I'm sure he'll add it to the main post later, but in the meantime for people wondering.

I've never bought from MPB before but I am a regular scanning their Pentax stock :)

*Note the listing and description says HD DA but the picture shows the SMC version. I'm not sure which is accurate. I don't know if they use actual pictures of the item.

Bicycling with Long Lens

I was just writing up a response and saw this :)

I ride with a camera almost everyday, mostly on dirt trails like Sidney Porter mentioned. I've found different things that work with different camera setups. With a smaller camera, I found I can't beat peak designs capture clip for quick access. No opening a bag or anything, just stop (or slow down ) the bike and take a picture. For slightly larger setups a sling bag or camera backpack with side access works great for fast access. Both of these work fine for road or well packed dirt. If you're planning on mountain biking sort of stuff (not sure if you are) then a proper biking backpack with an insert works great. I use an osprey raptor 14. It hugs my body and eliminates almost all bouncing even on very bumpy terrain.

With my DA* 300mm specifically I have tried two bags. The think tank digital holster 30 (mentioned above) and the lowepro top loader pro 75 AW II. Both can be worn as a sling or as a chest mount. The think tank is much slimmer for approximately the same inner dimensions, so it works better as an insert for a biking backpack. The lowepro toploader is larger so it's a tighter fit, but has way more features as a standalone bag.

I have not tried it, but I believe chest mounting either of those two (or something similar) would work just fine biking on non rough surfaces. That would allow that faster access you desire. I know this method is popular with skiers I've watched on documentaries.

Through all the variations I've tried I've found it really is a game of quick access vs most stable/non-moving. For the rougher places I go I found I just had to give up the fast access and go with a biking specific backpack for stability and little more crash proof. But for cycling around town or light trails then just about any method you like while hiking works fine biking.

I'm interested in what other people use as well.

Hope that was at least moderately helpful. If either of those two bags for the 300mm look useful to you I can provide pics with my camera and lens in them or anything else you're curious about.

Thanks.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax K-3 with Battery Grip and 18-55 Lens

Asking Price
500.00 USD

Item Location
San Antonio (United States)

Item Description
I am once again pairing down gear and decided to stick with my K10D as my APSC body. As much as I love the K-3, I really am enjoying the K-1 and it's not getting much use as-is. This is not the camera I bragged about getting snowed on with. That one was sold when I originally got my K-1 ;)

This camera was bought last year locally from a young man who got it from his grandfather. The young man decided he wanted a Fujifilm instead. The grandfather took very good care of his gear and it is in excellent shape. It practically looks brand new, with very little signs of use. I do not have the box but I have the manual I'll include.

13,107 Shutter Count

Includes:
Pentax K-3 body
Pentax 18-55mm lens (I'll include a cheap circular polarizer filter on it along with lens cap)
Pentax D-BG5 Battery grip with insert for AAs
(2) OEM Pentax Di-90 batteries
Everything else you see in the pic

$500 Shipped, insured, and covering PP fees anywhere in the US. For Canadians, PM me and I'll calculate your shipping. If it's just a bit more I'll just include it in the price.

I will consider partial trades. Particularly for:
Ricoh GW-3 Lens - $50? Not really sure on this one.
DA 70 2.4 - $175
DA 35 2.4 - $50
FA 31mm - straight across
FA 77mm - $400
Pentax F series lenses
50 1.7 - $60
135 2.8 - $150
28 2.8 - $150
etc

I'm into a lot of things included other camera brands. Particularly older digital cameras. If the price is right I will consider just about anything purely because I like to try things out :)

Let me know if you have any questions.

K70 or K1II for Astro (Milky Way Landscapes)

I don't know if this helps you, but I owned a Rokinon/samyang/bower (forget which one) 24mm 1.4 and shot astro with my K-1. It did have some issues wide open, but I wouldn't say terrible. At least my copy, because apparently that's an issue. Not sure how it compares to what he has. Certainly stopping down would be your best bet to clear up any issues. I ended up choosing to keep my Rokinon 14mm 2.8 instead mostly for focal length reasons. I liked getting more of the night sky in one shot. I felt like the light advantages weren't as big a deal for me since I've been moving more into stacking images and using astro tracer.

Here's an album with a few night shots with the 24mm 1.4 wide open on the K-1
Bower/samyang/rokinon 24mm 1.4 | Flickr

for comparison, here are two shots from the same location between the 24mm 1.4 wide open and the 14mm 2.8 wide open on the K-1. (Excuse the bad light painting).

Thank you for that. I see one on eBay now from Japan for $9k USD. It definitely seems like an inflated price because of volume on the market at any given time. I bet if 10 went up for sale all around the same time, we'd see the price drop quite a bit. Although the rarity of the lens would still drive a premium price. Interesting.

Fantastic picture! I know it's a lot of work out in the field, and then the same or more on the computer. Well done!

