Which lens would you buy for those with AFA 1.7x? DA 300mm or 300* M

I would veer towards a F or later lens: versus the M* I would think contrast will be better with the later coatings and also autofocus is available when not using the converter.

Excellent seascape. The marching clouds give a strong sense of movement. A lot of careful post processing I suspect to manage the dynamic range.

Nothing much new here except Kodak (or rather whoever owns the trademark) has slapped their name on some 3rd party product of which we have seen various similar incarnations over the years.

Hi Sandy. Bought a 28-105 a few weeks back. Only taken a few shots since up near Mannum in what was so so light. Hopefully will get a few more shots in this Sunday. Have been using primes so far on my K-1. I'll be interested in your thoughts. My initial impressions are a little mixed as images seemed somewhat flat - not sure if it was the so so light of the initial shots or whether having using primes exclusively for a while now I've set my quality bar to quite a high level.

Wide angle Lens for K-1 (ie FF) that takes 52mm ND Filters

All of the M series up to short telephoto are 49mm filter threads so a cheap 49-52mm ring adapter would allow any of these to use 52mm filters. The M 28/3.5 I consider to be a good wide angle lens. And cheap too. The M20/4 is much dearer and, based on my copy, is not that sharp at infinity. It seems sharpest out to mid range. So good for some things but not ideal for landscapes in my view. Fine for sunsets etc where there is not a lot of detail as it does great colours but less suited for fine detail like distant landscapes. Other copies might be better but it is a scarce lens and pricy for what it is so I haven't been inclined to seek out a second copy.

Thoughts about a Solo Prime for a Trek

If I was forced to a single prime lens, I would go 35mm FF equivalent or thereabouts. On the K-1, the FA31 or 35 would both be good. On Aps-c, the DA21 would be the nearest equivalent. The FA24 is also of the right length for Aps-C but from what I read of its reviews, field curvature might be a frustration for landscape photography in terms of getting adequate corner sharpness unless well stopped down.

WR Travel Lens(es) For K1? Pentax-D FA 24-70mm Or Recommend Something Else?

I've got a shiny new DFA28-105 delivered this morning to be my travel lens. I tried both the 24-70 and the 28-105 on a pre-release K-1 in the Pentax Tokyo showroom last year and decided the 24-70 would get tiring after a full day of lugging it about. I mostly shoot at the wider end so not giving up too much in the way of aperture most of the time.

Poll: If only limited to one Pentax vintage lens series which would you choose ?

I haven't used this lens as much as I should have. For a while I thought it was faulty but the problem turned out to be a deteriorating UV filter on the lens. Once I took the filter off, the lens was fine. In fact the detail it can capture from a distance is quite impressive. Like all M lenses, it needs a little more work in post processing to bring out the best in the images captured.

I've used it only on APS-C so far. On APS-C, the M300/4 equates to 450mm which I agree puts it in the specialty use category.

I bought a K-1 late last year but really haven't had the time to run through the M family much at all on the K-1. Only used so far the M20/4 and a second copy of the M200/4 I picked up cheaply last Christmas. The second M200/4 has pleasantly surprised on FF. I think the APS-C crop pushes the M200/4 a little too hard on resolution - on FF it seems a lot happier. On either format it renders images nicely (provided focus is spot on). If focus is a little out, then fringing quickly kicks in. The M300/4 with its ED element is much better behaved in this respect.

I've been thinking of taking out a one year membership to the Adelaide Zoo. They have in addition to the city zoo, an open range zoo about 45 minutes out of the city - I suspect this is where longer lenses like the M300/4 will come into their own - provided animals stay still long enough to get focus sorted! I found swimming ducks with the M300 thoroughly frustrating. They seem to either be swimming towards me or away - neither is good for manual focussing of long telephotos!

This hasn't been a theoretical exercise for me. If you look at my signature block you can see what series I've gone with. All started with a M50/1.7 on my long dead ME Super carried over from film days and then a mild dose of LBA kicked in. Anyone got a cheap M2000 they dont want?

Check also if the Android/IOS LR puts limits on export sizing when not part of a CC subscription. What frustrates me is that without CC there is no syncing so you have to start all over again once back at your pc.

Help me trouble shoot my -DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED WR at 300mm

Zooms like the 55-300 used at maximum focal length tengs to reveal their weak link in their armour. The very long end generally is their poorest performance.

When I had my 55-300 working (a small drop of my camera bag seems to have disturbed the alignment of the internal elements), I spent considerable time getting the AF calibration right at the long end. It certainly helps as being slightly out of focus at 300mm noticably impacts performance. Also consider whether staying at 250mm or less is workable. The 55-300 holds performance reasonably well out to 250mm and then falls off after that. It is still pretty good overall for a consumer zoom at its price point.

You won't find a current model F2.8 lens at 300mm in Pentax mount and it will be damn big and heavy. The DA*300 is F4 but all users of this lens seem very happy from the comments I've read online on this forum.

JPEG files seem way too small after converting from Camera RAW

If it a plain blue sky and represents a relatively a large part of the image, then yes, the jpeg will be smaller than what you might expect from, say, a detailed landscape. All that homogeneous blue is capable of being heavily compressed as there is little detail within it to preserve.

K-1 Raw files?

Around 32-34 Mb per K-1 RAW file. So probably around 900 and a bit K-1 RAW files on a 32Gb SD card.

And after the images come off the SD, this larger file size starts to add up after a while, even on your PC/MAC photo repository. I've noticed the increase in the rate at which I fill my pc drive since I've had the K-1.

Re tduell comment above, I don't find the camera's file estimate all that accurate.
