The most important question - K-30 has the same BF/FF problems like K-5?

My k30 definitely has FF issues. my kit needs -8, my 40mm limited needs -4, and my Tamron 90mm needs -7 and is now floating. I am about to send it in, because I am really really tired of messing with the AF tuning. The lenses work OK for a while, then start to go unfocused again. Even when they work well, clear shots are not the norm. Gotta take it back in for testing/exchange...

Hi,

is it submission 1 OR 2, or does one have to do both? Probably in there, but it is late and can hardly focus anymore!
Thanks

You can change the parameters so that the camera has no dust removal at startup or shut down, or one or the other, or both. I keep it at both, but default is neither (at least on mine it was).

Have fun with your camera :)

Also note that the shutter will make noises if you are using manual focus on a telephoto lens like the Tamron 90mm

RaW + DNGs altered at import in LR

Thanks guys,

I have windows 7 - 64bit with LR 4.1 (still on test version, but will definitely be buying it) and using the k30. I am not sure how to separte the JPEG and RAW or keep them together, but it only shows the DNG file in LR when I import it ( just double checked, no presets on import either). The jpeg is on the drive, and not displayed in LR, I have to go in and view it separately, I believe this is how you have it amoringello? I have just tried another import, and again, the two are identical without any editing at all...Irfanview can view both dng and jpeg and the RAW is definitely coming in edited...presets for JPEG on camera are only lens correction and auto NR at high isos with natural colors selected. Would that make the RAW processed? I need to do more testing, unfortunately, we have company over so no time to do it today...

@Tom-I recently read that the monochrome conversion only affects JPEG, and raw remains in color, no?

EDIT- think I got it, the default setting for imports of DNG files in LR is to treat it as one picture with the JPEG, hence the processing? What a dumb default! After changing it, there is definitely a difference in the two, and both are displayed in LR...

Cheers,
TJWest

ok, I am new to RAW processing, AND LR, what am I doing wrong?

When I shoot RAW only, the images are just that, raw and needing editing, but when I shoot RAW + the DNG file in LR is identical to the JPEG image, and resetting it does nothing...could someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? There is no comparison possible as they both have been processed...

Thanks in advance!

I almost got that lens, but I opted for the tamron 90mm instead and am happy as hell with it, I am sure you will love your pentax macro too! By too sharp, I think he means, at wide open, the depth of field is RAZOR thin...takes some experimenting to get just right :) Have fun!

I thought it would be much better or more useful than it is TBH, I do not use it at all, as I find the LV mode just annoying after using such a great Viewfinder.

He is not talking about the instant review, I believe, he is talking about the fact that the illuminated screen makes it very difficult to use the viewfinder at night, thanks LeDave for the info on how to turn that off! Though it is INFO 2x and then scroll 2x to the right to turn off the display.

Hmm, I have been experimenting with the interval shooting as well, and have done 250 odd shots with no issues, but just during the day. How long is your exposure time? The only few times I have shot at night, it took a pretty long time to write the 5 to 20 second shot to the card (class 10), which may be eating up the battery?

Hi,

was at a tournament today and wanted to post some shots from the K30 with the Tamron 90mm. The second one is a crop of the last one. The link to flickr page with the full size photos is below. Enjoy!

Exchange the body?

It looks like it only goes to -10, but that would mean -20 if this is true? In that case, there is no reason to send it back, I just need to keep fiddling with the lenses. I will look into this, thanks everyone for the input ant tips.

@Edgar, I have seen your post-calibration pics, that is definitely worth a try!

My tripod is still packed in a box as we are in the middle of a move, but I made sure the shutter speed was fast enough to compensate. It is maybe not a reliable test but until I find that damn tripod it is the best I can do. The lenses are just annoying me in the field with their inconsistency, and I wanted to try something.

There are way too few keepers in the field in terms of sharpness. The kit lens is hit or miss on sharpness. At -8, it seems to be a bit better, gives me basically the results I expect from such a cheap lens.

The 35mm 2.4 is mostly soft, and have tried extensive testing with -1 to -7. Still very miss, with a few hits though. I expect misses on AF, but not at that rate on a prime. Even the infinity shots come out blurry lots of times. I am going insane trying to dial it in right.

The Tamron is my anchor. it took also -7 on the AF adjustment, but man it is sharp as a tack almost every time, and if the focus is off, it is because I moved while it was at 1:1. That is what I would expect from the 35mm too. From the 35mm I am getting about 10% sharp. I just don't trust it.

Camera? Or Kit and 35mm lens?

Edit- I did try Rice High's blog method of fixing the focus issues and ended up at -8 on the kit, -7 on the Tamron and -4 on the 35mm (using a pencil to mark it). The kit and the Tamron seem pretty dialed in, but still not happy with the 35 though...more tests to do I guess, but am getting rather sick of trying to get it right.

thanks for the help

As accurate as my MCGyver method is I guess...? Note, even the "sharp" part is not as sharp as I would expect it to be...

Doesn't make sense, in the EU they launched it with the 18-55 WR kit lens, which is what I went for. Stupid not to do that in the US.

Hi all,

I have had my k30 for a week and have taken a couple thousand photos with it, mostly very pleased. I was wondering though, the body has FF issues, as each of my three lenses have needed a -7 adjustment to start taking clear pics. Would you send the camera back? I mean, it works, but the max is 10, so that doesn't give me much leeway on the FF side of things. Would you consider it faulty?

Thanks in advance,

TJWest

It could be that your lens needed a fine AF adjustment as did mine. I was quite frustrated the first few days as the pictures just seemed blurry and off...but now that I have the FF issue dialed in on the camera, the pictures are looking sharp! I jerry rigged a playing card and a measuring stick at a 45 angle to measure it. Worked a charm.

I also recommend playing with the AF modes, and metering, etc... my 18-55 kit was fast enough to get clear shots of my son while swinging on a swing...not every shot a keeper, but more than I expected, and the 18-55 WR is supposed to be fairly slow...

Cheers,
TJW
