Ummmm no to the second person... However I do have a the Pentax 201 and 200 flash not sure what the first letter / number combo is. I donít have a monopod but do have a couple tripods. I was trying to keep this informal and am not a tripod guy but can sure bring them.

Absolutely I was planning on using the 50 for most but was wondering if the 70-200 belonged in the bag since... I am fully willing to walk to get the ďzoomĒ I want.

Good idea, I will do some thin DOF shots but will stop down the lens a little bit to ensure both are in focus.

...So I have an opportunity to do a favor for my sister and her significant other... They have been going for a while and I offered to take some photos of them.

I have no studio nor do I have any professional lighting equipment... Unless you consider my two low end Pentax flashes lighting equipment.

I am planning weather depending going next weekend out and about to take the photos. I know the magic hour in the morning and evening are nice times for landscape and even wildlife for awesome side lighting... This I think holds true for portraits or is overcast better? Any advice on times of day or lighting conditions?

I have three or four different spots in mind for these photos already which will give me the backgrounds I am seeking. My plan was to take the K1 II with my D FA * 50 and go after it. I could use my D FA * 70-200 but my arms will fall off most likely after hand holding it for a few hundred frames. Am looking at this right the fat 50 with the K1 II?

Also should I try to use the 1.4 for the bokeh or should I stop down to 2 or 2.8 - I donít want one face in focus and the other not. I have a pretty good understanding of the paper thin DOF you have - I just donít want them or myself to be disappointed. I know for one person I have been successful using 1.4 with my prior DA * 55 that now belongs to my pa.

I know this does depend on how close you are to your subjects for the DOF at 1.4 too but when just doing a single portrait I lock in on the eyes and for example the ears at 1.4 look a little soft which is nice... With sharp eyes of course. Donít mean to ramble, just want to do this right so please advise.

Donít worry these will be free so I am not taking money for my work maybe a dinner and a beer though.

Pentax K1 or Pentax K1 Mark ii

Well... If you are going to go big you ought to consider the MK. II if your budget allows it. However if you are tight on cash the original K1 is no slouch either. I went MK. II when I bought mine only for the larger ISO range and hand held pixel shift option.

Advice on a possible new setup

The KP is an awesome camera, the 16-85 is a truly awesome lens as well. Really provides Star lens quality just minus the fast part as it is no F2.8.

For hiking I would suggest the 55-300 either version I have the non-PLM HD version but PLM will focus faster. Those two lenses with the KP would get you off to a great start.

All good advice. Thanks for reminding us what really matters. Speaking of new kit I better get out and enjoy the K1 Mark II with the D FA * 50mm.

ephotozine review of the DFA* 50 F1.4

This was a pretty interesting review... I made the mistake of buying the new fat fifty with all crop bodies... Said wow this thing is stupid good and decided a couple months later to get a K1 II for the fat fifty.

Honestly this lens renders so incredibly awesome... The images appear almost 3D, I have been shooting between 1.4 and 2.8 with an occasional stop down to 4. This thing can do landscapes wide open or stopped down a tad to like 2 or 2.8 it is incredible.

Planning on doing some couples photos for my sister and her boyfriend soon. Actually looking forward to the results will be the K1 II with this lens only.

Why Do YOU Stay With Pentax?

Considering I have only built my kit up in the last two years... I would certainly go Pentax again. I really wouldnít do any purchase differently... Except I would have passed on the awesome DA 55 * that I gifted in nearly new condition to my dad - upon arrival of the more exceptional D FA 50 *.

I always thought in the back of my head glass hovering around the 1,000 dollar mark or more has to be FF ready. It was one reason the D FA 70-200 was purchased over the DA 60-250 and that I embraced the DA 300 along with the D FA 50...

It made jumping to a K1 II with the D FA 28-105 a great opportunity. The main reason I went Pentax was because of my fathers past with them. I grew up around ME Supers, K1000ís and Program Pluses. I like to beat to my own drummer, and Pentax isnít a mainstream brand. Plus they have weather sealing and typically provide a strong value of proposition in the products they build.

So the K1-II came in and it is a very nice camera... It does feel even without the battery grip absolutely massive with the DFA 50 on it. However it will be an awesome pairing and will enjoy the well balanced DFA 28-105 as well.

Great idea. I went with 64gb for the K1 II as the 32gb cards are what I use on my K3 II and KP.

Both are incredible pieces of glass. I ultimately went DA * 300 because of the extra reach... 200mm on a full frame or even crop really isnít that far out. If you want 2.8 at 200 might I suggest the extremely competent D FA * 70-200 F2.8? That is what I ended up doing and bought the 300 for the extra reach thus ending up with the best of both worlds.

Very true... I would love to collect old cars however the budget and storage would be a major issue. Heck for what I have invested in camera gear would only be one world class paint job on a classic automobile.

Yes, both DA * 200 F 2.8 and DA * 300 F 4 cover the full frame image circle.

Funny you mention hard drive space. I have a networked 4TB setup with RAID so no worries, well at least not yet. However a next year project is going to 8TB running RAID.

However, I am not good at combing through images and will commonly shoot 500 frames a day when traveling. I ordered two 64 gig cards to get me started. I am very much so looking forward to this addition to my kit.

I am kind of fearful of that actually.

Sorry for bringing this back from the dead... However I have made up my mind...

I am going with the K1-II kitted with a DFA 28-105 and am adding a battery grip along with the inexpensive AF201FG flash so I have a bounce flash. As currently I only have the AF200FG.

I am done sitting on the fence about the next crop flagship. My KP is an awesome crop camera and will last a long time as will my K3-II. Each have under 10K shutter releases. I will have four great full frame lenses plus all my excellent Limited crop kit - along with a few more.

Full frame here I come!

So after a full week in the Canadian Rockies, I saw one fellow Pentax user...

A white KR or KX with the matching white 18-55 kit lens. Other than that it was my dad sporting his K3 II and myself with my KP.

So last summer on holiday, I saw more in Washington State than I did this year.

Saw lots of crop Nikon entry level D3XXX crap, a few higher end crop bodies and a little full frame. Saw a lot of low end Rebel crap from Canon too and a few high end full frame. Also a few Sonys, a few Panasonicís and a very rare Fuji all MILC jobs but larger cameras still dominated by a mirror/optical view finder. Did see handful of high end point and shots. Oh and plenty of phones.

Most popular lens kit 18-55 (approximately) and 70-300 (approximately). The DSLR was the bulk of the cameras if people werenít using smart phones.

Would appear the DSLR is alive and well.

Best Portrait Lens? Budget: $600

Love the DFA * 50, it is like the DA * 55 only for FF and then some. If you donít plan on going FF and sticking to crop at less than half the cost the DA * 55 fits the bill of a portrait lens perfectly... In fact some of my favorite shots have been with that lens.

So... Yes, plenty of us can help spend your money. Might I suggest a new K70 with the 18-55 kit lens? I know that tallies up 150 over budget at 650 but the K70 is an awesome crop body and the 18-55 punches above its weight for a kit lens.

My dad and I have shot some awesome photos with K10D/K100D and the 1st generation 18-55ís.

Been shooting with my 20-40 as my primary lens recently in the Canadian Rockies... When attached to the KP admittedly with a battery grip it balances nicely on the camera and isnít a horse for size. FWIW it is my walk around lens on my KP, only has come off for the 15, 70-200 and 300 during the trip. This thing just works and has a incredible performance to size ratio plus is 2.8 at 20mm, which is nice.
