though.

Lot of bang for buck in that lens.

I've found the prices to be a bit random. Most items seem to be a little cheaper direct through CRK at the moment, though I found some exceptions. Keep an eye on Amazon too, as DCX is selling there now too (K-1 battery grip is cheaper there).

Problem with eBay is that, on all the higher priced items, you're often capped at a $300 saving. Of course the 100mm doesn't hit that. Paid $559.20 for mine via eBay DCX using a code in 2018. Amazing lens at that price!

Probably in September.

Excellent observation though. For here on I am going to express the discounts I've received in terms of importing from the US!

Ah yes...I meant to comment on this. I do remember being confused about whether or not the battery grip included the large camera grip as well. At the time, it was something like you described - it was implied in one part of the product page but not another. I ordered anyway, and was happy to find that the large grip was indeed provided.

If recall correctly, the purchase of a KP in some other markets includes all three camera grips. Maybe Pentax does ship the battery grips without the large grip in some markets because of this.

If they notice, then you clearly don't have enough camera gear. :)

I loved the grip on my KP.

Bought my battery grip this time last year, and it came with the Large grip included. I personally found that the portrait orientation felt more comfortable in my hand than the landscape orientation (the vertical part of the grip was better moulded for my hand).

The KP is still not all that big a camera even with the grip added. The advantage of the added battery life does, I think, make it particularly worthwhile on the KP. I found that I was running out of battery frequently without it, but with the larger battery in the grip it took heaps of shots before needing a recharge (I already had these from my K-5 ii and K-01).

But I don't think grips are for everybody. I came to like the KP in my hand both with and without battery grip eventually (hated it at first because the K-5ii felt so much better in my hand). I'm sort of sad that I let my KP go, but I couldn't afford to hang onto it and buy a K-1 ii! Maybe I'll pick up another one some day - it seems to me that it might eventually become a bit of a classic.

Incidentally, the K-1 grip can be had from B&H right now, imported to Oz for a smidge over $270. CRK has it also for $319 (via DCXpert on Amazon).

Funny...I was just thinking this today, that I seem to see a contributions from other Australians at a level disproportionate to our population.

And yet, I don't know what store stocks Pentax where I live. I did buy my K100Ds from a retail store back in 2007 or so (JB Hi-Fi). While today they have an illuminated PENTAX sign above their shelves, there is not a K-camera to be seen amongst their stock. I expect they can still be purchased on special order, but why bother.

CRK has a long relationship with Pentax through. I am glad that we can buy the Pentax gear so cheaply from them (not much in the way of an Australia-tax as far as I can tell). It is a shame they're not in more stores if only to increase the profile of Pentax a bit, but I'm happy to order online and otherwise to buy used gear.

Most everybody I know uses Canikony (well, those who have 'proper' cameras at all), excepting some close friends who have Pentax.

The fact that Pentax is still around after changing hands a couple of times gives me hope that Olympus will stay for a while (yes, I am in two camera systems, and have bravely gone with both Pentax AND Olympus)! Unfortunately though, Olympus has not been sold to another company in the imaging business...we'll see in time what happens.

Ahhh...but now, if eBay has a 20% off that includes DCXPERT...well then, the goal has been reached.

Granted, the DCXPERT stuff is mostly not quite as cheap as directly through CRK, but it ticks the 20% off box!

Unfortunately, 20% is rare nowadays on eBay too, and often comes with a $300 cap or some such thing.

Shouldn't the 150-450 be part of that budget then?! I'd have thought that was the whole point ;)
