Pentax is there to stay, Mr Kawauchi reassures

It's not as big and heavy as you might think. It's about 225g lighter than a D700. I've barely put it down in two days and I'm not interviewing sherpas yet. Heck, I haven't even gotten around to installing the strap.

I think it's now safe to say that Pentax will be along any day now with their FF counterpart since I invested in an alternative.

I guess it's hard once one looses faith to jump back in. If I could go to a shop and try one out, maybe I could feel more comfortable.

As far as calibrating every time I use it is concerned, I don't want to have to spend the time checking the calibration of 3-4 lenses I'll probably use that day. The time is better spent thinking of the artistic aspects of the shoot. I shouldn't have to worry about the equipment.

As one who uses a Pentax K5 in the studio, I can confirm that after exchanging the camera twice and installing all FW updates, the camera still has a tendency to miss focus under tungsten modeling lights. So, you calibrate all of your best lenses one evening ony to find in the morning, just before a shoot, that the calibration has shifter because you now have a mix of tungsten and natural light.

So I switched all of my modeling lights to CFLs and had to give up on tracking the flash output. That helped to stabilize the focus problem quite a bit, but I still have occasions where I think I got the perfect shot and go to do a little retouching and find that, although I focused on the eyes, they are not in focus.

Now, why have I put up with the bad AF performance for so long? Good question. I never had these problems prior to the K5 and kept believing that there would be a FW fix that would make the AF as reliable as my old K100DS was. Sure it was slow, but it rarely missed focus if it locked. So I have a nice collection of quality glass and a camera body that doesn't focus reliably or at least as reliably as my several generations back K100DS.

So the quandary becomes do I stay with Pentax and try a K5II and hope things get better? I'm one that has also been holding my breath waiting for a FF camera from Pentax. Nothing after all of these years and nothing to tell me I should continue to be patient and wait. So I've also been looking at the D600 to use in the studio.

I can fully understand Ben's situation and the choice he made. I may be making the same decision soon.

I have a nice tax refund on the way. Enough to buy a D800 or a D600 with one nice lens. I'd rather to give the money to Pentax. So, Pentax, if you're listening, give me some glimmer of hope before I buy into Nikon:)

Sure, but what if the reason that we can't get a FF camera is that they can't overcome the technical difficulties related to making it work with a FF sensor. (I'm not sure this is the case as Sony did it) I'd rather have a FF camera w/o SR now than not having one at all or waiting 2 or more years to get one.

At this point, all we can do is agree to disagree.

I'm not sure where he plans to find those that have left the brand. Maybe he can just make noet of the Pentax users that are wanting a FF camera, wait a few months and then contact them. :)

Pentax Exec VP says he's never spoken to Q user!!

Ok, let me try again. The first paragraph summarizes as follows: Almost everyone that he talked to said no full frame is needed, we like what you're doing already.

The second paragraph summary is that the above agrees wit their internal research and that it was rewarding that it matched. He again go on to say that Pentaxians just want them to keep doing what they are doing. that Pentax should "start paying attention to—continue paying attention to—the camera the way it is."

I'm not sure how anyone can read that and find anything encouraging about the future of a full frame camera. Pentaxians don't want one, just keep doing what you are doing and Pentax states that that's the way they see it as well.

I'll concede that Mr. Malcolm is just an employee and Pentax Americas and doesn't have any direct influence on product development. However, the numbers and research that he feeds back to Japan can have an impact on the eventual release of a FF camera. Pentax Americas to Pentax Japan "No FF to be sold in this market."

Am I being overly pessimistic. Maybe. Has this interview given me any reason to be optimistic? No.

I don't thin I was being selective in my quoting. I took two consecutive sentences. OTOH, the entire quote doesn't change anything. The paragraph starts and concludes with references to FF and that it's not needed. The next paragraph stated that it matches their internal research. I think it;s pretty clear.

