Thematic Brenizer Method photos

I'm way behind on everything photography, but I made this nice 56-shot Brenizer last month of some dang rocks I dug out of the "flower beds" in back of our new house. (The whole lawn needs tons of TLC.) They were a pain in the butt and needed to me memorialized! The pile has grown since then and will still get bigger. It's a work in progress.

We're headed out to First Friday tonight (when all the art galleries open new shows downtown). The weather is beautiful and there's bound to be some fun stuff to see! Since it'll probably end up being a late night, count on me posting my shot(s) tomorrow.

Finally the weekend!!

Hooray! I'm excited that I feel like I'm getting back into a groove with my pictures. 2017 was really rough for us, with lots of changes, and sometimes I'd look at all my camera gear and wonder if it was something that was fading away. This community and the participation here has been powerful for keeping me charged up about it. I love you guys. One good thing about the changes in 2017 was seeking out and securing a better-paying job, which meant upgrading to the K-1 and acquiring new lenses, basically as I like. Now I feel like I'm finally to the point where I can enjoy what I have.

This month's lens, the A 35-105/3.5 was always one I thought would suit me well. Classic Pentax glass with manual focus and a fixed aperture made it really appealing to me. In-hand, the lens is heavy, which is not a deterrent to my tolerance or abilities. The focus ring is decent, smooth, with a funny little jig to dance when you want to wrench it down to "macro" mode. Macro mode was nice to have, but practically seemed to leave something to be desired in regard to rendering - like I was looking through a magnifying glass on the end of my lens. The rotating zoom ring is located between the focus and the aperture ring and I found myself accidentally zooming in or out while manipulating the focus - I think I like the design of push-pull zooms better.

The A-setting was nice to have and I enjoyed setting the camera to TAv, dialing in a shutter speed to spurn camera shake, and forgetting about everything else. Unfortunately, I think I got a little lazy and I'll have to refresh my skills with a fully manual lens in May. I didn't utilize the aperture much to the effect of DoF and basically operated all month with concern to available light, relying heavily on great ISO performance from the K-1. I have a lot of experimentation and learning left to do to fully appreciate this lens' capabilities.

This lens definitely seemed to make it easy to succeed, with a great zoom range, fast-enough aperture, and excellent, true-to-life rendering. Fringing could be found in your likely situations, and there was some barrel distortion at the wide end, but that's part of using a stack of glass to make images - if these are faults, they're just barely. A combination of dragging winter weather and my own malaise causes me to feel like I only got myself energized about making images about halfway through the month, so I definitely owe this lens a revisit soon. But, seeing what it can do, I think it may be a really nice walk-about all 'rounder that might get another run in August or September when we have some road trips planned. I'm looking forward to the future!

I'm already planning on hassling a lot of bugs... June will be a good month to get some use out of the ring flash my husband gave me for Valentine's Day a couple years ago. ;-)

@iheiramo inspired me and I've created a spreadsheet for my lenses/Singling purposes. I'm kind of impressed with myself! Blue cells show Singled on APS-C, orange are FF'ed.

(Yes, I told my husband that I've only spent invested $2,300-some on lenses over the years. Not counting camera bodies. Or other camera systems. Or accessories. Oh my word.) :o

This was the very first camera lens I ever bought. I sold it several years ago and now I'm feeling nostalgic and regretful. I'd like to add it back into my collection. The Promaster version was what I owned, but I understand it was a re-badged Tamron model, and that'd be acceptable, too. It doesn't have to be pretty, only in good working order.

So you can take all your shots in the first few days of the month, then just scan them in one by one?

My feedback, neither right nor wrong:

I suppose I'm a huge snob for digital regardless, but it doesn't seem like this rule is exactly in line with the spirit of Single In. The way I play and understand the game, it isn't just to make 30 images with a lens, but to shoot daily with that lens. I have nearly 10,000 images on Flickr. I could play for years without taking a single shot in that time. I could go around the house this evening and snap up a dozen more images to pick and choose from to post through the end of the month, and there are players who edit their exif data even more dramatically than they PP their photos, but I feel like that's missing the mark...

All that being said, ultimately: I don't care.

This isn't a competition and no one loses if another person "cheats". I think more camaraderie is engendered by struggling through the daily intensity of it together, and the satisfaction of the game is diluted by making a month's worth of shots in one, or a few, big bites. I'm not perfect and I've not been able to post my images daily, but I play catch up and I do shoot every day. In the end, it's the individual playing that decides what level of participation will satisfy them.

I feel like if someone is going to use film for the Single In, they still need to take daily shots. Some cameras can date stamp (even though that's kinda tacky, depending on who you ask), or, keeping notes of what frame was exposed on which day isn't rocket science. Then, play catch up per roll. If you expose three frames a day, you'll burn through a 24-frame roll in 8 days - that's not unreasonable, and I think we've had someone play that way with film in the past. I think it worked out okay...

Haha! This is wonderful. Good work! ^_^

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Traveling to neighboring towns to see new sights sounds ideal, but those seem like special occasion, or weekend plans. I work 5 days a week and don't get home until 6PM. I'm an old lady now and need to be in bed no later than 11, plus there's cooking dinner and tending to the children (furry, four-legged children). I am going to have to be a little ingenious about staying close to home...

I think I will sit down and make a chart, anyway. That sounds pretty fun to me!