I bought the DA 300* for this (and wildlife of course). I have experience with Andromeda/Orion's nebula with my Samyang 135mm f/2, but wanted to try something more versatile for other uses. I am getting ready to try it out soon. In my preliminary tests in the backyard I was having a frustrating time focusing it. Do you use any sort of focusing aid like a bahtinov mask? Or any other technique tips for focusing you could pass on? Thanks in advance!

I have never seen this lens, or even heard about it. I can't imagine it's worth what they are asking ($3.8k!!), except for those extreme collectors. Not even in great condition... I wonder how they got their hands on it. Anyone got more info on it? The lens database entry here is pretty sparse.

It's listed on eBay as well, but at $4k. They always sell cheaper on their website than eBay because they don't have to pay the eBay fees.

Used Asahi Pentax 100mm f2 Takumar Lens 100/2 M42 Mount RARE in 'Good' condition

Ebay link (usually lasts longer after a sale, in case people want the pictures of the lens)

Some people may know I am an affiliate with UsedPhotoPro with my own website/YT channel. This is NOT an affiliate link, as that would be inappropriate on this website of course. Just wanted to clear that up. I do however recommend them. I have ordered several items from them this past year. They are very good about their pictures and descriptions. Everything I've ordered came as expected. Good company.

I still read through this thread almost everyday. Inspiring stuff everyone. It really helps me keep trying more things. I don't post often but I need to get back in the habit.

This morning I took the K10D attached with a DA* 300mm to the pond. I was pleased to find the AF holds up just fine. High ISO is a little tricky as always, but I think you'd agree it isn't "shot ruining" as purists might have you believe.

Happy snapping everyone :)

Just wanted to follow-up because I thought this was nice. All my items arrived today safely wrapped. Mine was a rather large order. Included in the box were four items labeled "gift", which I didn't notice at first and thought I had received the wrong order. According to the note on the order receipt they are four gift film bodies "for display". I am assuming they are non operable for one reason or another, but still pretty fun.

The Canon is pretty cool. I've never seen one like that.

Anyway, bummed they are going out of business! Packaging and service was great. Enjoying my new toys.

Just a heads up to anyone who ordered from them when this was posted over a week ago:

They reached out to me today to let me know something on my order was listed slightly incorrectly (wasn't a big deal, I appreciated their attention to detail.) They also mentioned they have been slammed with orders and behind, which is understandable. They said my order should go out early next week. I wasn't expecting any sooner because of the holidays and such, but I wanted to pass this on in case anyone was feeling antsy about no shipment update for over a week.

I'm excited for my stuff to come. Got some good stuff. Thanks again to the original poster.

I also am fairly clueless when it comes to flash photography. That's a good one. Good luck.

I have a laundry list of things, and realistically none of them will be year long goals but rather things I'll focus on for a month or so at a time. That works out better for me. One year-long thing though will be the switch back to B&W film. This year I did all color, but I'm itching to get back to B&W :) Another overall goal will be to take more photos. I don't have my total from this year on hand right now, but I think I could top it. Sometimes I went a week without taking a single photo. Seems like a shame.

I love these comics. Nice one

Yes, this is me  I am an expert lurker in the forums. You can most often find me in the marketplace trying to snag a deal on yet another old camera or perusing the 6/10 megapixel club threads. :p Thank you for your kind words :)

I hope people understood the point of the video. I do honestly think the K-3 III will be a remarkable camera. But I also know that in the excitement of new things it’s easy to forget how good the things we already have are. That doesn’t mean an upgrade won’t be warranted by some (and for Pentax’s profits, I hope so!) but sometimes the bickering over small features and pixel peep comparisons makes me worry about some photographers

Item for Sale
SMC Pentax DA 10-17mm Fisheye

Asking Price
230.00 USD

Item Location
San Antonio (United States)

Item Description
I bought this lens used a few months ago locally from a photographer giving up their Pentax kit. I was mostly interested in the other gear, but thought I'd give this one a go. After a few months I can say fisheye is not for me, at least not right now  Credit to all those photographers here on the fisheye thread that make it look easy.

The lens is in excellent condition with only light signs of us and some dust on the exterior. Interior is clean, and glass is free from blemish.

Price includes shipping and paypal fees.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I would trade straight across for a Pentax Limited 70mm 2.4 (if condition is good and everything)

Thanks

I was organizing my camera gear today and realized I still have this. Many interested parties, but no takers so far! I'm not in a hurry to sell as I do like this lens, it just doesn't get used much at all (clearly, since I went over a month without remembering I had it).

Opening up to trades for Pentax lenses or cameras/kits from other brands. I particularly like older gear. Trades have to be slightly in my favor, I do value cash more.

Thanks.

Some good ones already mentioned that I follow, but here's a few I haven't seen mentioned on this thread but definitely deserve to be checked out and supported:

John Bradford - Really good landscape/nature photography, some film stuff as well. He is shooting with a Pentax K-1 mostly right now.

Simon's Utak - Really a treasure trove of knowledge about vintage lenses. A lot on the Pentax lenses here. Beautiful images, wonderful presentation, lots of information. Really good one.

Geoff Moore - Takes you along on photography adventures, nature and landscape. Inspiring images and fun to learn some different techniques from another photographer.

