I have set I've been using for awhile. They are Hoya brand and are +1, +2, and +3. I stack all three onto a Pentax A 50mm f2. Here's an example taken this month in the SIC. Click on the photo and check the f stop.

Macro Hoya Close Up Filters

I think a close up filter is a good idea, it saves opening up the camera and fitting a macro or close focus lens. I bought some second hand and have not used them much as I have dedicated macro lenses as well as a couple of Tamron Zooms that close focus but I did try one out on an old Sigma 24-70mm that has a reputation for being pretty bad and the images seemed no worse (to me) than the lens naked. A better zoom might show up deficiencies but it is a low cost option that could be tried.

Canon - yes them! - has a very good two-page discussion that I often refer to on close-up lenses and such lenses vs. extension tubes:

Close-up lenses - Canon Professional Network

In particular, you should note 1) the difference between two- and one element lenses as well quality- as price wise and 2) that close-up lenses are best for the longer focal lengths (such as the DA 18-135 at 135mm) while extension tubes are better for the shorter focal lengths and no good for long focal lengths.

On page 2 (link above) you also find a table on max. reproduction ratios with a +4D or a +2D close-up lens on lenses of various focal lenghts. For a 135mm lens you may expect a 'magnification' of some 0.5X with a +4D lens and some 0.3X with a +2D lens.

Hoya does make two-element achromatic close-up lenses. They are not dirt cheap but should serve your purpose well, or so I believe.

Sticky: The EXCLUSIVE GALLERY ("PEG") at PentaxForums

I think it reflects highly on your character that you can separate the final status of the submitted image from the asinine comments from one judge. It's welcome to see some graciousness.

If you want more thoughtful comments on your blackbird photo than from the brief feedback via the PEG process, consider posting it in the photo critique section. I will gladly expand on the couple of lines I offered. I think too many judges are saving their "feedback" for the PEG process, when the critique forum provides more value word-for-word for both the artist and the greater community--and since it is not anonymous, for the critic as well.

Regarding nasty feedback via the PEG process, sadly not all adults can handle the "freedom" of anonymity. After I got a few from a photo of mine, I just savored the very few useful ones and figured it was better than zero feedback. I am tempted to campaign for an end to judge anonymity as it would ensure more accountability--OTOH--a part of me really dislikes giving that much leverage to one or two know-nothings.

I finally got out of the pool and off the beach and dusted off the XZ-1. After looking over all the excellent entries i finally managed to shoot something worthwhile. Well, the old Optio S has been resurrected so I decided to use it to take a picture of an even older camera of mine. This particular camera, a Brownie Automatic from the early 1900's, belonged to my grandmother, who was also a Shutterbug. Thanks to Grandma I have a great many B&W negatives from that time. I have used this 120 roll film camera myself on a number of occasions.

Liked the bnw treatment Bart did also. Heres my take. Run thru Nik Silver Efex and then a tiltshift camera phone program with contrast and brightness adjusted

Nice idea Anton!

I'm far from a photoshop wizard - I don't even have it but I thought I'd give it a try.

Strangely enough, I came up with a B&W conversion. :)

Imported in LR and opened in Silver Efex.
Starting from a preset, I added some contrast and a red filter.
Then I used a film emulation Kodak Plus-X 125PX Pro.
Added slight Sepia toning.
Cropped in LR, added some clarity and vibrance and lifted the black clippings.
I left the face of the sphinx somewhat shaded to preserve the mystery ;)

Actually, I had some variants but I picked this one.

Almost a square crop. To be on the safe side, I set the short side to 768 rather than the long side to 1024

Chemtest - great entry.

Pentax Q, 01 8.5mm pentax prime, closeup filter. Not sure how he got to this spot, the door is very slick. The side wall is rough but he would have to had jumped a molding.

thanks

I found this really difficult. I don't go "Wow" easily and especially not about anything I did.

Anyway, I thought let me just pick 3 pictures I really like.
You might remember from the previous contest, I went to Paris for work but I sneaked out an evening to take a little stroll. These are all from that time.

#3 is of the statue in front of our town hall. I usually never go for something over the top, but tried some options in the newest update of Picasa 3, not sure about this one, might replace it. Taken with my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P72, 3.2mp

This one is gonna be quite errr... special.
When I wrote my first post, I was browsing through my archive and decided my idea (and the picture) wasn't good enough.
This is dark. This is a dark, dark but tasteful beer.