Fun news: My selfie made Explore and I'm pleased, not because I think I look great or deserve the celebrity, but because it's PENTAX K-1 front and center. ^_^

I made a promise to myself (and also to my husband, but that's less binding since his interest is extremely limited) to stop half-assing my daily photos. This is a nice lens and I haven't done it justice at all with a month of (mostly) safety shots. Keeping in the game has been one triumph, but I feel like I've fallen out of touch with "seeing" things like I used to and I need to be more mindful of light and shapes and textures... I also need to psyche myself up to get out in the world and do weird stuff to get photos again. Even just walking down Johnson Drive today, mostly abandoned on a Sunday afternoon, I felt pretty self-conscious, and that's not usually me.

I've decided Hudler is enough of a big boy to stay in his kennel all day while we're at work, so walking at lunch time is a good option (if I change out of my heels). Get ready to see a lot of the Plaza!

The perennial question of motivation: Who has some tips to get me revved up again?? I mean, besides the fabulous camaraderie of Single In and the joyous satisfaction of completing a month of daily photos...

Very sorry! I've been there and it's not an easy time. The worry and grief is exhausting. Take care of yourself.

First of all, congrats on the new display! ^_^ As for me, with the anticipation of Flickr being a sort of back-up for me, and because family members occasionally get large prints from my Flickr, I always upload full resolution images without resizing. If they're oversized, Flickr does whatever they do via the viewer to make them display consistently within the site, BUT the downloadable versions are still available in full-size resolutions. (And no, this doesn't inform the issue that I had a few weeks ago regarding my Flickr images not looking as "crisp" as in Lightroom or Photoshop - I tested it!) I've never had a problem with Flickr's site loading slowly for any others' photos and no one's complained that mine are too large, so I think it's a non-issue.

This is a fine plan! Good suggestion. Do it, Sandy!

C'mon! Be a sport!

Anyway, sorry I can't get myself together enough to post during the week. I promise I'll try harder! I have my shots saved up and it's a lovely rainy day for sitting at the computer, so I'm going to go see what I can do to get current. I hope I see lots of happy selfies for my real true birthday that was yesterday! ^_^

I'm still in it to win it, just gearing up for a Lightroom marathon this afternoon. Weather continues to be cold and dreary so all my shots reflect that mundanity. I hope the weather and my inspiration both warm up soon, because the lens' performance is a delight! ;-)

Are you worried at all about SR incorrectly compensating at shorter focal lengths? (I don't know what the science behind this may be...)

Why EV -1? Just in case, to save highlights? (Not a bad idea...)

Manual zoom people: How you got your cameras set?

Being fortunate to have the A setting on the A 35-105/3.5, I'm rocking TAv mode with SR off and the focal length set to some nonsense number (65mm). What are some other methods?

Well, I mean, it would come with all those lenses. Not only do I not have any of those currently, they'd be limited editions. And also pink. Nothing not smart about it... Can we make this real, please? My credit card just told me it's bored out of its mind. ;-)

I still have a few images for this past week to edit and upload, and I've reviewed the M28/2.8 on APS-C before, but... here goes:

This was a bargain-bin copy I got on eBay for $40. It has obviously not been gently kept (and it doesn't help that I smashed it into concrete, along with my K-30, during my last Single In with it), but nonetheless it seems well-functioning, smooth and snappy. On the K-1 it's almost comically small, like a little button nose on a large manly face. Handling is no surprise to any M lens user. Focus throw is not too long nor short, and the MFD is very satisfactory at about 12". The f/2.8 aperture seemed fast enough for me, but I have no qualms about jacking up the ISO - I didn't spend my hard earned cash on the fabulous technology of the K-1 to use it at base ISO all the time. :-) I often used the lens wide open and have been satisfied with the rendering and sharpness. The more photos I took with this lens, the more cavalier I became about landing perfect focus. 28mm is kind of a "standard" wide angle lens -- wide enough to make focusing challenging, but not dramatically wide enough that the field of view becomes a spectacle, like with my 14mm or fish eye. There were only a handful of times that I got the lens out to shoot and wasn't disappointed that it was too wide for the application - I almost always wanted a longer focal length. (Not a fault of the lens, just the circumstances I found myself in.) I used live view a lot. I regret not taking more infinity/landscape images. I think I had a few f/8 or f/11 shots that never made it to EXPORT in Lightroom. I think I'll have to get this lens out again during a warmer month and make sure she's capable. :-)

Being stuck in miserable late winter/early spring weather, and having the normal human stressors, tolerable but nagging depression, and the rigorous demands of working adult life as an excuse, I definitely didn't push the lens as hard as I could have, but I'm proud of myself for participating and shooting every day. I'm glad for this game, and you people. On with the show!

It can't possibly be totally random because if you scroll through any given day of Explore photos on Flickr, there is always a theme or two. The other day it was birds, and particularly owls. There was some other stuff mixed in there, too, but at least 2/3 of the photos were birds, and the majority of the bird photos were owls. Other days it has been spirals, or sunsets/sunrises, waves... The themes aren't completely exclusive to other photography, so it's not like other stuff doesn't have a chance, but it's certainly not hitting randomly.

And, arguably, most of the photos in Explore are very good photos. Average photos tend to get dropped. I know, because it's happened to me/my average photo... but I still add them to my "in Explore" album! :-D

Because you say it's your least liked, AND because I like wide-angle lenses. I don't know how long you've had the K-1 or what you've used on it, but wide-angle lenses on the full frame format are pretty great! Having said that, I am really looking forward to getting away from the 28mm I've been using for all of March... :o