Hello,

Putting out my feelers for the Pentax DA* 300mm f/4 lens. I've been after it a while now but just now squeezed enough money to purchase one. They don't seem very common on the second-hand market, however, and in my time looking I have only seen the Ricoh store refurbished one (didn't have funds ready) and one on eBay.

Anyway, if you happen to own this lens but are hoping to part with it, let me know :)

Thanks.

Asking Price
325.00 USD

Item Location

Item Description
Pentax HD DA 55-300mm - $200 shipped SOLD
I bought this second hand and it is in very good condition. I'm not sure how much the previous owner had actually used it, and if they had they babied it. I have used it outdoors for a few months now but never in rain. Some dust inside the lens, but the exterior looks almost untouched. Glass is clean other than the dust. Selling to put money towards a telephoto I can use better for astro too.

Pentax FA* 24mm f2 - $350 shipped $325 shipped
Bought off a fellow forum member a few years back. This has been a bucket-list, dream lens for a long time, but I could never justify it. Finally pulled the trigger when I had spare funds and have spent the last few months shooting with it. I'm happy to share more thoughts in detail about why I'm choosing not to keep it, but in short, I found for close-up shots it had wonderful rendition and character, but did not find it as versatile for landscapes/astro, which I was hoping to use it for as well. Hoping to make back most of what I paid, and I'll just count it as a rental ;)

Photos show condition well. Lots of scratches on the hood and body. Little screws in the hood also showing rust. Glass itself is squeaky clean. Autofocus works. Did not experience any issues other than setting my K-1 to +7 or so lens calibration. Though I have to do this with my K-1 with every lens so far, so starting to think it's my K-1.

Free with any purchase
This is random, but thought I'd throw these out there since they are not really worth listing on their own, but still might help you. If you want one or either, just let me know and I'll throw them in for no additional cost.

Freehands photography gloves SOLD- Worn maybe a dozen times before moving to Texas and not needing gloves :) These have a little magnet cap for the pointer finger and thumb so you can have those fingerless, or covered. Mens size large. Insulated, but I found they worked best for only moderately cold environments. -13 F in Idaho was too cold for these ;)

Vello P-TTL Cord for Pentax (OCS-P3) - Not sure if it works, though I have no reason to believe otherwise. Came in a kit of well taken care of gear. I don't have a flash so of no use to me.

Pentax Video Question
Posted By Snapppy
Replies: 4
Just some thoughts based on my current experience shooting Pentax video. All other cameras listed I have personally shot with or currently shoot with. These comments are all framed based on if I was in your shoes and asked to film a factory tour.

Summary:
Pentax video - soft and mushy, low bitrate, but advantage of nice lenses you may have, big sensor and aperture so potentially less noisy indoors. Also can get nice depth of field, though for a tour that's not really wanted. Autofocus is a bust in video, so I do all manual focus. For your sake, an ultra wide set to infinity would work, or just practice manual focusing. If you're not comfortable or you know you have places where you would be changing focus a lot, this might not work. Do not shoot interlaced, stick to 30p. Owning and shooting video with k5, k3, and k1, the k1 is slightly better than the rest. Maybe that's just been my perception because of depth of field I could get, but does seem a little better quality as well. The flip down screen works well to stabilize the body against your chest and hold low. The built-in stabilization is AMAZING for stationary handheld video, but bad if you are walking/panning. Not sure how long the battery lasts in straight shooting, but based on my usage I think the K-1 would last at least an hour.

Cell phone video - degrades quickly in lowlight, fixed focal length, but if a recent smartphone then sharp video and convenient. Auto-focus can be pretty good to very good on these as well. Some even have built-in stabilization, or as suggested, a sub $100 gimbal would do wonders here. Make sure you have a good working battery (I know some people wear it out pretty quick) or plug into external battery pack. Could very well be your best/cheapest option depending what phone you have.

GoPro video - Similar to phone, degrades quickly in low light, but sharp, high bitrates. Good angle for a tour. No worries about autofocus because it is fixed focus. Newer ones with built in stabilization are really nice. I have the 7 currently and really enjoy it, you can walk around and handhold no problem. I shoot mostly in 2.7k to avoid the crazy codecs of 4k, which unless you have a very recent (last two years) CPU and a beast of a computer, is not usable. Battery of my hero 7 shooting 2.7k 60fps lasts just over an hour of straight shooting.

Cheap cameras with good video quality: Used Panasonic GH3 ($200-$250)1080p quality was actually very good. Can adapt your current Pentax lenses, just keep in mind the 2x crop factor, so you would need a really wide Pentax lens to make that usable for tours, or buy a m4/3 wide lens. For a little more, the G7 ($350 used) is good, or for $200-300 panasonic has some super zooms like the FZ1000 that take great video, good autofocus, etc.

That was really informally written up, I am typing fast so I can get back to my kids (who are now screaming at me to pay attention), but wanted to chime in since I shoot a lot of video on my Pentax cameras and other cheap alternatives. Hope it helps somewhat.
