Those are not artifacts, but multiple Bayer mosaics on top of each other. Under ideal conditions they complement each other, making a picture with true RGB pixels, so demosaicing is not required / the mosaic is not visible (because it's no longer a mosaic).

K3II: Pixel Shift First Test

Tripod + no movement is required for pixel shift, so why would you shoot at anything other than ISO 100? Look at pixel shift as an ISO 25 option. Slower shutter, better resolution, less noise, better colors (but same DR). There are many Sony a6000 vs A7 (or even A7R) comparisons out in the wild, try looking at them at such a low resolution, I bet you won't notice the difference.

Anyway, here's the same scene wit Pixel Shift on and off. Even at fullscreen (1080p or higher depending on monitor) it's hard to see any difference. Zoom in to 100% and it's day and night. Looking at 25% or smaller, the image is already oversampled to RGB / pixel, so you won't see the ugliness of the Bayer sensor. The only difference is that now you can look at the image at 100% or print crazy big and still get pixel (or should I say dot :D) perfect images.

K3II: Pixel Shift First Test

Pixel shift is supposed to increase quality on the pixel level, from such low-res images most people couldn't tell the difference between a K3 and a 645Z. The file-size is probably smaller because it has less noise. Noise is random so you have to store each individual pixel separately, while you can use algorithms for repeating patterns (such as a wall). Just like ISO 800 files are bigger than ISO 100 files are. Dunno where those extra 48 million subpixels went though... As far as I know Bayer DNG's only store one color per pixel and the RAW converter has to demosaic the picture, so RGB DNG should be larger in size. Feel free to correct me if I said something silly :D

Questions re: K-3 II pixel shift and Astrotracer

It's the photographer's job to be creative. The camera only needs to provide its user with the necessary tech to make that shot possible. No matter how hard you tried, Foveon sensors always added a 'wow' on top of everything you would get with a Bayer. Hopefully this is no longer true. Whether it is for geeks or photographers, for a lot of people (including me) pixel shift is groundbreaking. :)

So you're saying that the astrotracer is inaccurate and results in blurry pictures? Because pixel shift does not increase image resolution. You do not need higher precision than what you need with single exposure. If single exposure is sharp enough, pixel shift will be even better. After all we are not capturing new pixels, we are capturing the same image multiple times, but with different colors (we sample the same luminance 4 times with 3 different color filters).

Why wouldn't they? Why would the SR reset the sensor's position after each exposure? It can keep moving. As far as I know the sensor can travel for 5 minutes with the stars, so you can have 4x 1 min 15 sec exposure.

K3 vs D750 some sample gallery

Were these shot in RAW? D750 high ISO looks smeared, like it already underwent some cheapo noise reduction.

haha I will have to. K3II + Sigma 18-35 is a bit pricey for a student to buy on the same day. Hopefully I can get the lens later this year, shooting architecture with the Sigma and with pixel shift on must be paradise. Maybe even better, than D810 and Nikon whatever glass.

Thx for the answer(s) :)

Better high ISO is from reduced noise I guess (the sensor is the same). Does that also mean increased dynamic range?
Also is there any info about the 18-55 kit? I have seen only one pic and it looked like it's the DA L version (the one that doesn't have quick-shift). For a flagship I was expecting a... ehmm... flagship kit lens :D

Here's the full conversation:
Original: Flash cannot be used, because it cannot be fired 4 times under 0.5 seconds
My reply: Ricoh could make a slow version, just add a few sec between exposures
Your reply: Why make it slower?

If the K3II can read out full sensor electronically, then why is it only available during pixel shift? No noise, no vibration. Sounds practical in many situations. Or am I missing something?

What I find truly fascinating is Ricoh/Pentax achieved better IQ by improving quality on the pixel level, not by using brute force like Canon with their useless 50MP sensor. RGB pixel stacking improves efficiency instead bringing more firepower. In other words; lens resolution is not a bottleneck, because we achieve superior resolution and color reproduction by putting the 67% of the light to good use that would have been wasted at the color filter otherwise, so by utilizing the SR mechanics we both increase the resolving power of the sensor and lens. Or should I say not decrease (by having a color filter)?

Why I wont buy a K3II (Caution: Subliminal Mind Control Thread)

When I first zoomed in I felt like I didn't zoom in at all. I had to download the image to check if it's really 24MP and I'm really at 100%. These images seem to lack that soft-fuzzy-smeared-pixelated-mess feeling I used to have when blowing images up to 1:1 on my monitor. I need to get a new one I guess. I can't pixel peep with my current monitor anymore. Everything looks just perfect.

Maybe Photoshop will support subpixel stacking. Just skip interpolation and put the R-G-B-G (from the 4 images) together to get the RGB code for each pixel instead. Ricoh's approach is very clean and easy to perform, unlike the mass of Oly.

Pixel (1,1): R = Picture1(1,1) G = (Picture2(1,1)+Picture4(1,1))/2 B = Picture3(1,1)
Pixel (1,2): R = Picture2(1,2) G = (Picture1(1,2)+Picture3(1,2))/2 B = Picture4(1,2)
Pixel (1,3): blah blah blah

Wouldn't take too much time to replace interpolation with stacking.

2 Days? EU – Refund rights when cancelling online orders - Your Europe

Update: I'm not sure about that 'warning', in Hungary you can return goods after buying them.
Update 2: Nevermind, just check your local law about the 14 days refund, makes more sense, than reading EU stuff

I cannot find it, but Kenspo actually hinted something regarding the OVF. GPS units are small, the K3II also has a bigger bump on top. I guess it has all to do with the VF.
