It's 2020 and my K-3 still rocks

I purchased a K-3 1n 2013 shortly after debut. Still as good as when I bought it (except for cosmetically). The K-3II didn't show me anything I wanted or needed. The K-P went the wrong way for me leaving out too many features I liked on the K-3. Full frame appeals to me but not enough to make the switch. If the new APSC keeps the high end features and makes a big leap in AF and has flippy screen I might be interested. K-3 has been and still is a workhorse and excellent tool. Yep, still rocks in 2020.

16-50: Bad Idea?

I have 22 lenses and out of all of them the 18-135 gets the most use. I just keep coming back to it for many reasons. It is compact, light weight, quiet, focus is vey fast and accurate, zoom range is versatile, weather sealed and I"m satisfied with the the image quality. It really has a lot going for it and very little to complain about. I frequent the Boundary Waters and Quetico for 8-10 day canoe trips. My next trip will likely be K-3 +18-135 + polarizer (if I can resist adding DA15 or 10-17 and 55-300 PLM...LOL). My photography also tends to be secondary to a main activity (at times). I think you would be quite satisfied with 18-135. My 2 cents worth.

I'm very curious about this tripod. In fact inclined to buy one. Do you know if you will be reviewing aluminum or carbon fiber version? Look forward to your review.

No date memory in K-r. What card speed to use?

Thank you for this. I keep this K-r body as a backup and almost never use it. I have stored it without the main battery installed because it seemed to discharge slowly. This explanation makes sense, (hence main battery slowly discharging). I thought if this was an easy fix I would do it before I gift it to my daughter when I purchase K-1 ll or K-new. The repair is beyond what I am willing to attempt as my hands are not that steady and I don't have the tools.

---------- Post added 03-12-20 at 09:11 PM ----------

Anyone care to comment on card speed as asked in original post? Thanks.

No date memory in K-r. What card speed to use?

On start up my K-r asks for date and time to be entered. Every time I turn it off and back on again the entered data is lost and needs to be entered again. I'm assuming that there is an internal battery that is dead. Might there be any other potential cause? Is this an easy DYI fix? What kind of battery is it? How and where is it accessed? Through the bottom plate?

Also, what is max write speed for K-r? In other words what card do I want without going overkill? Sandisk Extreme Pro is what I use in my K-3. I think the one in the K-r is maybe 20 mbs but seems too slow.

Pentax Binoculars

I won a Pentax binoculars (early 90's I think). I bought a PZ10 and was entered into a contest with 3 prizes. I got 3rd prize which was the 8x24UCF Pentax binoculars. Honestly I'e never been impressed. I'm sure time and technology have made improvements. I got a pair of 10x42 Nikon Monarch Binoculars for Christmas yesterday (which I picked out). During selection process I wanted to hold them in my hands and put them to my eyes. No Pentax to be found in my area. Too bad, I would liked to have considered the brand. Been a loyal pentaxian for 40 years. The Monarch 10x42 I find very impressive especially for the price.

I've had both and they are excellent. The A*85 1.4 is my favorite MF lens. That said the 15-30 does seem to be a sensible choice for your application.

Help Please. Switching from Photos to Lightroom.

I use a MacBook Pro and have been using the Apple Photos software (OS High Sierra version 10.13.6). I intend to switch to Lightroom Classic CC as my main editing and organizing software. I'm not much of a digital guru and struggle at times to comprehend some things. My hard drive is nearly full (of digital photos). I plan to dump all these photos onto two external drives (one copy on each), clear the internal drive, then download Lightroom to my Mac and start learning and using it. I have edited most or many of my photos with Apple Photos. One question is will the edits be saved on the external drives or will it just be the original RAW image. Another question is; if the edits are saved can I still manipulate them in Lightroom.
When I edit in Photos I just click "Done" and my edit remains intact. I'm just not sure what happens when I move the files and approach them with another program. Hope these questions make sense. Thanks in advance for any help. Mike.

Beginner lens upgrade, DAL 55-300mm upgrade or else?

I had the DAL. Replaced it with WR when it came out. Didn't notice any difference, but it was WR as I wanted. Replaced WR with PLM when it came out for faster focus. The focus is lightening fast , nearly silent. and very accurate. Night and day difference. I was immediately surprised by an improvement in image quality as well. I love this lens. Well worth it.

My 100mm lenses: Do my M lenses hold up to the modern DFA's ?

Thank you for the comparison. I found this interesting because I have owned all of the primes above and will purchase the zoom when and if I go to K-1 (still using K-3). I had 2 M2.8, 1 M4, and 1 A2.8 (non macro). I decided to sell them all and replace with DFA 100wr thinking it would be a good replacement in 1 unit. I gained a stop (2.8) in macro + 1:1 magnification (w/o ext. tubes) + WR. I gave up manual aperture control and the buttery smooth manual focus. It was a good choice for me in the end, very satisfied with DFA. The M and A 100mm were excellent.

Somehow I thought a professional is one that "makes" money with a camera rather than "spends" money on one.

What's your favorite 2008-2013 APS-C Pentax DSLR and do you still use it?

Bought a K-r in 2011 then a K-3 in 2013. K-3 is my workhorse and K-r sits as a backup (wife uses on rare occasions). Love the K-3, image quality is excellent and I am so accustomed to using it that I have little desire to replace it. I have enough quality full frame lenses to make a kit with the K-1 (or K-1ii) but just don't think I really need it. Really the only things I wish the K-3 had is flippy screen and WiFi. I have considered KP but don't like small battery and single card slot. Am waiting to see APS-C flagship appear from Pentax, but if it omits much from K-3 I probably won't be interested.

Agreed. It was a gimmick and a pain. And the power zoom switch eventually fell off for no apparent reason. My least liked Pentax lens ever. I junked it. That said, I am still a happy Pentax user.

Which 300mm F* or DA*?

I'm pondering between the 300 F* and 300 DA*. I presently have the 300 A* (great lens) but want to move to autofocus. Also prefer tripod mount, so not FA*.

DA* 1) 1/2 stop faster. 2) WR. 3) Newer technology.
F* 1) Smaller (a little). 2) Smaller filter size. 3) Slightly better reviews.

Image quality? Does the F* have an edge over the DA*? I like DA* for WR, but F* seems to have a very stellar reputation. Does anyone have experience with both? Any other thoughts?

Pentax Modern AF Lenses VS. MF Older Lenses Shoot Out Which Is Better?

I recently got a K 55 1.8 and am very impressed indeed. Build quality is top notch, focus butter smooth but the images from it are what impressed the most. This lens is a great value in my opinion.
In the past I've had other K lenses (24 F2.8, 50 F4 Macro and 28 F2.0 come to mind) and they are (IMHO) worthy of a vote here. The 28 F2.0 is the one lens I truly regret ever selling.

1) Thank you for service to country. 2) God bless your family. 3) Great photographs. 4) The operating room is a reminder to me how blessed our country is (I had surgery five days ago). 5 ) The B&W photo does more for me. Draws my eye straight to his face (which seems more prominent in B&W) and speaks volumes by expression. 6) I love Pentax but your switch seems quite logical. It is just a set of tools selected for a job. Best of luck in your future.