Again, you might see it differently. Perhaps, if many of us are taking things the wrong way, Mr Malcolm could always revise and extend his remarks to make the intent clear.

What policy? That Pentax does not see the need to introduce a FF camera and that's backed up by the feedback from users.

If that's the way you choose to interpret it. However, I don't see it that way.

" Maybe somebody needs full frame, but itís not for me."

"Right, so this is kind of consistent with a lot of the research that weíve done internally and itís a little bit rewarding, and I guess thatís my big surprise."

In context, he is saying that it's rewarding that their internal research is consistant with Pentaxians not wanting/needing a full frame camera.

This is exactly what I was going to say. On it's own, the statement that the Pentaxians she spoke to don't want/need FF, but add to it that hes stated that it matches their internal research and that it was rewarding makes the case that at least Pentax PRAC is telling Japan that there is no need for FF i this market.

I'd be more than happy with the features of the K-5II (or basic K5 with AF improvements) with a full frame sensor from the D600. I know I don't need more functionality than exists in K5. I don't think it would be that hard to accomplish. It would need a new housing and if SR is a real technical problem, drop it in the first model. Just do something and let us FF buyers know it's coming and when so we don't jump ship.

That statement that Pentax users don't want or need a full frame camera on it's own isn't what bothers me the most it's the follow up that" this is kind of consistent with a lot of the research that weíve done internally and itís a little bit rewarding..."

So Pentax's own research is in line with the view that an FF camera is not needed or at least net a priority. Even assuming that it's just Pentax Americas research, that being fed back to headquarters can effect the outcome of any decision to launch such a camera into the marketplace.

An interview with Pentax Executive Vice President Jim Malcolm

I have 18 lenses, 4 Pentax DSLRs and 3 compatible flash units. Already made up my mind? I've been trying very patiently to find a reason to stay with Pentax, not to jump ship. Pentax's lack of vision and upgrade path has been apparent for some time, but I have stuck by them hoping that they would soon provide an upgrade path from APS-C to Full Frame.

The comments I want to hear is something along the lines of "we hear the Pentax enthusiasts clamoring for a full frame camera and we intend to compete in that market." Not, as a follow up to a few interviewed users saying that they didn't need a full frame that "so this is kind of consistent with a lot of the research that weíve done internally and itís a little bit rewarding..." That comment basically throws cold water on those of us who have stuck by Pentax patiently waiting for a full frame DSLR. It's almost like he's saying to us that Pentax has no plans to provide a FF camera, so just like what we offer or just move along, because our internal research says that no one really need a full frame camera, especially from Pentax.

My mind was set to stick with Pentax, but this interview placed serious doubt in my mind that a full frame DSLR is coming at all, rather than coming in due time. That's the way I read his comments.

The interview is telling me that I should not wait any longer for a full frame Pentax camera. Instead, I should begin my migration to another system (most likely Nikon). I've been holding off on making that move since it seemed inevitable that Pentax would join the FF market in due time. My timetable for waiting for Pentax was that I needed something by Fall of this year or 1st quarter of 2014 at the latest. I'd love to have one now.

Having handled the D800 & D600 and falling in love with the big bright viewfinder and reading where Pentax is heading, I believe that I will begin my exit from Pentax almost immediately. After 33 years with Pentax, I'm saddened by the prospect of changing systems, but waiting no longer seems to be an option.

Initially, I will buy into the Nikon FX system for my business needs and continue to use my K5 and stash of lenses for hobby use. In the long run, however, I will sell off my lenses and convert everything over to Nikon.

I just want them to at least match the Nikon D600 and do it soon. I handled one the other day and I really loved it. That big, bright VF was a dream. If no Pentax FF by Christmas I'll be seriously considering a switch to Nikon.

+1 I'm in the same boat, although I don't normally post a lot about it. This time next year I will be faced with the decision of whether to stay with Pentax, meaning they have a FF body, or moving on to Nikon. No whining, just a fact.
